Trash Fire

  • The fire at an abandoned laundry on the South Side that claimed the lives of two Chicago firefighters was started by someone lighting wood or trash on fire.

    That finding, announced by the Chicago Fire Department on Friday, fits investigators’ working theory that a homeless person trying to stay warm accidentally set the fire Wednesday morning at the rear of the building at 1744 E. 75th St.

We don't know if they should move faster on destroying these buildings so the homeless don't gather there or maybe start culling the homeless so there aren't as many starting fires that might cost fire fighters' their lives.

Truly a sad finding that brings no closure to any First Responders.

Here is a solution for the homeless, let them live in the city council chambers. It would probably raise the intellectual level of the room's occupants by leaps and bounds during council meetings.

Just wondering if that unit the dep't just dispanded "trouble housing unit" dealt with things like this. There are so many abando's that these squaters go into and destroy that they really need people to keep an eye on these buildings and make sure they are properly boarded and such so this kind of stuff doesn't happend.

It seems to me that the building owners should still be held CRIMINALLY responsible for this one. The building was in court since 2007 for crisake! There was a FINAL ruling calling for action to be taken PRIOR TO November 1st. I don't see why there is no talk of charging the owners just like the owners of the E2 Nightclub incident. Is this not possible?

Perhaps if the dregs that started the fire had been the ones killed no one would say too much, but no way should valued public servants be lost in such a deplorable manner without SOMEONE having to be held responsible. The Dai brothers (owners) had 2 to 3 years to correct the problems they were cited for, yet did NOTHING. They claim they couldn't afford to make the necessary repairs? Then they shouldn't be owning a building. Besides, they had enough money to hire attorneys to go to housing court for them all these years and to move their business to another location down the street, why not fix the problems instead?

This incident is inexcusable ! ! !

Widespread Systematic Failures.

The Chicago Tribune has a story that there are at least 16,000 other buildings in the city in the same condition.

Why isn't the building department enforcing the code?

Of course they can try and fine the owners but with the economy in the shape it's in good luck in collecting right?

Even more foreclosures are on the way too.

So why isn't there something done to get the homeless off the streets then?

Oh well we don't want to be handing out more "government cheese" right..so we saved some money...How much is the fireman's life worth?

Yeah, I know, I know. The homeless should get a job and earn their living..heh..who's going to hire them? Who?

You could lock them up but the jails are overcrowded and that's going to cost taxpayer money too.

Better start building the warehouses for these people -- we're going to need them. Our leadership in this country is still cranking out over 500,000 people a month, adding them to the food stamp caseloads -- that's your get-a-job free market off shoring economy that we're not suppose to stand in the way of..

The city probably save money in the building dept.. by letting this go on. They probably save money on section 8 housing and welfare. They saved money on homeless shelters and maybe mental health and save money by not locking the homeless up...

How much were the fireman's lives worth? Was it worth it?

To the goof saying the owners should be liable. What r u a p/i lawyer. You must have never worked where theres alot of abandoned buildings. U can board a building up 20 times and the shitheads will still get in. How is that the owners fault. Even the neighbors said the owners were on top of it. Thing is if they wanna get in they will.

SOLUTION:

1) Once a building enters housing court put a time limit on the proceedings;

2) Attach responsibility in the case, including the owner/corporation, and when court orders are not met or are violated, freeze the assets of the owner or the corporation AND it's CEO, with a warning that the assets of the ENTIRE Board of Directors will be frozen next;

3) Attach some responsibility to the attorney who comes to court and pleads all sorts of BS motions on behalf of the owners. These evil bastards get waaaay too much courtesy when it comes time to assessing blame.

4) Derelict properties judged to be salvageable would be sold at auction with the buyer held to the original court order to make ordered repairs in a timely manner;

5) Derelict properties with no chance of rehabilitation should be demolished with the cost of said demolition to be covered by the frozen assets and/or property liens or resale of the vacant land.

I believe there is an ordinance in the MCC that states all construction and abandon buildings must be secured or under 24 hour guard. This clearly did not occure. Charge the owners with this and continue to look for the person(s) that started the fire and charge them accordingly.

You know a thought just occured to me, if police stations are public buildings and a "warming shelter" shouldn't all public buildings be treated the same? I love the earlier comment about let the homeless stay in the council chambers, but let's be serious, if a police station needs to be open to bums why not city hall? Why are they more deserving of tight security than any other public building?

12/26/2010 10:39:00 AM

I can understand the policy of CFD that an abandoned building has to be cleared in case "someone" is inside, but when will they stop having guys walking on the roofs of these abandoned buildings and chopping holes in the roof. Let these piece of shit structures just burn. Get in, clear it and get out. Then just squirt water on it from a distance. I never understood that technique. Probably some typical B.S. city policy to preserve property owned by political hacks at the risk of the lives of our firefighters.

Most of the homeless are severely mentally ill/substance abusers. Yes, I know that sounds like a good portion of our exempt staff, yet I'm trying to make a point.

In recent years two Chicago Police officers were killed by mentally ill people who took their weapons. It's not just firefighters at risk. It's cops and EVERYONE. Four young people were killed in a Wrigleyville fire a few years back started by a female nutjob.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2008-07-29/news/0807280547_1_mental-health-facility-mentally-ill-woman-wrigleyville

We need to start forcibly medicating the severely mentally ill or opening up the asylums again.

That costs money; although I suspect in the long run it would save money and certainly lives.

Let me get this right, you want to blame the Building Owner? And what about the bum that started the fire? What does he get?

Kind of like blaming the gun manufacturer, and not the idiot pulling the trigger, if you ask me.

There are THOUSANDS of abandoned buildings & homes in Chicago. Foreclosures, evictions… you name it. I understand that the owner has some responsibility to secure his structure, keep it somewhat maintained, but in today’s economy? Think about it, you want to demolish ALL of those buildings / homes?

Who do you blame for the deaths of Flisk? Wortham? Soderberg? Bailey? Is it Hi-Point? Glock? Or the asshole that pulled the trigger?

Just because the one that started the fire is a non-productive shit stain on the fabric of society doesn’t mean that they can’t be blamed!

It's likely that most of these abandoned buildings are not owned by anyone with any assets to go after.

Going after the owners is probably a lost cause although it would be a good idea to take the properties through eminent domain and tear them down and plant grass on the sites. Make them into mini parks. But this is not something that can be done for free.

Reading is a skill.

NOTHING in what I said indicated the fire starter should not be charged. I stand by what I said, that the owners ALSO should be held responsible. Just because you hire a shyster lawyer, does not absolve you of the responsibility of maintaining the property SINCE 2007!!!

I don't have one iota of sympathy for the owners!

There wouldn't be any abandoned commercial buildings if Daley Inc didn't tax the ever-loving shit out of the businesses throughout the city, forcing them to retreat to the suburbs or out of state for the past 30-40 years. There wouldn't be any vacant residential buildings if there were people working in those small & mid sized businesses that weren't forced to pay head taxes and high income taxes. If there were people working in those factories, they'd be housed, paying taxes and supporting their neighborhoods. Instead we have crime ridden Daley Slums sprouting up. Santuaries for nuts, derelicts, perverts, illegal aliens, and thugs.
How much does this city pay out to the homeless outreach centers who refuse to help? Which Daley friends sit on those boards? In 25 years of Daley Inc., has anything improved, besides the increased funding, with the skyrocketing homeless population?
Lives destroyed by the hard work of the Democratic Party of Chicago and the State of Illinois.
The pissbum contingency, dead or alive, unknowingly still votes democratic from those abandoned buildings, the slums of Chicago are what keeps this city & state Democratic. Ain't that so, Gov'na ?
Was it ever disclosed what exactly was destroyed in the fire at the County building storage room a few years ago?
Rubbish. This whole city stinks of it.

Obviously written by someone who never has been inside a burning building.....smoke builds up in a building to the point that it nearly reaches the floor....it isn't just saunter in, look around and leave, jagoff

By the way, smoke is FUEL for a fire.....when they chop holes in the roof it lifts the smoke level inside AND removes the fuel for the fire.....
