Four Police Shot in Detroit

  • It was just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday when the gunman came into the police station and started shooting.

A female sergeant in a hallway was hit first. Commander Brian Davis raced out of his office, exchanged fire with the gunman and got shot in the back.

Then the gunman rushed the horseshoe-shaped front desk with his pistol grip shotgun. Sgt. Ray Saati and Officer David Anderson also were shot before the gunman was killed.

It should certainly give anyone working our desks pause - there isn't a district station in Chicago that isn't wide open, exposed, vulnerable. The older stations are built with low counters and the new ones, while having raised desk areas, are surrounded by open space and glass. Prime targets for certain motivated individuals without a doubt. Stay alert boys and girls.

I was a desk guy at the end of my career. You could have nightmares thinking about how easily this can happen virtually anywhere in this country. The ADMINISTRATIVE building or district station just is not a place where you would anticipate an armed assault.

That said, however, the desk is an absolute magnet for every goof, nutjob, moron, upset family member of arrestees and every other assorted menace to society that can be imagined!

Praying for a speedy and complete recovery for our brothers in blue from Detroit.

It's not a question as to whether it would ever happen in any of our districts but rather a matter of time before it happens. Our own level of security within our parking lots and stations suck. The city aldercreatures and prick daley dont give a shit about our safety, this is/has become a joke of a department/ mickey mouse club of an organization and we'll never see the type of security level to protect ourselves within our own districts.... remember the kid who impersonated the police and checked out a radio, one of our own who was shot dead last year in a parking lot, oh yeah and wasn't there someone who actually walked into the 23rd district years back with a gun.... Just saying, but remember ! it's just a matter of time... God help us !!!

Time for Obama to create a crime bill and address the continued rise of crime/attacks on police officers across the US. How the fuck is it that cities are cutting down on law enforcement officers across the country yet the attacks on police are still rising? These politicians need to stop getting rich off the people and start doing their jobs.

Still, Penny will force officers to sit in her pet project, POD room, which is completely vulnerable to attack. A safety complaint was filed by the FOP after she removed the door to that room. MLAS concurred that it was indeed a safety issue. Her answer? She had the door cut in half and reinstalled, as if only dwarves are intent on attacking the police. The kicker is, that door is a fire door. Now the station is violating building and fire codes because she wants to watch everything the officers are doing in that room.

Now the big question is, what is the Department going to do about security in our WIDE OPEN districts? Suggestion, turn them back to a place of business, not a flop house.
I got a bad feeling about this, its gonna happen here, copycat style, and the offender is going to come out of a pod room. Lord, let me be very wrong on this. If nothing is done to secure our stations and our blood is shed again, the stain is forever on the hands of those who don't make the changes. O.K. Supt. Weis, what are you gonna do?
The clock is ticking, EARN some respect and do what's right.

The desk crew at a station I'm familiar with many times is:
1 armed desk officer,
1 armed Desk Sgt or acting Sgt.
1 armed Watch Commander
1 unamred Lockup Keeper
1 unarmed Detention Aide.

That's it. The security doors in this newer style building are failing (don't close) one after the other, the camera system and door buzzers are malfunctioning. I won't say where this is, but it is a terrible security issue.

I was told by an old timer some 16 years ago that it was not that unusual for some of the stations in bad neighborhoods to be attacked by the locals if you had one of them in custody. Try fighting off 100 angry goofs from the hood if they're intent on taking the building over. We're lucky that this hasn't happened here and we better get our shit together before it does.

We've been warned, now lets do something proactive for a change.

Why do we have to suffer looking and smelling at these low life fucks while they "crashed" in our station? I've seen a couple of stations that has bullet proof glass at the front desk. Why can't EVERY District stations install them? I wouldn't be suprised if all Desk Officers WEAR their soft body armor. For your own safety, please do it..

Imagine serving more than 30 years, being in your late fifties or early sixties and being told you will have to make do on $25000 to $30000?

Thanks to all these experienced and on the ball coppers, nobody but the bad guy was hurt! Bottom line, pay attention and dont be afraid to take action, trouble can happen anywhere!!

Going to be a little long but worth it. Scary incident:

I was with an arrestee at the hospital last spring. He had a warrant out of Will County for traffic. Said they were giving him 90 days. Asked him how his license got so messed up. He said it all started about 5 years in the 003 District. He was driving with a buddy and they were both drunk. Said he got hit in the intersection by a PO who ran the stop sign. Said he knew the POs knew they were wrong because they got out all freaked out. Sgt came made sure the bad guys didn't need an ambulance. Said they were fine but didn't have a license. Sgt told them drive to the station. Here's the kicker...he felt the POs knew they were wrong because neither of them got patted down, and paid no mind to them possibly being dunk at 3 am. He said him and his buddy each had a pistol and 50 bags of crack. They drive to 003 and he opens the door. Buddy says ain't you gonna put that up? He says I don't wanna make no false moves. They both go inside each with a gun, 50 bags of crack, drunk as hell, get tickets, and go on their merry way.

Judy Weis is not going to do anything about these stations. He can't. He has to get the OK from the 5th floor and we all know that the little man is not going allow proper station house security. Proper station house security is in conflict with the Democraptic idea of station houses being open for all the public. Hell, I remember when Charlie Williams told the boys in 025 that the newsmedia would and should be granted unfettered access to anywhere in 025 they wanted to go. They dumped a Captain because of it, a good and well respected Captain, kind and gentler Captain. And how many stations have the swipe machine BEHIND the desk in what should be a secure area? How many city workers from other departments enter into what SHOULD be secured areas to swipe in and out? Would it be possible for a terrorist or criminal to enter those areas posing as city employees and then shoot the place up?

OT: THE BELOW STORIES ARE ALL RELATED IN THAT THE POLICE WERE AMBUSHED AND SHOT. POLICE ARE COMPLETELY REACTIVE IN THEIR JOB AND THE PUBLIC TAKES COMPLETE OFFENSE WHEN AN OFFICER IS PRO-ACTIVE IN HIS JOB.

2 officers killed, third wounded while seeking suspect at Florida home.

Two St. Petersburg, Florida, officers were fatally shot Monday while trying to find a suspect on an aggravated battery warrant, Police Chief Chuck Harmon said.

A third officer, a deputy U.S. Marshal, was shot twice and wounded but was in stable condition, officials said.

Authorities have been trying to locate the suspect for weeks, Harmon said, using both uniformed and undercover officers. The officers went to the home about 7 a.m. Monday to talk to a "young lady" regarding his whereabouts, but did not expect him to be there, the chief said.

The woman told the officers the man was in the home's attic, Harmon said.

The officers went after the man, who fired at them from the attic, he said. One of the officers remained in the attic after being shot. An entry team went in to rescue him without incident.

Harmon said his goal was to get the suspect out of the house without further injuries. Nothing has been heard from the suspect after the last exchange of gunfire with police, he said, but in earlier communication with police he refused to give himself up.

In total, Harmon estimated, more than 100 shots were fired from both the suspect and the officers
The three law enforcement officers are among at least 10 shot in the last 24 hours nationwide. Four officers were shot and wounded at a Detroit police precinct on Sunday.

In another shooting in Washington State Three Kitsap County sheriff's deputies responded to the Walmart store Sunday after getting a call about a suspicious person "from a bystander who had concerns about a person inside the store," Wilson said. Officers responded about 3 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office said.

The deputies approached one man outside the store's south entrance, but the man ran from the scene.

"(The deputies) called to him and said, 'Hey, we need to talk to you,'" Wilson said. "He turned around and shot at them."

The Monday statement said, "For reasons not yet known, the suspect turned and fired multiple shots at the two pursuing deputies with a semi-automatic handgun. Both deputies were struck by the suspect's bullets and unable to return gunfire."

However, a third sheriff's deputy approached from behind the store, rounded the corner and shot the suspect, the statement said.

The man was shot and later pronounced dead in the Walmart parking lot

I also wear a taser. Most the time desk crews are Face Booking, browsing the internet or with their back turned to the door talking. Its a job for those who want an easy day or an earlier time to get off, but you shouldnt let your guard down. I only worked the desk as a Sgt half a dozen times (never by my choice). Maybe twice as a PO. I am a street cop. The Department never considered Officer safety with the design of these new stations. I dont see them spending any additional money now putting up any protective barriers. Be safe and look out for each other. No one else will.....

Heck, when I was in the military in Germany (military police) our desk was up high and we had a mirror on the far wall so we could see behind anyone who approached. The desk sergeant had a .45 cal pistol mounted under the desk. Even the military had it right back then. WTF is wrong with CPD? I'm opposed to the idea of police stations being a 'welcoming' place. They should not be that, no more than a foreign military base should be 'welcoming' to any native who happens to wander by... They should be efficient and secure- not a goddamn circus.

A light duty officer (or even a lower cost private security guard) and an inexpensive sterilization point- like you encounter in courthouses- should be present in every police station. You're talking maybe $5K in materials to set up and ZERO added cost to staff if you use light duty officers- to significantly diminish (if not eliminate) the effectiveness of attacks on police officers in stations.

Police fear 'war on cops'

At least 11 shot in 24 hours; death toll apace with 2010 uptick

[...]

Across the nation, this was the situation Monday:

In Indiana, Indianapolis police say they arrested Thomas Hardy in the shooting of officer David Moore, who was shot in the face and body and remained in a coma.

A manhunt continued in the Oregon beach town of Waldport for a gunman who shot officer Steven Dodds, 45, a six-year veteran of the Lincoln City Police Department. Police were looking for the owner of a 1984 Dodge truck that fled the shooting scene.

In Detroit, four officers shot inside their precinct were recovering, police said. Investigators said Lamar Moore, 38, of Detroit entered the 6th Precinct on the city's northwest side about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and shot Cmdr. Brian Davis, who's in charge of the precinct; Officer David Anderson; Sgt. Ray Saati; and Sgt. Carrie Schulz. Officers returned fire and killed Moore, they said.

Two deputies wounded in Port Orchard, Wash., were in satisfactory condition after a gunfight killed a suspect and a woman who came running to his aid. Police were investigating how the woman was shot.

In St. Petersburg, Fla., a suspected gunman was found dead after two St. Petersburg police officers were shot to death and a U.S. marshal was injured as they tried to make an arrest. Suncoast Benevolent Association President Mark Marland confirmed the fallen officers as Tom Baitinger and Jeffrey Yaslowitz.

In Miami, thousands of law enforcement officers gathered at a funeral service in American Airlines Arena to honor Roger Castillo, 41, Amanda Haworth, 44, who were killed on Thursday while serving a warrant on a suspected killer. The suspect, 22-year-old Johnny Simms, was killed by another officer.

Why the Desk Sgt in every district in the city doesn't have a fully rigged out M4 within in arms reach is anybodys guess. That goes for the desk dollies in the D-Unit

1/24/2011 12:07:00 AM

The prioritiy in Chicago is not the safety of officers but catering to the homeless and reverends. Our district stations are wide open for anyone. But the fifth floor at 35th street is secrued. The important people are taken care of. Now move along.

Funny how HQ has multiple PO 's working desk, metal detectors, fenced in parking lot with a guard. District station has unsecured lots, unsecured doors, 1 PO working desk, 1 in radio room. Start filing those safety grievences! This department is run by clueless clowns. O yea j fed take a look at the FBI building.

What happen to the secret service reports on securing stations? I know they ain't that dumb too!

1/24/2011 08:10:00 AM

The important people work on the fifth floor and are safe and secured. What did ever happen to that secret service report? Maybe the report is in the same place as the morale survey? HMMMM

The criminal element is getting more and more bold in this country, and I think a lot of it has to do with reduced manpower in the face of municipal financial woes, and a judicial and political system that doesn't fully support/understand LE.

11 cops shot in the past 24 hours across the US. It's getting crazy out there. Stay safe guys.

We should be taking ourconcerns to the store front rev.'s who are the one's who actually run the department. What a shame that this is what has become of our police department. Spineless and incompetant bosses who look to the the outside for guidence and direction. The troops are burdened and no one within the department cares.

This open desk area in CPD districts is going to get someone hurt.
......
In my small town of 5,000 just over the border, the desk is behind glass and if you want to even enter the station between 7pm and 7am you have to be buzzed inside.

Horror in Moscow --

Clips from "RT," Russian TV news --

Someone detonated a large suitcase bomb packed with nails, screws, etc. in the Moscow airport. (Scene -- just like O' Hare, with signs in Russian.) Report said "50 injured, 35 critical."

Chechen rebels are probably to blame; they took credit for a Moscow subway bombing last year, and have attacked schools (Beslan, if I'm not mistaken), etc.

"But let's abolish death penalty in U.S., state by state, so there is no deterrent. Now that makes perfect sense in bizarro country we have become."

--1/24/2011 07:43:00 AM

Yeah, passing another "crime bill," as someone here mentioned, won't help a basically sick society. The United States is overcrowded, underemployed, and in the middle of a depression. The motherf___ers know this, and are DELIBERATELY shaking the bottle as hard as they can with their thumb over the end. The more crime, the more "crime bills," the more pressure, the less livable life becomes.

Cameras everywhere -- watched by the homeless.

...and you wonder why psychiatric drugs are being advertised on TV like snack foods...

Goldman Sachs and Bill Daley's J.P. Morgan/Chase and all the other vicious speculators and manipulators "don't care whether it's going up or down as long as it's going."

We are all just ants in George Soros' global ant farm.

What to do, what to do...

Al Jazeera reporting now that toll of Moscow airport suicide bombing is 35 dead and over 100 injured. They had cell-phone video taken inside after the blast; whole place full of thick gray explosive smoke, ceiling tiles hanging down, most lighting blown out, and bodies everywhere.

"I'm opposed to the idea of police stations being a 'welcoming' place. They should not be that, no more than a foreign military base should be 'welcoming' to any native who happens to wander by..."

--1/24/2011 03:26:00 PM

Unfortunately, the view of a police station being a "foreign military base" -- and the police therefore an unwelcome foreign army of occupation -- is becoming more and more understandable in an unnatural, mandated "multicultural" society, in which widely disparate and incompatible peoples are pushed together and held there within a ring of government bayonets while more and more are forced in on top of them every day, all allegedly to maintain an ideal that has never existed anywhere.

Any fool can tell you that everyone is not the same -- that people have greatly differing abilities, perceptions, and likes and dislikes - and that everyone does not get along.

As the frontiersman said, "I liked my fellow man the best when he was scattered some."

To pretend otherwise is vastly disrespectful and unfair to all-- sheer destructiveness, which often seems to be conducted for mere sport, just to give the Eleanor Roosevelts among us a warm, self-righteous glow -- all purchased with an incalculable bill of money, lost time, wasted opportunity, and shed blood.

At this rate, half of the population will soon be employed as "low-cost security guards" at "sterilization points," searching, surveilling, and imprisoning the other half as society continues to fragment and life becomes more unlivable.

This could at the very least be described as "counterproductive" -- a fearful "vicious cycle" in which attacks on the police and defensive police responses serve to build a higher and higher wall of suspicion and distrust between us all.

It does indeed seem as though we are witnessing orchestrated global insanity, led by a Satanic conductor with a flaming baton. The Moscow airport today -- lights blown out, gray, choking explosive smoke filling the place, the dead from a powerful suicide bomb scattered everywhere.

Slipping in the blood one can't see, deafened by the blast, making their way toward the light in shock with their shredded clothes and broken glasses and missing shoes -- the lucky ones.

Police! Help!

Ah, but even the ugly old leftist paraphrasis of the police motto, the canard of "We Protect The Owners and Secure Their Property," cannot be made to apply in a topsy-turvy world in thich the Gap chain of stores, afloat on some weird feelgood altruistic policy, refuses to allow its employees to file theft reports! The Gap DOES NOT WANT TO BE SAVED. Is it any wonder that people in "flash mobs" have begun to crowd in and help themselves?

Thanks once more to SCC for providing such a unique forum, and thanks especially to all the posters, ladies and gentlemen all, who take the time to set their ideas forth here in what is always a deeply thought-provoking discussion. Sometimes too much so, as we little people struggle to grasp the vast issues.

Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, pray for us.

Be good to yourself.

Keep an open mind.

Check six.

Stay safe.

WRT: "These politicians need to stop getting rich off the people and start doing their jobs."

============

Good point!

Now has any of the mayoral candidates been asked if they are running to enhance their own personal political positions or for the welfare of the people of this city?

Seriously, these career politicians -- it's time for them to be voted out.

Maybe the new mayor will get the guardian angles posted at the front door. They don't cost anything right?

Oh wait..I know..Here's what we do.

We make all the visitors sign-in before they can enter the building.

Then we'll have a name and address to run in that Chicago gun database shortshanks built.

If we get a hit, we can send a car over to that address and see if the gun is still in the house... and if it is, then we know it's okay to let the person in!

Of course we would have to do one final check with the P.A.G to see if the crystal balls show us anything too. But that should work

I'm not that guy, but back when I lived in a rural area and could shoot whenever I wanted (and competed in IDPA), I used to shoot about 500-800 rounds a week. Of course, ammo and reloading components were a good bit cheaper then than they are now, but I had a Glock 17 that probably had 200K through it and the only thing I ever had to do was replace an $8 guide rod @ about 120K.

Believe it or not, there are some people who shoot- a lot- and equally mystifying is how skilled they are at handling a sidearm, compared the guy who only shoots when he's forced to requalify.
