Eating in Chicago

The author of "The Beat Cop's Guide to Chicago Eats" is the featured guest on tonight's Sunday Night Radio Special. The show is on WGN at 9 PM and will be discussing the book for the entire hour.

At the very least, perhaps it could help settle the most important decision many of us make on a nightly basis.

Hands down, the absolute BEST was La Milanese at 32nd and may ( I think). The father passed on and the joint closed. No where else even comes close to this treasure.

Currently, Punky's at 26th/Wallace beats Ricobene's at every possible level except for parking and seating area! Punky's breaded steak is a 1/4" work of art that puts Rico's to shame in every way!

Anyone who can pass on a better sandwich than Punky's, please do!

The co-author of the book is Christopher Garlington, who wrote about that story. It was my first interview, and I was pretty nervous. They had given me several things we were going to talk about, and that was not on the list. We actually finished the book over six months ago, but because of the economy, it didn't get published until now.

You're right though, the family style breakfast on Sundays was the best in city. $2 bucks for coppers and a buck a man tip you were full for the day.

Very funny.

Alinea and Charlie Trotter's are both four star restaurants in the Michelin guide. As long as you can afford $400 a couple, not counting wine, tax and tip, I'd have to agree.

Besides, you need to make reservations 2-3 months in advance.

suppose the doughnuts are inevitable, a permanent characterization that no policeman, anywhere, will ever be able to avoid

-----------------------------------

History Lesson.
It was never doughnuts, it was coffee that started this continuing characterization. Prior to the advent of the donut franchises in the 70's, the first mission after roll call was a cup of coffee. The caffeine addicts had their favorite stops that usually provided a complimentary cup of Joe. Naturally, the quality varied. When the Dunkins, Winchells, et cetera started, they thought it would be in their best interests to have a frequent police presence in their 24 hour operations. Free coffee became the inducement. Some provided comp donuts. Police protocol at the time dictated that if it were free it was for me. Cops started hanging around donut shops. This practice was immortalized in song with the riff about "all the cops in the donut shop say" whatever. It all started with free coffee. No one hung around bakeries before the free coffee.

To the Einsteins who talk about Deep Dish being too 'doughy' - are you basing this on Pizza Hut "Chicago Style Deep Dish" pizza?

Authentic Chicago pan pizzas employ a regular amount of dough (some places use a slightly thicker crust) but a ton of extra CHEEEEEESE! A properly executed Chicago Style deep dish uses pounds and pounds of cheese...

Best pizzas in the city are all on the Southside.

Nick and Vitos, Pudgys, etc- places that still use the original recipes from the 40's and 50's that earned Chicago Pizza its reputation but ironically enough, is next to impossible to find anymore in an unadulterated form.

Didnt see the Bob Sirott interview, but a month so ago saw the author interviewed on another show and the same thing happened. When questioned about a restaurant in his book, he had no idea about the restaurant. Could give no facts

No, sorry your wrong. I've only done two television interviews, one with Bob Sirott and one on channel 26, and I didn't mess up on the channel 26 one. you could listen to me and Chris do our internet radio show on Friday's at 6:00 p.m. at www.chicagotalkradio.net

are you serious??? Ive been to numerous steak houses in chicago and throughout the country and The chicago chop house could be in the bottom 5 of all places I have been. The resturant is cold and dingey and the steak was aweful...not even ok, it was terrible. Thought maybe it was just me but I was eating with three other people and everyone else had a bad steak. Not one of our steaks was done even close to how we ordered it and they were luke warm at best. The meat was barely even cooked... aweful aweful steak and way over priced. how this place is in buisness is beyond me.

I'm from the North Side so here it goes: aside from the mom and pop places in Pilsen, good mexican comida can be had at Clark/Gregory in another mom/pop place. Good to the Police too, not a lot of yuppies in their either.

To the guy who extols Golden Nugget, you really need to expand your horizons. Even the IHOPs are better. Mitchell's has a great skillet as does the Original Pancake House down by the Park West.

North side thin Pizza--Martino's at Bernard/Peterson (police family owned) I went to Nick's on Pulaski after seeing it on DDD, it was worth the drive to Sox-Land, that fried egg pizza was great. For thick 'za, you can't beat Malnati's--there's a reason they've been around. Leona's is overrated as is Giordano's.

Enough said about Pompeii and their locations, great food!! I'm gonna try the suggestions about the breaded steak---Ricobene's has been riding on their rep way too long and it is getting overpriced for what you get.

Wolfies is good for a hot dog, esp since Fluky's went bye-bye. A hidden gem is Quick Bite at 5159 N Western, try the marinated grilled chicken sandwich.

For steaks, try Gibsons, Gene and Georgetti (Frank Sinatra used to send his Lear jet to Midway to pick up food to bring back from G&G) and Ruth's Chris.

Can't beat the Prime Rib dinner at Lawry's.

I don't like Chinese food, but the yuppies flock to the places around Argyle and B'way to get Viet and Chinese food. They get their cars broken into a lot--they'll never learn about leaving their GPS units on the dash.

Yeah blah blah fucking blah... Ask this question 100 times about any area and every time you'll have a few people pop up to say exactly what you said about anywhere.

THAT PLACE HAS THE WORST PIZZA I'VE EVER HAD!!!

Stay away from Wiseguys Pizza,

One of the best places in the city used to be Sarah's. it was a garage at 26th and wallace, Sarah was an old Italian lady who owned the place, her son used to work there and pass out pizza for free while you sat at the big counter. this is going back to the late 60s and early 70s.

Who knows -- Borders is in the middle of a bankruptcy sale -- right down to the store fixtures, everything needed by other failing stores -- and I just heard tonight that the Barnes and Noble chain is also up for sale.

The Beat Cop's Guide to Chicago Eats is available at most Barnes & Nobles, Borders that are still open, Amazon, and apparently some douche is selling some on eBay.

As for Dave not knowing his own book: are you kidding me? He was nervous as hell going on TV for the first time—with Bob Sirott no less.

Uncle John's is the best Bar-B-Que in the city hands down.

You're right about deep dish: it's not about the dough and if you've been eating a doughy deep dish, it just means they dropped a calzone and sold it to you. If you want some monstrously fantastic pizza, get your ass over to the Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Co.

Trotters? Seriously? 200 bucks for oyster foam? I tell you what, I'll feed y dog some oysters, wait an hour, and get you some quality foam. $20 bucks. No problem.
