Glad all officers are safe. That being said:

It was amusing to hear the white shirts beat their chests on air.

"If any off-duty officers are on scene, send them away."

Nice to know you aren't really the police 24/7, eh?

And the douche who stated (HBT/SWAT Commander?) that HIS people had the scene and basically "thankyouverymuchwegotitfromherekthxbye"

Sadly ended up being a large waste of time, seeing as how the bad guys got away in all the chaos.

Still hoping the shitheads end up shot at a hospital somewhere. Good job 004 OFFICERS...

The community area is named for Adolph Hegewisch, the president of U.S. Rolling Stock Company who hoped to establish “an ideal workingman's community” when he laid out the town along a rail line in 1883, six years before Chicago annexed the town.

This is the problem with the lame ass State of Illinois. Or more specifically, its Legislature. No Concealed Carry means that once these armed robbery crews walk in and pull guns, no one can do shit except the Police or the rare citizen that packs a concealed gun in spite of the law.And then when the Police show up, shithead panics and its HBT time. When will namby pamby Illinois and its candy ass politicians wake up and follow the lead of the 40 plus other States that allow decent people to carry ? Even in ultra liberal California, half of the Countys issue concealed carry permits . The Sheriff is in charge of this and it is a factor in his re-election ! Will it take another Lane Bryant incident for Illinois to wake up ?

Upshot-- "the robbers were able to escape. No one was injured, police said.

"About 8:30 p.m. police responded to a robbery at a Family Dollar store in the 13300 block of South Brainard Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. Shots were fired at police and police returned fire, he said.

"Police surrounded the building, but about three hours later determined the robbers had fled, Alfaro said. It was not clear how.

"He did not immediately know how many suspects were involved in the incident."

DNA works back the other way, too --

Prison inmate charged in Chicago cold-case murder

By Jason Meisner

Tribune reporter

2:15 p.m. CST, February 8, 2011

"A 59-year-old man already serving life in prison was ordered held without bond today in the 1983 rape and murder of an elderly bookstore owner in Chicago after cold-case detectives matched DNA to him, Cook County prosecutors said.

"Joseph Walker was given the life sentence in Utah for a sexual assault, prosecutors said.

"Authorities said Walker denied murdering Frieda Fenster, 77, [who was]discovered beaten, strangled and raped in the family’s century-old shop, Stein’s Books and Novelty Store, at 526 S. State St., a few days before Christmas in 1983."

I remember Stein's -- a bit of old Chicago, down the strip of south State with the burlesques and junk stores and everything else a real city used to have. I may have a book somewhere with their sticker in it...

Interesting that Borders and Barnes and Noble sited their big stores right in concentrations of small independent bookstores like this and drove a lot of them out of business -- and now Borders is going bankrupt itself...

1983...good work, detectives. At least the family may get a little peace finally, knowing that the killer is locked away.

If you think that our current pension will remain solvent if nothing is changed you are smoking something. Our pension needs to be adjusted so that we will have one wehn we retire. We fell asleep at the wheel by not getiing involved sooner. Now we have to do damage control. If i have to contribute more to ensure I will have a pension so be it. It sucks but its a fact of life.

Are you serious, I really hope that you have no family that really cares about you! You are willing to immediately run after offenders who have just shot at the police and has no hostages. You are not brave but stupid, with that mentality your family will have to bury you or you will pay tons of money from the civil lawsuit. I know, you know it all, swat and the officers who were first on scene are stupid. I bet you never even tried out for swat! The offenders get out the back before the district locked down all exits, could happen to anybody. They did a good job, there was no reason to rush in and try to be a hero for nothing! The people who are stupid are you and the long haired, bearded plain clothes copper who broke the perimeter with his rifle just as swat was gonna make there entry! What did he think, they were gonna ask for his help! After he was told he was in the hot zone ( in the line of fire w/o cover) he refused to leave and set up along the fence line with his rifle and had to be given a direct order by swat commander to stand down. This cops stupidity delayed swats entry even longer. Common get a clue

Don't be so quick to shoot an arrow into Hegewisch. Been out here 40yrs. Lots of young coppers and fireman still here and still coming. Cheap property taxes, cheap gas and food prices are just across the border. If this jagoff commander would just keep 433 on the beat and not up on 79th st., the little wannabe bangers that are around would be taken care of. As far as Section 8, blame the exiting little guy on the 5th floor. By tearing down the jets all at once, he's infected most of the remaining decent communities and burbs. If you think Beverly, Mt. Greasewood, and Garcia Ridge are any better, knock yourself out. Try driving up and down Western Ave. on the south end and check out all the characters just hangin' and lookin'

Or how about disband all those useless units and train and equip patrol for things like this. You know, the one's that actually get there first before all the special people. What happens when something like this happens during the day when all the super cops are home sleeping? Should we just send in patrol for the slaughter because of NO equipment/training for situations like these? And no, I'm not a tru/msf(same damn thing) hater because they won't take me, I'm the guy who works my schedule because of family issues.

Whoever the next aldercreature is from the 10th needs to go Vrdolyak style and get a couple- yes, two OR MORE- beat cars assigned to police nothing but 127th to 136th, east of Brainerd and West of the trailer court.

That neighborhood has always suffered from unfortunate proximity issues- mostly good people in Hegewisch, but surrounded by turds who soak all the police service.

Hegewisch is something the politicians can reference in terms of a far southside neighborhood that is relatively safe, yet they're letting it deteriorate.
