Heads up for possible communications problems -- there have been a couple of Chicago TV stations off-air/intermittent tonight, my computer's been acting up a bit, and I heard some long-distance "skip" on at least one of the zones tonight.

Huge solar flare jams radio, satellite signals: NASA

– Thu Feb 17, 7:45 am ET
"WASHINGTON (AFP) – A powerful solar eruption that triggered a huge geomagnetic storm has disturbed radio communications and could disrupt electrical power grids, radio and satellite communication in the next days, NASA said.

"A strong wave of charged plasma particles emanating from the Jupiter-sized sun spot, the most powerful seen in four years, has already disrupted radio communication in southern China.

"The Class X flash -- the largest such category -- erupted at 0156 GMT Tuesday, according to the US space agency.

"X-class flares are the most powerful of all solar events that can trigger radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms," disturbing telecommunications and electric grids, NASA said Wednesday.

"Geomagnetic storms usually last 24 to 48 hours -- but some could last for many days, read a statement from the US National Weather Service.

"Ground to air, ship to shore, short-wave broadcast and amateur radio are vulnerable to disruption during geomagnetic storms. Navigation systems like GPS can also be adversely affected."

Space weather could wreak havoc in gadget-driven world

Kerry Sheridan – Sun Feb 20, 10:25 am ET
"WASHINGTON (AFP) – A geomagnetic space storm sparked by a solar eruption like the one that flared toward Earth Tuesday is bound to strike again and could wreak havoc across the gadget-happy modern world, experts say.

"Contemporary society is increasingly vulnerable to space weather because of our dependence on satellite systems for synchronizing computers, airline navigation, telecommunications networks and other electronic devices.

"A potent solar storm could disrupt these technologies, scorch satellites, crash stock markets and cause power outages that last weeks or months, experts said Saturday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting.

"The situation will only get more dire because the solar cycle is heading into a period of more intense activity in the coming 11 years.

"This is not a matter of if, it is simply a matter of when and how big," said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration administrator Jane Lubchenco.

"The last time we had a maximum in the solar cycle, about 10 years ago, the world was a very different place. Cell phones are now ubiquitous; they were certainly around (before) but we didn't rely on them for so many different things," she said.

"The experts admitted that currently, little that can be done to predict such a storm, much less shield the world's electrical grid by doing anything other shutting off power to some of the vulnerable areas until the danger passes...."

Planet Could Be 'Unrecognizable' By 2050, Experts Say

Sun Feb 20, 3:05 pm ET
"WASHINGTON (AFP) – A growing, more affluent population competing for ever scarcer resources could make for an "unrecognizable" world by 2050, researchers warned at a major US science conference Sunday.

"The United Nations has predicted the global population will reach seven billion this year, and climb to nine billion by 2050, "with almost all of the growth occurring in poor countries, particularly Africa and South Asia"

To feed all those mouths, "we will need to produce as much food in the next 40 years as we have in the last 8,000." said Jason Clay of the World Wildlife Fund at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

"By 2050 we will not have a planet left that is recognizable" if current trends continue, Clay said.

Of course if you are a Rham supporter, feel free to stay home. The Trib says he is going to win without your vote.

The blizzard really brought this to my attention. Just wondering if I can take matters into my own hands off duty with some parking ticket enforcement in front of my house? This is getting out of control where my family cannot even park in front of our house due to illegal cars sitting there. I've tried everything first, 311, request tows, called 911 (feel bad- 008 coppers too busy for this petty nonsense). I don't want any smart a55 answers, just wondering if others have done it and did you get a hard time about it? thanks.

You can do it, but you better be right and not harrassing someone. If the cars are illegal (I don't know what >you< call illegal), no problem. If it's some pimpy 'been parked here a couple days without moving it', you'll find yourself with a problem.

There was a time, when I was in a unit, that I signed out a book at the district, so I could write hydrant parkers in front of my parents' house. It was a pain for the busy district guys to constantly come out, so they were happy. And I solved the problem pretty quick, because nobody wanted that hundred dollar ticket a second time, so they stopped blocking the hydrant within a couple of weeks.

One caveat: sorry, but nobody has a 'right' to park directly in front of their house. If that's your only motivation, you'll need to adjust.

How about the 23rd ward where they have one of zalewski's precinct captains on video stealing anna goral signs(check out youtube/23rd ward theft). Of course zalewski knows nothing about this but one of his high priced attorneys happens to show up in court and demands a continuence until the 26th of february, you know, AFTER the election. Not a peep out of the media who were informed of the arrest yet it was top story news for days when paraica did it. I guess if it's against any of the daley/rahm supporters it gets buried like it never happened

Speaking of manpower! Can anyone tell me why the area 3 deputy chief still has 4 P.O.'s assigned to his office even though that order came out to have only two officers. Remember that order was released at least a month ago. I guess Deputy Rottner can have anything he wants. The two year wonder officer C.A. who was on days in 023 is still there along with 3 other P.O.'s. Clean them out and that is two more officers hitting the street!

2/20/2011 11:40:00 AM

The same shit goes on in Area 4. There is a P.O. from 012 that reports to work everyday at the A/4 D.C.'s office but she is on the A & A's in 012. She was detailed to the D.C.'s office before manpower cuts. It's all just a paper shuffle. I'm sure there are more.

03:40, the Gold Braid bill was pushed by the city (Jane Byrne)as a quid pro quo benefitting the heavy, at the time the retirement age was dropped from 55 to 50 in 1982. Prior to that, exempts retired with their career service pension. They wore suits, worked a 3 hour day, made more connections, and got a car....those were the bones. Actually, they were not as obnoxious as the current breed of exempt who likes to wear BDUs and combat boots on faux-crime fighting nights. You never saw the old guys and they never fucked with you unless you crossed their paths. Most exempts were Captains back in the day and got a Captains pension.

This is a huge burden to the fund, especially with the explosion of bullshit Goldstar spots under the last two Supes....but like most other things, Daley is most to blame. They could have created NONE of these Goldstar spots without his OK.

I have done it to date without any problems. The way i see it, you are still the police tho you are not in uniform. Tho you may want to choose your off duty battles wisely. There is no harm in writing a vehicle for being illegally parked, but be prepared for retribution if the person gets pissed seeing you issue that ticket.

OMG my neighbors love to invite their friends and family over and inevitably they end up parking their hoopties in front of my house blocking my driveway for days! During the blizzard not one of them helped me clear the snow for parking but they each did their own (and most of them are the police). You're a police officer, you can write tickets. Be prepared for the backlash from the cars you wrote tickets on though. If the neighbors know you're the police then realize it's not to difficult to figure out that you are the one that wrote them. Get ready for a keyed car, broken windows, flattened tires, etc. Not saying it's write, but of they're ignorant enough to park in a space you cleaned, they're ignorant enough to do damage to your property. But yes, your patch says Chicago police so you can write them.

OT rahmbos plan to give officers 12 days medical is a good idea , 95% of officers never use medical and are proud of it.

Many officers have abused mediacal when denied time due .

Fire medical roll abusers , allow officers to have a bank of 240 days mediacal after completing probation . This would protect us and the abusers would soon be out of time due and carried awop .

I don't think many officers would disagree with that medical plan .
It would also cover police women during pregnancy .

MOst Officers are tired of the phony medical roll abusers .

MEMORIAL SGT. HAYMAKER 22 FEB 2011

Tuesday, 22 Feb 2011 marks the 1 year anniversary of the death of Sgt. Haymaker, killed while traversing the perilous conditions along Lake Shore Drive in route to an in progress call on 22 February 2010.
A brief memorial will be held near the site at the app. time of death, to wit, 0500 hrs.
Interested members need to be at 4100 N. Marine Drive (Irving Park) no later than 0445 hrs.
Personally, I believe every district should send 'at least one (1) car' to participate.
For further information, go to the Chicago Police Sergeants website and click on the lead topic for all the information relative to time, location, parking etc.

2 things. #1. The officers that were illegally placed in the Behaviorial program are supposed to be getting a check from a p.o.'s class action suit. The amount is supposed to be about 25,000.00 per affected officer. I wish they would have placed me in that program. #2. There are plans to restructure the entire summer festivities along the lakefront. From what we are hearing these are major changes that deal with unheard of things. These plans will be submitted to the NEW mayor. These plans were getting rave reviews and are supposed to make Chicago a brand new city with vision.

Every single state employee should be flooding the Governor, and Madigan's email with messages urging them to stop the assault on our benefits. It is a small step that each of us can do to help ourselves. I too have watched what is happening in Wisconsin and I have to believe that regardless of what they are saying publicly, politicians did not expect crowds of 60,000-70,000 protesters to show up. my guess is they are hesitant to have the same thing happen here. Flood their emails.....

This city is unrecognizable, once vibrant & prosperous filled with a hard working class & thriving businesses. Now broke & abandoned by businesses because of extortion tax rates, filled with a new class of people, the " entitled ".
Never worked a day, never went to school, can't obey the law, no exercise of parental control, & supported soley by the labor of others.
America, what the fuck happened? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?
Was I asleep? Or maybe I missed what happened because from the time I started working in the 7th grade delivering newspapers till I retired from C.P.D. 3 years ago, I worked & managed to give Uncle Sam 4 years of service.
I'm not exceptional, I just did what everyone did, well almost everyone.
Now because of decades of corruption there's talk about not paying me for 30 years of being cursed, spat upon, puked on, mocked, punched & kicked?
Only thru the grace of God I was never shot or shot at, and now you say there's no money?

WBBM radio reporting that the Detroit school system is in meltdown, with a $329 million deficit that may result in half of the schools being closed -- resultng in class sizes of 60 and more in the remaining high schools.

They obviously won't have the money to buy protective bulletproof glass booths for the teachers, either...

This is the way we are going -- population dropping, but school after school after school must be built.

Unreal.

Daley's latest, on WGN-TV -- he wants Amtrak to provide passenger service to the nonexistent "western terminal" tha tthe airlines don't want built...

Like someone here said, he should be winding things down, telling people that "this matter should be better discussed with the new administration..."

I will share something I just found out, although it's been around for some time. Earned Income Tax Credit.

What that means is low earners get refunds that exceed their contributions to the government.

Example: A waitress with three kids makes $23,000 and contributes $2,000 in federal taxes. Under EITC, she not only gets all her money back, but $4,000 MORE, for a total of $6,000.

I have no problem with low earners paying little or no taxes, but how can they get a refund that EXCEEDS what they contributed? Answer: WE pay for it. This is BS>

WGN-TV -- Kids are describing the new "high-nutrition" Chicago school lunches as "nasty." They reportedly throw much of the fruit and vegetables away, toss the whole lunch and eat "cookies and slushies from the canteen," or wait until they get home to eat -- probably Flamin' Hots and grape soda, something more to their abbrieviated tastes.

Why do we bother? There are no responsible parents to set examples -- and government makes a terrible mommy.

Just wondering if I can take matters into my own hands off duty with some parking ticket enforcement in front of my house?

Your question alone on the blog should tell you something. In my 27 years of being the Police, "taking things into your own hands off-duty" usually ends up bad for you. Sometimes ya' gotta'....this is not the case.

I'm sure that you can reach out to the guys on beat that you live on, in the district you live, or those outside units who may make an occasional pass through, to check for, and cite those vehicles that may be in violation. Don't jack-pot yourself on this one son. It ain't worth it, as much as it pisses you off.

Speaking from experience, and learned.

Define "illegal cars"?
------

My guess is that someone has a 'parking entitlement complex' and views any car that got the spot in front of their house as an "illegal car".

Careful with vendetta ticket writing. You'll get a lot of them opposed in court and if a pattern develops or you get a citizen who wants to screw you back, there are ways they can make you wish you had just let it go.

2/21/2011 05:26:00 AM

thanks for the input guys. to the posters who keep asking define illegal? ok I will, no city sticker, b.s. indiana plates on ghetto hoopties, expired tags, cars parked blocking your own driveway then leaving it there for a couple days because the tire is flat, cars that the 26 drive with tints black as night that you have to deal with if you pull them over, parking facing the wrong direction, etc. All of this occurring in front of your home. Believe me, this is more than "I shoveled and someone parked in my spot." I don't care about that, I don't put lawn furniture in front of my house, if i cared enough about that I would of put a vacuum cleaner or some other junk in front. This is about assholes who don't give a fuck about anything- their neighbors especially.

I realize this sounds like a dumb question that I asked. If you see a crime off duty your still the police right? I get it. But for whatever reason writing a ticket is different. why? I don't know. You can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and witness a shooting and lock someone up for murder off duty but I feel you would be harassed for issuing a citation. Anyway, thanks again.

Police said the victim heard glass breaking in her basement on the 8200 block of South Kingston Avenue at about 10 a.m.

After grabbing her handgun, the woman confronted two intruders, but struck only one when she opened fire, police spokeswoman Officer Anne Dwyer said. The second man fled.

The wounded intruder, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Vincent Fleming, 20, of the 300 block of West 42nd Street, was pronounced dead a short time later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

2/21/2011 10:05:00 AM
--------------------
I agree with regards to the abusers, but be careful what you wish for. If you are unfortunate enough to be seriously injured off duty or come down with a horrible sickness that plan will force you off this job and don't think the city won't separate you. The dept. has known for years who the abusers are. Don't give up anything willingly that we fought for.

It should be interesting to see what the interest rate the bond holders will be demanding and Illinoisans will have to pay in order to borrow this money and whether the entire sale will be a success.

Hang onto your hats folks. Should this fail I have to wonder what "plan B" is gonna be... you know?

Oil Prices and O'hare expansion hearing.

Last week the airlines received a one week delay in their battle with the city on the O'hare airport expansion project.

http://www.kwqc.com/Global/story.asp?S=14060348

With the overthrow of the Libyan government going on and Gaddafi threatening to burn all the oil fields if he falls from power -- we are currently looking at another Kuwait story. Oil has already risen over $6/brl to $92 for west Texas oil and Brent oil is over $104/brl.

Not good news for the airlines operating expenses however you can bet it provides good ammo as a reason why they should not pay for an airport expansion at this time.

Anyways...

Don't forget to top off tonight. Tomorrow will be more expensive me thinks.

"the Gold Braid bill was pushed by the city (Jane Byrne)as a quid pro quo benefitting the heavy, at the time the retirement age was dropped from 55 to 50 in 1982. Prior to that, exempts retired with their career service pension."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well, you ALMOST have it right.
The "Gold Braid" bill was passed around 1965. I came on the job in 1970 and it was in place then. The minimum retirement in 1970 was 55/25. It was dropped about five years later to 53/23, and then about 1980 to 50/20.

Jane Byrne had absolutely nothing to do with the "Gold Braid" bill, as she didn't become mayor for about 15-20 years after it was passed. However, she did have alot to do with the 50/20. There is no question that we received bigger raises and more benefits under Jane Byrne than any other mayor in history - and she was only mayor for four years - until Richie Daley screwed her.

There is a rule about policing for personal business. There was an officer in the 1st district who got a cr# for loading zone tickets in front of his business, while he was off duty. Sorry don't remember the rule or exact wording. The violations you explained sound legit, but there must be someone you know in 008 that can write them for you.

Who here still wishes the republican would have won the governor’s spot.

2/21/2011 09:28:00 AM

a) Police and Fire are exempt.
b) the gov- is cleaning up the mess of the most liberal state in the USA. The root of that problem? Democrat control

2/21/2011 07:25:00 PM

For now police and fire are exempt. But what happens a year from now?

The fire department should privatize the ambulance service in Chicago. It is done in other parts of the country. Why not here? That would save some serious money.

Detroit police: Pizza driver killed armed robber

DETROIT —
Detroit police say a pizza delivery driver shot and killed one of three men trying to rob him.

Police say three men approached the driver Sunday night, and one of them produced a handgun.

Police tell The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press that the driver then pulled his own handgun and fatally shot the armed robber, described as in his late teens or early 20s. The other suspects fled.

Police say the driver had a license to carry a concealed weapon.

read... it works trust me

"illegal cars parked"

the post says nothing about dealing with someone who took the spot in front of the house.

Reading (i.e. 'comprehension') works just fine for ME. Not so much for YOU, though.

If you're going to bitch, you should be really sure of what you're bitching about. The original post definitely DID refer to the cars in front of the house. TWICE.

Below is the original post. I capitalized the critical words, just so you might actually NOTICE them this time around.
**

OT

The blizzard really brought this to my attention. Just wondering if I can take matters into my own hands off duty with some parking ticket enforcement IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE? This is getting out of control where my family cannot even park in FRONT OF OUR HOUSE due to illegal cars sitting there. I've tried everything first, 311, request tows, called 911 (feel bad- 008 coppers too busy for this petty nonsense). I don't want any smart a55 answers, just wondering if others have done it and did you get a hard time about it? thanks.

Anytime there is an annoying vehicle parked in front of my home thereby causing me to have to walk 30, sometimes 40 extra feet to get to my man-house beer cooler, I call my crackhead and let him know I want that car to disappear. After I spend ten minutes explaining exactly what I mean, my problem is usually gone by morning.

You can write tickets anywhere in the city. The tickets need to be turned in wherever you signed out the ticket book.

The second poster is absolutely correct, although I thought it might have been a few years after that. It was changed at some point though, and I may be thinking of that. Originally exempt ranks, including Detectives and other D-2's, didn't vest until after 3 years. Later it was changed so that best 48 months out of the last 10 years applied to everyone.

This new salary cap for pension purposes pretty much knocks it out anyway.

Chicago Home Prices Hit Post-Bust Low

Home prices in the Chicago area in December hit a new low since the housing market’s peak in 2006, falling 30 percent to levels not seen since March 2002, according to a widely-watched housing index released Tuesday morning.

The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller Home Price Index showed that Chicago was one of 11 markets in December that hit their lowest level since home prices peaked, which locally was in September 2006.

In the Chicago market, according to the index, December home prices slipped 1.4 percent from November, slightly less than the 2.2 percent drop in November. On a year-over-year basis, Chicago-area prices were down 7.4 percent. “Chicago’s been surprisingly weak,” said Karl Case, a professor emeritus of economics at Wellesley College and one of the economists who created the index.

Three cops dead in St. Petersburg inside of 30 days. More proof that the war on LEOs is increasing in intensity nation-wide. All deaths (and the U.S. Marhsahll injured) resulting from shoot-outs. Can't believe St. Pete's doesn't mandate vest wear, but looks like it may not have made much of a difference. Get well SPDP.

Um, this is not a personal business. It's a residential neighborhood and there's no monetary benefit for the guy who might be writing the ticket.

Leave the medical alone. We are exposed to diseases and traumas the public cannot even imagine. It's there for a reason.

That being said, punish the abusers. Don't use the scattershot approach and blast everyone for the behavior of a few. Punish the hell out of the FEW who blatantly abuse.

Video of the guy who's on the medical for the 'bad back' but out shoveling his walk and his neighbor's. Yup. Video of the girl who's running a half-marathon while on medical for a 'bad knee'? Yup. Video of the gal with the many-months-long 'miscarriage' who spends every day hauling her kids to playdates, the store, the dog groomer and the hairdresser? Yup.

Hammer them, but don't punish every one of US for what THEY do.
