Pension Mess

We're sure this plays right into the hands of the politicians, pitting government worker against government worker, but facts are facts.

Here's the top 100 Chicago Police pensions as of 2010. Phil Cline tops the list with a pension of almost $147,000. The rest reads like a "Who's Who" of clout.

And here's a list of the top 100 government pensions in Illinois. Almost every single one is from one of the educators funds, Teachers or University. The top name gets a pension of over $390,000. The name at number 100 receives over $178,000 - $30,000 more than Phil Cline.

That tells us that while police gold braid pensions might seem a bit high, those aren't the ones bankrupting the system.

Making more off pension, all the police people on that list, than all blue shirts make in a year in base salary. Rather sickening. I can understand why people r calling for pension reform. But my pension will never come close to theirs. That's what's not being reported.

OT just did my Federal and State Tax return. Watch for the state tax on items bought through the internet that were not state taxed. The state automatically enters the amount they feel you owe (based on income) because everyone buys things over the internet. If your not careful this can cost you about $100.00 or more. If your doing your taxes electronically (it just pops up)........ I think lawsuits will follow.......

For what it's worth, looking at the top 3 on the non-cop list, Tapas K. Das Gupta is a cancer surgeon and the head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at UIC, and Edward Abraham and Riad Barmada are orthopedic surgeons at UIC. Somehow a $300K pension for surgeons who could have been making $1M a year in private practice maybe doesn't sound as outrageous.

But you're right, you are playing right into the hands of the politicians by pitting the cops and firemen against the rest of the government pension recipients. Divide and conquer and weaken the opposition is their strategy, and you bought right into it. They want you to say I got mine, fuck you, so you'll go away happy to have a crumb.

It's the politicins that destroyed the pension not the foot soliders. We put into the pension every two weeks until retirement and also get ZERO Social security. I have been telling all at my district that would listen exactly this for years.

It is simple look at your property tax bill about 65% goes to "education". Yet our countries students rank near the bottom of the civilized worlds and our cities is near the bottom of our countries, despite being at the top of $ spent per student. Of course since Cook county is filled with criminal police haters and many good citizens dislike us because we are pressured to write tickets costing them $ we will be hit hard by Rahm if he wins. It's a no lose for him steal our $ and get good P.R. while doing it.Of course we can't strike as the teachers always threaten to do. Our union should make every effort to differentiate us from other public sector unions while we still have a union. One side note I don't think this is the time to have inexperienced union leadership think before you vote.

Not Exactly Politically Correct
Hey, Mike. Wake up! It's 2011. And boy, from what I hear you're lucky it's 2011.

There was a nasty rumor going around that Mike made a derogatory comment at a Midway Airport roll call about an Officer's Italian ethnicity. Turns out it wasn't a rumor at all.

Mike was ranting about how the FOP election was fixed and was going to be stolen away from him. Mike didn't realize that Frank Balestri, a member of the election committee, was present at the roll call. Officer Balestri challenged Mike's comments about the election being fixed. Mike responded by questioning the legitimacy of the FOP election with a name like Balestri on the election committee.

You can read the letter sent to Shields by the President of the Italian American Police Association that demands an apology. IAPA Letter to Shields.

Here is an idea for pension reform.....your pension should be based on your highest career service rank....IE, if you happen to be appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief in your last 4 years on the job, from the rank of LT, you would only be paying monthly what a LT would be paying and your would draw a pension of a LT. This would save us millions upon millions, and you just might get some bosses that want to do right by the officers and are not in it for monetary gain. Just an idea

Retired state employees? Why yes, their pensions make our look dirt poor by comparison. In addition, they get a 3% cummulative raise every year, plus free health care, free optical and they pay 10 bucks for dental. Their spouse has to pay $190 per year for health care. And, that is not the worst of it. Part-time teachers can retire witha pension with free health care for life. And, I mean part-time. All you need is 7 years of part time teaching to qualify. The next time you look at your tax bill or pay your kids college tuition, think about that. The educational unions have bribed our legilatures for years. The worst pensions in the state of illinois belong to us.

Yeah...

This is some cherry-picked bullshit in that nothing is said about the people on this list being clouted up retired exempts but this shit is being played as if all coppers get these "rather generous" Police pensions.

Getting paid as an exempt SHOULD be reward enough. Period.

Pension should be based on career service rank.

"Gold Braid" is another way for king shorty to buy/ensure loyalty.

(Oh... and perhaps a slickly worded confidentiality agreement to further ensure silence after retirement? Persistent rumors for many years about that.)

Now on the other hand...

Some of the amounts listed for teachers does merit "the raised Vulcan eyebrow" of curiousity.

Who are the people redacted/not named?

CPS/Board of Ed. ties?

Everyone IS aware that CPS during the shortshanks era was shit-hemorrhaging money.

Perhaps it was a conduit for a vast majority of crime king shorty's financial fuckery & back of the bus 3 card monte?

The curious among us have been saying the reasons trotted out for Michael Scott doing himself in really didn't make any sense at all unless someone was alarmed that the G was going to start squeezing really hard and Scott was told, "yourself or your family."

Heh... The Black Ops branch of Daley Inc. has done some rather strange, curious and interesting shit over the years. We wonder if the vaunted feds have been "moled?"

Given the current inertia regarding the hijinks of Daley Inc., it is entirely possible.

Heh... Young Mr. Fitzgerald has been actively sitting on his hands. We predict a high DOJ appointment or judgeship as his reward.

Will the funky muthafuckahs get away with it all?

If only there was investigative reporting worth a shit & two dead flies in this town.

If only the feebs were just merely worth a shit but again, their expertise seems to exist in the realm of burying/hiding their fuck ups while displaying a coppers drawers sunny side up for public titillation. We again point to the feeb satellite office at HQ and the absence of one at City Hall, County, Board of Ed etc.

As the song goes, "Same as it ever was."

WRT: Taxes.

If you're one of those people that use the government tax system as a form of forced payroll savings so that you will get a tax refund at the end of the year you may want to re-think that practice.

You know what I'm talking about.

You intentionally under-claim your exemptions so that they take out more taxes and "hold" the money for you.

Look at Illinois recent record for paying its bills on time.

Then look at what happened in California.

Next time around when you file your tax return you may not receive a very timely tax refund if you have one coming or even worse it may be an i.o.u. instead.

You wouldn't let a company that you know is going bankrupt hold your money for a year would you?

Think about it.

Fill out a new W-4 form -- talk to your tax pro.

Thought for the day.

The Tail of Two City Contracts.

One is for parking meters the other is for the union pensions.

Why is the parking meter contract to the friends of city hall written in stone and untouchable while the union contract should be re-negotiated in good faith?

In fact why are all the city and state agreements for corporate tax breaks untouchable when we can not afford them. The same as we can not afford the union pensions?

Maybe ALL the contracts need to be put on the table. Bankruptcy and the threat of bankruptcy is a powerful motivator. It creates a crisis that should not be allowed to go to waste.

The politicians keep telling us that we are all in this together yet I don't see them or their friends sharing the pain.

I wonder how much difference it would make to cap all public-employee pensions at the median household income for the state ($56,235 in 2008).

Nobody should be cut off to starve, but half the people in the state get by on that much or less. It doesn't seem fair to jack up taxes on everyone, including the poor, to give somebody more than that, plus medical benefits.

2/17/2011 12:36:00 AM

It's called the "use tax" and the state wants/expects you to pay any taxes for items purchased over the internet or for items where the state did not get tax $. I doubt many people pay this tax.

Don't forget chicago aldermen and members of the park district board and county board. They all are entitled to pensions and health care benefits after only serving a few short years. They cannot collect until they reach retirement age, but they they are locked in and can buy years of ser vice to increase the payout. And, as I recall they get 80% of their salary, more then us. If you put govt. pensions in rank order of best to worst in Illinois, CPD comes out on the bottom.

All exempts on the current list of 100 contributed to the pension fund from day one of their police careers. Most, if not all the members listed have at least 30 years or more of sworn police service. In order for an exempt member to secure a gold braid pension he must work in the exemt ranks 3 years and a day, four years for the maximum benefit. Most members on the list were exemt over 8 years. A typical exempt member's regular work day starts at about 10/12 hours without overtime pay, and goes up from their. After their regular work day they have call out duties. They may get one weekend off per month, if they are lucky. For their dedication they are forced to take unpaid days off and work extra duty on some holidays. None came on the job and went immediately to exempt. That is a recent anomaly. The reward for all the days away from home and family is the pension. They are not the enemy in this. Politicians are trying to divide and conquer.

Not a cop, I can see the point of a surgeon who can make millions in private practice but still, if the salary is posted and listed and you do not want the gig, do not take it. Also whoever wrote the pension law for politicians must have been smoking weed to get that passed. How can you get 85% of your salary, boosted by a two week gig for a freaking part time office gig where you do not take phone calls or emails or respond to letters? Cancel pension for politicians.

You almost had me shedding a tear for our poor overworked and totally deserving exempts. Almost.

I can count many on that list who now have spots paying over $100,000 yearly and who are still collecting over 100k in pensions.

Must be payback for all those rough shifts they had in their office answering the phone and giving those nice inside jobs to their fellow downtrodden commander's sons and daughters, girlfriends, mistresses and wives.

Phew, I feel like maybe writing a letter or something for all the hard times those commanders have had.

And what about this "revised" list still listing deceased exempt positions as receiving a pension? i wouldn't bet against it, not on this department, the most corrupt in the country.

One thing I never got in that retirement seminar, how do I get one of those nice paying jobs? Not the ones in Wal-Mart of as a security guard on midnights for $12.00 an hour but those good ones working for the state or CTA?

And how many years will my family get my full pension after I am dead? Joe Curtin is still listed, so is Matt Casey. I believe they both had funerals.

I am a police officer and will never be exempt or even a sgt on this job and I agree with you. We may not like everyone on the list but 99% of the police worked for their pensions. It is only since Supt. Cline and now Weis that people have been just given exempt positions without moving up the ranks. This is wrong and this should be stopped. But otherwise this article is just to divide and conquer and looks like its working.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mike's ticket did not want unit numbers on the ballot. This was decided in past elections. The officer involved is on the election committee, but he did not decide the question an arbitrator did. The copper in not part of the city-wide ticket and used to be a unit rep and may still be one. The Union to be fair took all members out of the decision and had an arbitrator there for the candidates meeting. He made the decision to keep what has been decised for the past five elections in force.

Mike did not recognize the copper that was on the election committee and he made the comment right in front of him. Kind of stuck his foot in his mouth. Since it is the same 90-100 officers that go to all the meetings Mike should known who was on the election committee.

*********

GO FUCK YOURSELF boss!!!

How do you explain D/C Mike Cronin who worked 30+ years as a gang crimes specialist/detective and at the very end of his career Cline bumps him to commander and then deputy.

Just so everyone is on board with the MATH Cronin's pension should be maxe around $95,000 (as a maxed out detective at 75%) which would put him at a yearly pension of $ 71,250. Let me say nobody will argue he wasn't a hard workin copper/a great policeman and he deserves every penny of his deserved pension.

HOWEVER FUCK STICK, because Cline decided to pad his friend's pension with those end of the career promotions Cronin now gets $105,028 a year.

So "boss" you're telling us he deserves an extra $33,778 bump a year for the rest of his life because he was friends with CLINE???

Let me be the first to say YOU (Gold stars) ARE THE ENEMY AND GO FUCK YOURSELFS!!!

Your right they all are not the enemy but the reward for doing that also includes the extra pay. And were you forced to take the job? I doubt it. You surely must have known that it would include long days at times and being away from your family. These gold braid and brass bill pensions in the CPD and CFD are what are hurting us in our departments. The city isnt paying their share of them like they were suppose to and they probably never will either. We should all get a pension at our career service rank and thats it!!!!!!
Or better yet you want to keep a lot of the back stabbing down and the fucking over the next guy to get ahead and get these spots make eveyone get a blue shirt pension.

Are you serious. You are either a gold star or a district secretary. Everyone on that list is clouted up the ass. Merit after merit promotion. Culminating with a pension that is higher than any patrolmans salary. They are the poster boys for what is wrong with our pension system. NO

The 3% is NOT compounded and you only get the 3% over 20 years max.

For instance you retire at at 55 you only get the 3% until you reach 75.

If you are a sergeant with 29 years of service like me you will get an increse of $91 a month each year for 20 years . . .

It seems the officer on disability is a bit sensitive. Yes, there are many on this list that truely deserve it and wish that they could come back to work. But, there are a few, probably more then a few, who should not be on this list. I do know two officers who were badly injured and spent nearly 20 years on the disability rolls. They did come back to work and worked three years to boost their retirement. If they wer magically cured or not I cannot say, I am not their doctor. So, it is not beyond belief that an officer can come off of disability, retire and then take another government job.

How did coming back to work boost their retirement? If they were on duty disability for being hurt then all those years the city paid into their pensions and when it comes time to retire they would go out at their present rank with all their seniority. They never lost a step raise or their rank so there is no need to come back to work to "boost their retirement." Another know nothing bullshit made up comment from just another uninformed copper. Sure wish all you know it alls would read the contracts and the law so you might actually come on here and know what you are talking about.
