Pothole Season

They're out there. Tire flatteners, rim benders, axle crackers:
  • The snow is melting and the potholes are appearing. Chicago-area drivers are challenged every year by an obstacle course in the city and suburbs.

Potholes are caused by the freezing and thawing of pavement; the more cycles area roadways go through, the greater the chance of potholes. The condition of the streets also plays a part.

"Since Saturday we have received 500 calls about potholes throughout the city of Chicago. Of those 500, 400 came yesterday," said CDOT's Bobby Ware.

Word is there are no pool cars citywide (again), so drive carefully. Those unfortunate enough to suffer damage to personal cars can file claims with the city to recoup some of your costs at this link here.

If you actually mean the BRIDGE just south of a/3, it's going to be torn down, so don't expect much repair there. Use the underpass and take the thirty seconds at the light instead of destroying your rims and undercarriage.

Recover some of your costs from the city for pothole damage? Are You kidding? I filed a claim, traffic accident reports, photos, towing reports, etc. almost two years ago. Nothing yet. The finance committee just refuses to return phone calls or e-mails. They just ignore you. Period! My car hit a hole on a dark street, Division, just by the projects, that smashed my rim, and tire and some undercarriage.

Good luck filing that claim.

Years back, after the city's tree in the parkway finally fell on my car, totaling it out I sent a claim to the city, as instructed.
To add credibility to my plight, I included the 3 City Service Requests, acknowledged by the Alderman's office to trim those dangerous hanging limbs over the past 18 months without any service or response.
Their reply was that since I was calling for a year and a half to have the tree trimmed, I must have known that the tree was in dangerous condition and should not have continued to park...IN FRONT OF MY OWN HOUSE!

The claim was denied.

Do you think these potholes could have more to do with the shoddy road building and corrupt contracts than the infamous freeze/thaw cycle they always blame?
A perfect example is Wisconsin. They have harsher winters and more freeze/thaw cycles than us but they have far,far fewer potholes. Maybe it's because they build their roads correctly and aren't forever being ripped off by crooked contractors.
But it's easier to blame something else instead of admit the real cause. It's the Chicago way!

I don't understand why a city would pay "damages" for a car hitting a pothole anyway.

This is Chicago. There are potholes. There are also curbs, pedestrians, other vehicles. Hitting them is bad. Don't do it.

Just seems ridiculous to me, not like any city can prevent potholes from occurring.

Use a pool car and go 45mph and you won't feel a thing.

Bike Overpass Proposed For Lakefront At Chicago River

"About $34 million in federal and state funds have been secured for the project, which has an estimated construction cost of $40 million to $45 million, Steele said. Ideally, construction would start on the project's north segment in the first half of 2012, he said."

Paying for damage is the City's admission that they are failing to maintain and repair the pavement properly.

If the pavement was properly built and maintained, the pothole problem would be minimal.

Now some asshat puts the blame on the driver? What a clown. When you are driving along a city street at 30 MPH, and sometimes on a dark street, you do not see the huge hole until you are up on it and many times not at all. It blows your tire, bends your rim that canot be fixed. And, if you are unlucky, under carriage damage. I was coming out of the credit union on 111th street two years ago and within 2 mninutes, two cars hit a huge pothole and blew their tires. The city knew about the potholes and did nothing about them for months. They have a system for filing a claim because they admit some liability. They never pay full freight.

We recall a bit of cpd stupidity regarding city streets and hubcaps where coppers were put on bad paper for lost hub caps. It seemed the Chevys with the full wheel covers were a source of aggravation. Yes, supervisors and inspectors were writing coppers up for a design flaw aggravated by the perpetually shitty streets in this town. Yes, coppers responding to a call would hit a pothole, lose a wheel cover and throw out the anchor and scramble to retrieve the damn stupid thing.

We laughed out loud when some "urban entreprenuers" relieved some exempt vehicles parked at a big meeting at the academy of some wheel covers for resale at Maxwell St.

Anybody remember that one?
