Oh Mikey Mikey Mikey

This wasn't a fight we wanted. It isn't even a fight we needed to have. But as most people know, you don't get to pick the time, place or occasionally, even if you get dragged into a fight. FOP President Mike Shields has decided to pick a fight with the blog. Not only pick a fight, but pick it badly, frame it poorly and conclude it immaturely. The comments are alive with trolls accusing us of all sorts of crap, none of it provable and even more of it just outright wrong. We will attempt to address Mikey and the trolls in this post and frame the debate as it should have been in the first place if Mikey let his brain do his thinking instead of running off at the mouth:
  • Dear Kid,

Congratulations on your recent electoral victory. You managed to capture the presidency, but you ought to give Bella some credit. He ran a half-assed campaign and pretty much handed you the election. Don't read too much into it. You need to actually run the organization now, gain support, mend fences, build in-roads, introduce and support legislation, negotiate, fight battles, etc.

What you don't need to do is address the blog. The blog has been around for almost six years. When founded, it was touted as the new "Rumor Central" (you can ask an old-timer about that...it was before your time). A bathroom wall of sorts. A place for coppers to bitch, moan, vent, commiserate, exchange info, whatever. Your predecessor was in office for nine years and guess how many times he addressed the blog? We can think of two times total - once at a meeting to a direct question (yes, we attend regularly), once in the president's message. That's it. Donahue realized a president is supposed to lead; to be a big-picture guy; to be the face of the organization. If he addressed every little gripe people had, he'd be ineffectual. He'd also look like a petty ass, as you've so ably demonstrated.

Now, addressing part one of your post. You state in the opening paragraph that SCC was "critical of the FOP because the organization has not come out in favor of the proposed legislation [concealed carry]." Guilty as charged. Did you read the entire post though? All of the other supporters of Concealed Carry? Chicago Police Sergeants. Chicago Police Lieutenants. Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. Illinois Sheriffs Association. That's some pretty dignified company, isn't it? It's also under 4,000 people if we guess correctly. Chicago FOP is twice and more times that, the "big dog" so to speak. Why are we being followers and not leaders? Granted, you can argue that it's Donahue's fault for staying silent for so long, but you decided to make this a debate about our statement and your aims. How better to break with the past than become a leader in the Concealed Carry debate? You did read the Constitution of the FOP, didn't you?

    =====
to cultivate a spirit of fraternalism and mutual helpfulness among our members and the people we serve; to increase the efficiency of law enforcement and thus more firmly establish the confidence of the public in the service dedicated to the protection of life and property.
    =====

What better way to start making a name for yourself than uniting behind something that's already legal in 48 other states and tracks with the Constitution of the FOP in being good Americans. Oh wait, you've already decided the police are better than the citizens we serve. We quote:

    =====
"Chicago Police Officers already have that right"
    =====

That certainly seems to run contrary to the FOP Constitution. We aren't better than the citizens we serve. We are entrusted with certain duties and privileges to ensure domestic tranquility and help preserve the rights of all citizens. Driving a wedge between the public and the police will serve to undermine your stated agenda to protect benefits, wages and pensions by alienating those whose support we need to pass legislation, but we suppose you missed that.

And guess what else? Concealed carry IS an FOP issue. Who is going to be dealing with citizens carrying weapons? Who is going to be investigating citizen-involved shootings? We'll give you a hint kid...police officers. Don't you think the FOP would be better served with a well-trained force of officers not only familiar with the new laws, but actually well versed in investigating and enforcing laws that we might have had some input in? We run into more and more officers all the time who not only support Concealed Carry, but join the ISRA and the NRA to support these goals on a state and national level. Polling the membership and being a leader makes sense. Stop following the chiefs, sheriffs, lieutenants, sergeants, and especially the Daleys and see if a leadership role is a road to better days for the FOP. At the very least, we'd establish ourselves as a political force and not a punchline.

And now to the other part of your post. Yes, we are anonymous. We have been so since the beginning. Your challenge to "emerge from the anonymity of his basement" is childish in the extreme. First of all, we don't have a basement. Second, how long have you been on the job? Do you have any idea what happens to people who don't toe the company line? There's a reason we're anonymous and we're pretty sure you know exactly why. Your grandstanding is exactly that - without substance and a cheap shot. Congratulations. You've demonstrated in one single line exactly how you intend to crush all opposition to your rule. We aren't the Lodge. We've never purported to be anything but the voice of the street cop with no aspirations to anything but needling the powers that be, exposing cronyism and nepotism, and pointing out in our own inimitable style the nonsense that goes along with being a Chicago Police Officer.

Have you been clicking on our ads? Maybe going over to our PayPal account and dropping a few bucks in it just to say "thanks for the entertainment"? Oh yeah, you can't, because this is a hobby for us. A hobby. We post 3 to 5 articles a day, moderate 200 to 300 comments a night, pull in 14,000 visits daily and topped half-a-million visitors last month. And we do it for free. You've been in office for a month and posted two articles: One about the 1,300 SPARs story (that we broke here and drove the media to cover), the other attacking the blog.

Wow. How many visits does the FOP site get? We challenged Aguilar to post a hit counter once so we could compare. He never responded, so we can assume that if people want info, they don't go to the FOP website, despite the fact we've given the FOP the top link in our "Police Related Websites" tool bar for all six years. Instead of challenging the blog and making accusations you can't possibly prove, why aren't you using the blog? Maybe there's a way to bottle the lightning. You had your people all over the comment sections during the election, spouting off about your opponents (and they had their supporters here, too). We let most of it go, deleting only the most outrageous accusations and rhetoric.

This brings us to the other part of your post. The truly childish portion. We have never allowed speculation on the identities of SCC. That includes name, rank, assignment, etc. This blog was founded 6 years ago by police officers for police officers. We work the street in the trenches. Any comment guessing or accusing individuals of being "SCC" is summarily deleted without exception for the reasons previously stated above.

That being said, we know you, your brother and others have been spreading certain names around. It pops up in comments, it is whispered in bars, and it appears in e-mails we've received from others (including your brother and other candidates actually). We will state for the record that each and every name bandied about is wrong. And now, as the President of the Chicago FOP, you have a larger responsibility to protect the organization and its assets from harm. Not harm from us, but harm from those you so cavalierly accuse without any proof and without any ability to prove diddley shit.

You "keep hearing..."? Who the fuck are you trying to be? You have a storefront church that needs another few asses in the pews? You need some sort of federal handout or something? We "keep hearing" you bought cuff links for Rahm. We "keep hearing" you are using the FOP spot to run for a state senate seat. We "keep hearing" you like to drink the blood of kittens. You "keep hearing" crap and spreading bullshit, then you are going to get into a shitload of problems and it's going to be our dues money paying the price.

There is a whole host of other issues to deal with. Delegating responsibility can cover much of the tedium that goes with these things, but the buck stops at your desk. Camden, Farrell and Donahue can help in small ways but they can't give you the gravitas you so desperately seem to be seeking by attacking the blog. You are supposed to be the face of 16,000 active and retired members. Stop acting like a child and start acting like a leader. Learn a lesson from Donahue, concentrate on the big picture, and grow thicker skin. Our criticisms of the FOP started long before the blog and have existed since the founding of the union in one form or another. You aren't immune to criticism, but we never named you as the target. You made this personal. Grow the fuck up.

    Sincerely,
    SCC

PS - We'd probably respect you more if you didn't reply to any of this. We've already handed you your ass.

As a Chicago Police wife, it scares me that someone who lowers themselves to use comments such as "emerge from the anonymity of his basement" could potentially one day be defending my husband. Even as a police wife, I have heard stories of his "I am better than officers without a degree" statements. The way he ran was arrogant, he gave no credit to those who led before him and made a fool of himself with the ridiculous letters he whined were not posted in the FOP news letter. God help all of you with this "kid" and his high school comments representing you.

Wow. I wasn't aware of all this. I actually thought Shields was going to be the fresh air that the old, dusty FOP needed.

Mike Shields, don't mess with SCC. If you cause them problems, if you expose them or if you cause the site to go away, you will have thousands of YOUR members angry with you.

Be smart. SCC is a great place to float trial balloons, to take the pulse of the department and to gain necessary intel. Use it as a tool and don't be the enemy.

First off I think this guy was in over his head as a PPO. but anyway. Id bet money I know who SCC is but who cares? This is entertainment and sometimes some decent info. Judging by how outlandish and untrue some of the posts are look at it as nothing more. This is the gallows with a bigger audience. (Look it up if you dont know what it is). And I think its a joke that the union president has even responded to something on this blog. Do your job guy. Or are you to busy hiring people to do it for you?

I really didn't realize how slow this guy was on the uptake. To have such a limited view of the FOP's role, to completely misunderstand the actions of Walker in Wisconsin, and to suggest the lone voice of resistance should out himself...was Shields really that quick to cave to the lure of the machine, or was he attached from the beginning?

I'm getting a decent belly chuckle out of this one.

For those of you who voted for Shields, thanks alot.

He's a grandstanding little shit. OH did I mention the anger issues? Ooooh, should I have said that. I mean I "Heard" he has anger issues. I think there was also something about a district party, a wig, leather panties, a transvestite hooker and a certain newly elected FOP President. I mean "I heard" that.

That's the thing about riding the tiger. Eventually you get off and the tiger starts to look around hungrily. Shields reminds me of "Tiger Blood" Charlie Sheen. It isn't going to end pretty, but it will end.

The comparison of Shields to a storefront Reverend is apt. I fully expect some scandals and his own lack of maturity to end his reign as Prez in one term. Perhaps less, if he doesn't remove his head from his ass.

Judging by your rather lengthy response, I'd say the newly minted "Kid" President has gotten under your skin, SCC.

I only wish you would confront Shields face-to-face. That'd be interesting to say the least. I'd give a month's salary to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" for that exchange.

I imagine it had to be quite the internal debate mulling over whether to handle business the "old-school way" or via this forum. You obviously took some time to think about it, as your response was a few days in the making; this is the only time I can recall seeing SCC construct a dozen-plus paragraphs rebutting what many would say should have been ignored as just more criticism. For obvious as well as reasons stated here, one can understand taking this route, but you still tipped your hand somewhat, SCC. "Keep 'em stupid" is a phrase I was taught as a cadet. The same applies here, in my humble opinion.

My, how times have changed.

SCC you da man. Mike Shields, you say you're afraid politician would fuck with pensions, etc...if FOP supports CCW, maybe that's just your spin on the real reasons you refuse to poll the membership. Daley's on his way out. If you're going to be fucked with it'll happen whether or not you support CCW. Perhaps you owe favors, and are beholden to some of the daley bastards and that is why you are toeing the same line as the CPD brass who sold their soul for their spot and drank the kool-aid and then pissed it out onto the Constitution. The majority of the citizens that would obtain ccw are very patriotic, conservative, AND support the police.

In reality he was kissing J-Fed's ass when he said not only J-Fled was responsible for the crime reduction, but also the Chicago Police officers. J-Fled didn't do shit for Shitcago, crime reduction or the police officers. He was just an asshole showing his steroid muscles to the media and talking stupid shit. The more things "change" the more they stay the same. Shields is great proof of that.

WRT: conceal carry

-clip-

...

As Cesare Beccaria said in his book, “On Crimes and Punishments” (1764), “Such laws (laws that disarm the law-abiding) make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

This was true in 1764 and is still true!

http://www.sj-r.com/opinions/x1536001655/Letter-OK-concealed-carry-law-now

The hand gun band laws have failed us. The judicial system is failing us as the jails are so overcrowded the street punks know that they will not serve the full time as sentenced. None of this is a deterrent to crime. Let the people choose to protect themselves. The cops can't do it and the courts can't do it under the current environment.

I don't live in IL but I will probably visit this summer.
I will go from good guy to bad guy several times in my journey depending on what line on the map I cross. In my car I will have what I need to stay safe. A CCW permit from my state, (which doesn't even require one for CCW) and 2 handguns.
And no, blood does not "run in the streets" since AZ passed the 'constitutional carry' law.

If your FOP leadership won't stick up for the good guys then I'm glad you and a bunch of other cops commenting here do!

Toughen up your skin. When the FOP has to take on the likes of Rahm-bo in upcoming contract negotiations you will be eaten alive if you display this level of immaturity.

"Leaders" don't say things tantamount to challenges for a fight in the alley after school.

Frankly, I was surprised that you took this road in one of your first acts as FOP president.

PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND AND JUST SIMPLY MOVE ON TO THE IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING THE LODGE. You have displayed a huge weak point in your character. Don't let Rham-bo and his minions capitalize on it by taking this any further.

While moronic CPD exempt sycophants and Chicago Democratic politicians will (unsuccessfully and without substance) argue against concealed carry for decent, emotionally sound, trained, law abiding citizens, most all coppers are in favor of responsible, well-crafted concealed carry laws.

Unlike Donahue, Shields acknowledges the existence of SCC and might even scan the blog as time permits.

Mike you are a coward! Why don't you drop the weasle words and say what you REALLY mean...

"I can assure you that we do not need this distraction" [I can't handle this part of my job]

"We need to have a united front and focus on what’s important" [Concealed carry is not important]

"I am content to have FOP remain neutral on the issue" [Of course "Neutral" means "opposed" by default]

" the NRA and the Supreme Court of the United States have done quite well for 2nd Amendment advocates" [No thanks to me!]

"Please be aware that many of the groups supporting conceal/carry would happily do away with our collective bargaining rights " [Of course, I will not name any of these alleged "groups" because there aren't any. Instead, I will name a governor of another state]

"our State Lodge endorsed Bill Brady as a candidate for Governor" [Because as our members knew he was the best choice, period]

"Concealed/carry may be a good thing" [It's not]

"However, it won’t pay your kid’s private school tuition and it won’t pay the bills once you are retired" [Assuming, of course your adult kid doesn't get killed at a White Castle on 69/Western with no way to defend himself in this hellhole of a state]

"We need to stay focused on issues that really matter" [Concealed carry doesn't matter to me - I don't care that my immediate family members are rendered defenseless - so it shouldn't matter to you]

"not get dragged into a debate on whether civilians can arm themselves with concealed firearms" [I hate debates]

"If this sergeant wants to emerge from the anonymity of his basement and debate me" [I love debates]

"Please be aware that many of the groups supporting conceal/carry would happily do away with our collective bargaining rights and turn us into a group of low paid, at-will employees with no pension. In our last election cycle, our State Lodge endorsed Bill Brady as a candidate for Governor. Brady was a terrible choice if pensions, wages, benefits and health care were the State Lodge’s primary concern. He was a great choice if the 2nd Amendment was the State Lodge’s number one election issue. Brady would have been just like Wisconsin’s Scott Walker. No one wants what happened in Wisconsin to happen in Illinois"

I'm really irratated by that whole generalization. Once again it's the evil Republicans that want to take away everything. They know the employee isn't the problem, it's the democRAT-vote-cultivating politics that drove all of our pensions into the ground, and the unions are as much at fault than anyone. The unions fight for every wage increase and benefit, but support the very same people during election. Am I the only that sees that? How can democRATs be the source AND soultion to all of our problems?

I work for the city and have just as much, if not more (the city would lay me off before police), at risk that police officers. I do not want to see myself or any other city worker lose another dime to Daley-esque corruption. The police pension is not the only fund riddled with problems and abuse, but how long before the pyramid scheme implodes and there is no pension left? How long can the pension last when there are more people drawing from it than contributing, or drawing at a higher rate than deserved?

Our pensions will dissapear because of mismanagement and because democRATs use it as a slush fund to reward political support, not because some evil Republican took it away.

Some tough choices are ahead and the days of the strong and vengeful unions are over. The economy sucks, unemployment is high, the savior does nothing to stimulate the economy and create jobs. Some unions are fighting just to keep jobs and making tough sacrafices, while other unions are asking for more and more when there is no more to be given. We all have some tough choices ahead of us and our downfall will the desire to keep what we have when so many have lost everything. The public already demonizes city workers, do you think they will care when the city cuts wages and benefits?

This city is corrupt to the bone, and too much money is pissed away on policies and services that will never pay dividends. The spending needs to stop as much as the pension systems and pay scales need an overhaul. Walker sees that, so should everyone else. His plan does more to save jobs and pensions than leaving the system in place; a time bomb that will explode if not diffused.

This is why I voted Bella and encouraged others to do so. Bella knows tact and discretion, two planets missing from our current leader's universe. Shields has balls, but he appears to be substituting them for his brain. Employing his actual brain would be nice to strike a balance between balls AND brains when dealing with pertinent issues facing the FOP membership. You can't do it on balls alone.

Not only is this cannon loose, it could blow at any time. Not very comforting or inspiring leadership at this point in time. Still, I hold out hope for improvement.

I can not say I know Mikey other then going to meetings. Mikey seems to be very insecure. Mikey was ignored in Springfield so he hires Donahue after he say he did a bad job as President. A good move. Mikey does not want to be in front of the cameras for every issue so he hires Pat Camden. Another good move. He throws out the guy in the last election with the highest vote total. A bad move. He throws out the lawyer with the longest history in the bargaining unit before they can pick his brain. Another bad move. They hire a Captain who quit the union to help with shootings. Maybe another bad move but time will tell. He brings in McCarthy, a bosses kid, who was J-Fled Lawyer as field Rep. A bad move. This kid lost his election. Because of his lack of experience Mikey had to hire Farrell to cover up McCarthy’s short comings. He brings in another guy as field rep. So we have two guys who I do not want at my shootings if it happens again to be replaced by three retired guys. WHY? Why because Mikey at least knows that he and his band of rookies could f*uck up your life by making a mistake.

So why did we elect him? Hope and change? We all know how that is going in Washington. 15 Nov can not come fast enough for me!

Stay safe and never trust a fed! And never trust a boss who took a meritorious promotion. They already sold their soul to the devil. And never trust a lawyer especially one who worked for J-Fled!

SCC, I gave you some grief yesterday about the Brizzard thread. I felt you deserved it as you weren't being objective or even remotely fair.

Today I give you two big thumbs up for this article. I think you were spot on in your comments!!!!

The FOP should use this site to its advantage. The majority of the membership doesn't have the time to go to the meetings. More importantly being anonymous with legitimate gripes can and is comforting.

I voted for Shields. I am already regretting it. I thought this kid was going to be the shot in the arm the FOP needed. Shields is clearly about Shields. He is not about the FOP. He won't get my vote under any circumstances next time around. Officers both young and old were worried about one thing with Shields. That worry being he can only be FOP President twice. Shields won't even be close to retirement age should he win twice. I was worried that he might be tacit since he would have to come back to a uniform once his FOP time was done. I never thought he would just use the FOP as a springboard into politics. Shame on me for being so ignorant. I WONT GET FOOLED AGAIN!!!

Thanks to the city wide team to. The half assed job you guys had done the last few years and total closed mindedness to anyones thoughts outside the box caused this kid to win. Funny how the average copper on the street is always the loser.

Ok, I will admit that I voted for Shields. I wanted something new and different. This bullshit is NOT what I had in mind. Mike, as an elected official, you need to understand that social media is a huge part of your success or failure. This blog helped you get elected. And, good or bad, it will spread the word about things the FOP is doing. To come out and let your temper show with childish comments is just bad form. Is this how you will react every time the news media or facebook or whatever else says something you don't like? News media and social media forms get to enjoy the freedom of saying exactly what they think or feel. The problem with you spouting off is that you are supposed to represent us...POLICE OFFICERS. I helped put you in your position, so when you run around makng bullshit comments and sounding like a pissed off kid on the playground, you aren't representing me very well. SCC gets to make whatever comments they feel necessary because quite frankly, they have nobody to answer to. This is just a reality, like it or not. You need to wise up and use these sources to your advantage. Stop proving the point of the people that didn't vote for you by showing your immaturity. For goodness sake, you have a UNION to run.

Conceal Carry is a FOP issue. We are the biggest voice in the State and we carry a huge weight in terms of law enforcement matters. President Sheilds was elected to be our voice and the one voice. If the membership feels we should support conceal carry then he needs to do what his constituents want. By him not supporting what his membership wants in this matter it should be a wake up call to to the membership. He was elected and he can easily not be reelected in the future. Him addressing the blog is a mistake and a big one. It brings him down a level and that is not meant to hurt the blogs ego by any means. President Shields just backed himself in a corner and any smart politician should know thats never a good thing to do especially on a issue where the majority of his constituents disagree with him. The president needs to humble himself and support his membership immediately to prevent more distractions.

Over the last several months NRA has negotiated with several different law enforcement groups. The chiefs finally saw that something was likely to happen and rather be left holding the bag on what we passed, they choose to talk to have an impact on the bill.

chicago on the otherhwnd has just said no with shortshanks leading his charge at windmills.

We would enjoy having the CPD FOP lodge support. Would it make a differance, i think so. It would help.

And i would have been willing to help out if bad pension bills come out that we could effect some change on to help those who helped us.

I spoke with donahue more than once about concealed carry. He didnt like it and had planty of excuses against it.

The day that the CPD SGTs testified in favor of the bill was something to see. Right in front of the CPD brass their own guys said they didn't have a problem with it.

CPD came down twomweeks later and tried to overturn the chiefs vote in favor of the bill, trying to stack the committee with people who had not been to a meeting in over 4 years.

We were not and are not asking the President to take a lot of time out of his schedule and call all kinds of legislators or make a trip to springfield. if he wants to do like the Sgts and Lts and issues a letter/statement of support for the bill that would be more than enough, and appreciated.

If he wants to talk, i'm easy to find.

I have posted a few things on here, pending promotions, rumors, etc. Only to have someone tell me, " I heard from my guy that this or that is happening"
Please fellow officers start thinking for yourselves, take bits of information from different sources and MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION.

That's an awful broad brush that you seem to be painting with. There are immature young cops, and there are immature old cops. I have heard enough stories from old cops to know that most of them were immature young cops at one time.

That being said, I agree that Mike is immature, and he just can't figure out when to keep his mouth shut. His response was plain embarrassing.

I'm not a cop so much of this discussion is "inside baseball" to me, but I do find one thing very amusing. The criticism of SCC for being anonymous. As someone who was heavily involved in criticizing outgoing Aldercritter Helen Shiller on the internet I was tangentially the target of a subpoena her favorite developer/heavy local campaign contributor/Wilson Yard developer Peter Holsten's attorneys issued.

It was nothing less than an act of intimidation. It failed of course. The judge, by the name of Rochford, tossed it when she also essentially tossed the case. Even then the Holsten attorneys still tried to keep the subpoena going.

There are at least three valid reasons for SCC to stay anonymous. First, career repercussions to him, his family, friends or other types of city actions that might negatively affect him. You can also add in people who might not be acting in an official capacity who might be pissed off at something SCC published and seek revenge.

Second, just to annoy and piss off those you are opposing or criticizing. I imagine there are dozens if not more Chicago cops who have been "accused" of being SCC. I'd bet my middle testicle that a great deal of speculation and maybe even serious effort has gone into figuring out SCC's secret squirrel identity. Doesn't the idea of annoying the bastards just bring joy to your heart?

Third, there is a long tradition of anonymous writing in American history. From Thomas Paine and "Common Sense" to Hamilton, Madison and Jay writing as "Publius" in the "Federalist Papers". Anonymous writing is often more powerful because it keeps people more interested and guessing as to the real identity of the writer. Once the curtain is lifted the writing is perceived as being a bit less interesting and more common.

The whole IrishPirate schtick I had/have going provides much amusement. I've been in social situations where people tell me they know who "IrishPirate" is or speculate as to the real identity. They are invariably wrong. The identity of SCC must be a similar thing on a much larger and better read scale.

Really, anonymity can be an amusing and powerful tool for better spreading a message. Some may think of it as a fertilizer spreader. Others may think that after the fertilizer is spread some good things will grow because of it. There is truth in both views.

As for Mike Shields here is a suggestion I have. In reading this I'm getting a big whiff of Irish loudmouth off him. Those of us who went to Catholic Boys High Schools know what I mean. My suggestion is he just ignore SCC. He created this controversy by responding. It reminds me of some of the stuff I've seen about Trump. Anyone who criticizes him is likely to get a nasty response or silly insults hurled at him from the floppy haired wonder. Just ignore it and focus on the big stuff El Presidente Shields.

Mike Shields wants to remain neutral on the subject because he knows our new Mayors past and present position on the issue and does not want to create waves for FOP in the future on more important issues on the plate,But pointing the finger at SCC is a wrong move. SCC is a good thing and allows FOP members to vent and tell their side of the story from the street. Agreed. Let it end here.

Shields is the head of FOP and we ALL need to unite behind him.

Imho, expecting a PO to run as big an operation as the FOP alone is ludicrous. I am TOTALLY in agreement with bringing in Donahue, Camden and Farrell, ALL experts in the areas in which they were brought in to assist. The stakes are too high to simply leave it to the elected FOP Board.

In hindsight, Shields unnecessarily took aim at an SCC post. I'm guessing it won't happen again (nor should it)!

“I am content to have FOP remain neutral..."

You, sir, are not the FOP. The members are the FOP, and what you are content with, or not, reflects only your opinion. As president of the FOP, your public statements about concealed carry, or any other issue, should reflect those of the majority of the membership, and should be prefaced with "we", not "I". I suppose you couldn't come out as being outrightly against the issue, as that would have brought outright hostility from the membership. Take a survey.
Your personal attitude of nice, safe, neutrality regarding concealed carry strikes me as a self-serving attempt to avoid any negative or politically harmful fallout from the irrationally anti-gun Chicago Democratic politicians, whose future good graces you may wish to rely upon in the future. Future political aspirations maybe? Perhaps you simply fear angering people to whom may have to go with your hat in your hand as some point. This gives me serious misgivings as to what other issues you may bend over to these same politicians for in your personal interests.

Dont forget rahm is mayor now, rahms brother is a hollywood guy and dan likes to claim how many security gigs he does for so many big name hollywood types. Im hoping shields and his new crew dont use this to get rich and fuck us. I thought a young change was necessary but if this is his idea of picking fights then I hope he just stays as a water boy because he surely doesnt belong in a ring. by the way, media, politicians, big bosses LOVe when this happens, they want to split us up.

FOP hired retired Capt Farrell? The 1 thing I do know is that Farrell has done more than anyone to help coppers in trouble, both big trouble and little. As a PO there was no one better to have out on your shooting than Farrell. For whatever the reasons this is a great move.

As FOP President, it is completely unnecessary for you to address a blog at all, although be it a fine and very informative one at that with thousands of readers, much less in your FOP current updates. You should use this forum to your benefit as opposed to making an enemy of someone 99% of the membership looks to regarding anything CPD related, FOP included. First, FOP is a useless organization. It was useless in 1982 and it is more useless today. When I retired, I refused to join at their discounted rate. Why join something that does nothing.

Every FOP president and officer has been a tool of the city. The reason FOP is the union is because the Machine did not want a real union to stand up for our rights. I was there and fought against FOP tooth and nail.

This pup is just another shill for the Machine. He won because he was supposed to win.

FOP is nothing more than a fraternal group. The American Legion and VFW do more for their members than FOP does.

Damn SCC, you are one hell of a linguist. Excellent post. On the topic of cops and concealed carry, I remember when I was relatively new on the job. I thought that only cops should have the right to carry because we are trained. Then as the years went by I started changing my outlook and realized that we are all citizens, and all law abiding citizens have a right to protect themselves from the predators among us. Now that I'm retired I believe this even more strongly and would like to remind the cops who think that only they should be allowed to carry, that one day they too will just be a "lowly citizen". Armed law abiding citizens are not the problem. The thugs who already carry firearms are the problem.

What's the worst that could happen in negotiations with the City? a 0% a year raise as opposed to 1% a year? $720 dollars? Big deal; it's 35 cents each day of the year or $2.77 each day you work. Know way? You're an actual detective?

If that's the case, then I no you can do better with the English language.

I don't see how you could even begin to confuse the two words.

What really burns me about all this is how SCC had the courtesy to allow people to express their support for Mike Shields. Talk about free advertising politicians would pay out the A$$ for. Then to turn around and act like he hasn't benefited from this blog, that's pretty low.

I voted for this man. In the back of my mind something told me when he was making a lot of noise about Humberman getting a pension that this guy has a big ego and is all about himself. My intuition was right. Next time you won't get my vote Mike. In my district on our watch, 16 people voted for Mike Shields. Already 11 regret it. Mike spend your time making our job better. It's not about you it's about us.

All this shows what a self promoting, entitled, ill will to our fellow, envious, bitter group of people have to be dealt with. That is why we'll never be united and we're at the mercy of the city. This will never change. There are does who are level headed and those that are an ignorant intolerant group and usually the ones that somehow come to the attention of the general populace. Thus our image with the citizenry.

Just a daggone shame

Unlike Donahue, Shields acknowledges the existence of SCC and might even scan the blog as time permits.

To quote our former "fearless leader" J-Fled:

"KNOCK IT OFF!"

We don't need this shit.

Sorry NorthSide. He or his staff should be scanning it daily. Sounds like he's too good for us basement people.

My personal opinions are the following: I am against concealed carry. Yes, you arm the sheep but you also arm the wolves. Which is why I believe the fop should be against it. Shields challenged "whoever" to a debate. I didnt vote for shields, but I think he has some good ideas. There are many good ideas written here. Why can't we build bridges here and have a stronger department/union/city.

I didn't get your name. If you're capable of having a civil and rational exchange of ideas, drop me a line:

CPDfop7@yahoo.com

Otherwise, YOU shut the fuck up, punk!
