Police Shooting North

  • One person was wounded this morning in a police-involved shooting on the Northwest Side in the city's Hermosa neighborhood.

According to a preliminary report released by the police department Office of News Affairs, Grand Central Gang Enforcement Unit officers were working in the area of Keeler and Armitage avenues about 1:15 a.m. when they saw a male individual point a handgun from a vehicle in the direction of another group of people.

The individual drove off but was later stopped on the 2000 block of North Kostner Avenue, police said. The suspect then exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at the officers, police said.

The suspect fled the scene and the officers chased him on foot into a yard. Soon after, the suspect again pointed a weapon at the officers, police said. Officers then opened fire, striking the suspect. A weapon was recovered from the scene, police said.

Stay safe boys and girls.

Hermosa? I remember when we knew our neighborhood simply as "St. Philomenas". A middle class Austrian hamlet that was home to a Gemini astronaut, Schwinn Bicycles, a church pastor who was a real, live, cousin of Lou Gerhig, and where all of my frinds had two parents living at home. Hermosa? Gee, times have changed.

Pension info:

Delegates' intentions

Kinney and Green talked about the intentions behind the clause during floor debate, Madiar wrote.

“Benefits not being diminished really refers to this situation: If a police officer accepted employment under a provision where he was entitled to retire at two-thirds of his salary after 20 years of service, that could not be subsequently changed to say he was entitled to one-third of his salary after 30 years of service, or perhaps entitled to nothing,” Kinney said.

“[I]f you mandate the public employees in the state of Illinois to put in their 5 percent or 8 percent or whatever it may be monthly, and you say when you employ these people, ‘Now if you do this, when you reach 65, you will receive $287 a month,’ that is in fact what you will get,” Green said.

I worked in 025 the night of the shooting. First of all, I would like to say the officer did a good job of shooting the offender. Second of all (and this applies to a lot of police officers), usually when a p.o. gets into a foot chase he doesn't know where he is at! Now that is pretty stupid and incompetent.

I have heard foot chases in 025, 015, and other districts I worked in and usually (about 75% of the time) the officer can't say over the air WHERE HE IS AT AND WHERE HE IS GOING.

Now the sad part is that learning all of the different streets and each specific beat map with precise details isn't that hard. All you have to do us study the district map and each individual beat map for about 20 minutes a day for four to six weeks.

I am not criticizing anyone specifically and please don't take what I am saying the wrong way.

off topic but a few good things today happened down in springfield... first a chicago casino and slots at the airports have been approved!!!!! A chicago casino would leave the city helpless when it comes to negotiating our contracts... they can no longer cry broke. proceeds from a casino are a HUGE part of our contract talks when it comes to pay... Second, the pension changes have failed and were dropped by state lawmakers today leaving three tier pension system in the dust.... so a few good bits of news. If this chicago casino works out it could mean a ton of money for the city and possibly the city will get out of debt finally... a great thing for all of us city workers. more money equals more pay, more funded pensions and more money to hire officers and buy equipment.

The thanks you get for doing good work is a dump to A/2 while the bosses and there kids get taken care of. I don't mind pushing a beat car but the current list of exempts running patrol division makes it a hard place to work, starting at the top with DTEB.

I remember it as Hermosa Park. Maybe because I'm not Catholic. The shooting happened right around the corner from Radioland Liquors, now a currency exchange.

When will these dopes learn that trying to get away from us by either pointing or shooting a gun at us just has a bad conclusion for them? They might injure or do worse to one of us but the outcome is always worse for them. Jail or dead.

Never except an award from this department. It is an issue that comes up in every civil suit for a police shooting. Besides, it is embarrassing to wear awards given by this department. It puts you in the same company as the political hacks who run this shit hole and wear the same.

Wow, that is the problem with you old timers! listen asswipe! this post is about a shooting! Officer involved shooting! This is concerning officer saftey, not about uniform standards. At this moment who gives a rat's butt about unifom standards. If you are so gung ho about the uniforms, next time you see a "young brylcreme kid" with his hat on the wrong way, have some balls and say something. Most of you old timers are the ones to blame. You never taught the young kids anything. Even worse, your demeanor does not dictate that you can be seen as a person of respect. New Officers need mentors, and very few of you have stepped up to the plate. Your that guy who the only thing you have on this dept is time, I have 20 years , I have 25 years blah, blah. You failed to mention that you have done nothing in that time frame. In my short eight years on this Job I have met some of the best old timers I could ever work with, and most important I learned a lot from them. These guys had no problem telling you that you were wrong, had no problem pointing out to bosses that thing could be done in another manner. And these guys were not Sgt. Simply PO's with some time that were respected because of their leadership and demeanor. "Brylcreme"? seriously? do you take that with geritol and viagra before your hot date? Some of these kids don't even know what brylcreme is..... BTW, Good Job officers. Don't listen to these negative idiots. Go home in one piece, Semper Fi.

Gee, I don't know why anyone would take the accusation of being "stupid and incompetent" personally, especially after being in a traumatic situation (sarcasm). The fact that you say that people should study beat maps as a way to prevent this from happening and that you've "heard" alot of foot chases makes me think you spend alot of time on the desk. Officers in a foot chase are focused on keeping their eyes on the subject so they stay alive, descriptions and locations are very important but secondary at the moment that someone could end your life in the next few milliseconds. Giving your location out as the priority and perhaps letting your focus drift away from your subject for a few milliseconds will possibly only make it quicker for responding units to find their dead body. These guys are in GEU, they have to know multiple districts, its dark out, they have an adrenalin rush and running after somebody and ariculating where you are isn't as easy as running your finger across a beat map during a quiet moment. I'm sure the responding units heard at least one location given during the chase so you go to the area and listen and watch and search. So again, you have a point but you are coming across as a know it all, Officer Perfect.

Amen.

There is a reason US special forces are super demanding about the uniform. It is because they are the best and they demand attention to detail. It is because this attention to every detail ensures that no mission is started or performed in a half ass manner. It is because nothing is taken for granted. It is because they always strive for perfection.

It also separates them from other entities that do not demand attention to detail. Entities like the ultra disgraceful, terminally dysfunctional, more likely to fail than succeed Chicago Police Department.

Probably the only big city police department in the world that cannot handle the basics of crowd control. Blame the mopes all you want, they have been causing trouble in this city for the past 75 years. The difference was the old CPD was more in line with military standards and could handle these challeges. The first option for the new CPD is to surrender the areas they are sworn to protect.

If a recruit wore their hat backwards in 1960, they would not have left the station without a punch to their face. But, of course back then CPD still had some pride in their profession. Looking like a tattooed hip thug was not on their list of things to do.

Gangbangers wear their hats tilted or backwards. Are you the police or one of those shitheads? It's very similar to 10 of you gathering at the same spot for half an hour or more, visiting with your co-workers, it looks bad to those that observe it. Some of those that observe it actually pay some taxes and might even support us, until they see us with our hat turned around, sleeping in the car on midnights in plain view of everyone, lollygagging at the coffee spot for hours on end, cussing too loud and in general, just looking and acting badly. Look, this isn't Kennilworth where we make a fraction of what the residents make, this is Chicago and we get paid a bit more than most of the people who rely on us. I'm just saying we should appear to be worth it to them.

Look, we're the police and all eyes are on us, we should try to comport ourselves in a professional manner. How can we get help on our pensions, benefits and pay when the taxpayers see us as arrogant, lazy good for nothings? It's not only the thugs that watch where we go, what we do and how we do it, some of the people looking at us are real people.

Other than saying they were "West on McLean" (they were going East in the alley North of McLean) they did a fine job under THAT kind of pressure...a pressure Im most certain YOU have never felt. In addition they are GEU officers and work in not one but 5 districts and sometimes all over the city. Little hard to know EVERY spot.

The Rahmulator is a jag*ff. He was on the news tonight saying how good the casino would be good for Chicago and the money could be used to improve the failing infrastructure. F*ck You Rahm. If, and that's a big if, the casino gets off the ground it should be used to restore all city pension funds. After the funds are paid off it should be used for giving the residents of Chicago a reduction in their real estate taxes. In every other f*cking city in this country you can follow the graph that shows declining real estate prices over the past 5 years. If you look at the graph showing the decline in real estate taxes it mirrors or parallels the declining real estate prices graph. Not in Chicago. The real estate prices keep declining and the real estate taxes keep going up. Rest of the country graph (where one line represents home values and the other line represents real estate taxes) ===========, Chicago XXXXXXXX, get the picture? We are done paying for the Daley’s mismanagement. He has given investment opportunities to every undeserving assh*le related to him and his family and they lost a ton of our money. F*ck you Dick. Every city employee should be enjoined in a class action lawsuit against the city of Chicago and get a judgment against any profits that are generated by the casino until our pension funds are restored to 100% funded. Then an actuary should make a recommendation as to how much the city needs to pay in the future to keep the fund 100% funded. Get this straight, that’s our f*cking money and part of our compensation that you offered and we agreed to when we accepted employment with the city of Chicago. The only difference is we agreed to accept this compensation when we decided we had enough of this shit h*le
F*ck the infrastructure.

Whistleblower on a good day!
