Uh...What Now?

  • The new chief of Chicago Public Schools wants teachers to visit students at home, even in violent neighborhoods.

WLS-TV in Chicago reports that Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard said at a Thursday news conference that "our students go there every day. Why can't we?" Mayor Rahm Emanuel also was at the news conference.

Brizard says teachers and staff should each be assigned about ten home visits to students each year. Chicago public schools have about 430,000 students.
Is this guy truly that much of a dumbass?

First up, the teachers aren't going to do this for free. Their time is worth money, perhaps not as much as they think it is, but it's certainly worth something. Many teachers don't live in the neighborhoods they teach in, but you want them to burn extra gas on their days off to "home visit" certain students? If we recall correctly, your School Board just voted to disregard contractually negotiated raises while jacking up executive compensation. You're also wanting them to work longer school days this coming year. Anyone else see the danger ahead?

Second, how can we put this politely Jean-Claude? There are certain neighborhoods where some of these teachers are going to stick out like a sore thumb. And if they stick out, they are going to get hurt. Some might even get hurt badly. There are neighborhoods in Chicago where we wouldn't even think of wandering without a gun, a partner and a radio. And you expect teachers to just show up there on their own time? Are you insane?

Home visits and the like are no substitute for poor parenting and outright neglect. It's almost like this asshat and the mayor are deliberately provoking the teachers into a job action. Even old man Daley wasn't that dumb. Teachers aren't like auto workers, truckers, dockworkers or any other union members. Teachers are sympathetic strikers and they end up affecting large voting blocs.

CPS is such a joke. I am Cpd. My mom taught at various CPS schools for 34 years. To this day, she has students visit her, take her out to lunch, and call her. All of them tell her what an impact she has made on their lives. She retired in the early 2000's, when students started throwing things at her during class, calling her names and swearing at her. No disciplinary action was ever taken toward any of these little shits. One day, a basketball player failing out of her English class told her that she should go work at mcdonalds, where she belongs. My mother has two advanced degrees and has done the right thing in every way for her entire life.
She walked away after that school year and never looked back.
Home visits for a person like her, who loved teaching, would have made her excited because she loved her students and her craft.
I can just see today's typical CPS student setting her up to be carjacked in the worst of circumstance and have the door slammed in her face in the best. No thanks. Our teachers deserve much, much better.

Maybe the city should assign six CPD Officers and a CPD vehicle to accompany each teacher when these visits are made.

If it's good for the Ald. Burke it's good for our teachers.

It's done at those stupid UNO schools who are given every chance to succeed and given newly constructed schools paid for by taxpayers money and run by for profit companies. they hire scab teachers who can't find real teaching jobs and are desperate enough and dumb enough to work there. they are fired if they report criminal activity by students. CPS gives big money in hopes these charter schools exceed in order to bust the union which is their longterm goal. However UNO and other charter schools have high teacher turnover and sh!t test scores despite being given less kids per class. They want real CPS teachers to follow their lead hmmm let's see.... At 35 kids per class twice a year=70 visits in In 270 school days. Do they really hate the profession that much? Plus add a longer school day to that.

I have no trouble teaching during the CPS mandated PD time. Of course, does this mean all the crony consultants won't get a pay day. I do have an issue giving up teacher directed time on institute days because those are often the only time we can meet to plan or clean. Also, do something about the multi million dollar grade book system the CPS implemented -- IMPACT. Not user friendly, slow and clunky. Also, final grades for high school students were due on 6/9 -- Of course, school ended on 6/17. Thus, attendance took a dive for those last days. Ridiculous and a waste of instructional time. I'll also do home visits, so long as the district promises two things (1) safety, as there's no way I'm traversing some parts of North Lawndale without security and (2) coverage of CPS insurance when off school grounds. While were at it, how about building time into the day for PE for all students, more than a 25 minute lunch, and a resource period for students. Oh yeah, demanding more from teachers when you eliminated teacher raises while giving yourself more money than your predecessors seems like a silly thing to do, Brizzard.

When I was growing up, if I needed a teacher's help I either went to school BEFORE class started, or stayed AFTER class ended. And magically, it always worked and if I put in the extra time so would a teacher. I can't imagine it's any different these days. Why the hell would we want to cater to these kids anymore than we already do by making the teachers come to then? This is obnoxious.

The officers working Operation Protect Youth, which is a joke anyway, are being ordered to follow 5 food trucks all day long to the ghetto to watch them hand out free lunches. That's 5 two man cars and a Sergeant down for 8 hours a day five days a week for the whole summer to be private security for a program initiated by Michelle Obama and her friends. My guess is it is costing taxpayers $25000 a week Couldn't these officers be used for something better? Especially if we are so short on the street.

Besides, the teachers can carry, because.....those liberals will not let us have conceal carry. Gee, have the parents come to a parent teacher conference, no? Take attendance and then show the school chief and Rahm the results and then have THEM go to those "homes" and seek out the missing parents.

It does not take a village to raise a child........it takes a parent that cares.........it takes parents to have an interest to their children's success! The more I try to listen to these CPS people and the mayors...the more I am glad I sent of son to a Catholic school and those years! Regarding Brizard, SCC asks, "Is this guy truly that much of a dumbass?"

Not in the least. In fact, quite the opposite. He clearly is playing the role that Emanuel hired him to play: savage attack-dog, teacher antagonizer and union buster.

Emanuel, in his quest to win the White House in 2016, is obviously attempting to tap into voter anger with public-sector unions, bitch-slap Chicago's unions into submission (starting with the CTU but eventually expanding to FOP and others), and make himself look like a strong leader who's tight with a tax dollar and who won't take crap from govt employees. And the teachers and the coppers and the firefighters and the laborers are his whipping boys.

Especially my favorite, Phelonius A. Salt. His sister Aggie was a piece of work, too.

Since our new Mr. Mayor was not endorsed by any of the cities' unions and won handsomely without our support, he will attempt to shit on each and every one of us. Those without pensions and health insurance elected this asshat( love that word, Second City Cop) and Penny Pritzker and other billionaires provided him with ALL the financial support he'll need for the rest of eternity. Billionaires, in turn, get to control public policy through their tax dodging Not-For-Profits such as Penny's "The Fund." The mayor's actions are all about UNION BUSTING and PRIVATIZATION OF EDUCATION so that Rahm's pals can make even more money. It's immoral to use kids in this way, but these narcissistic egomaniacs will stop at nothing to feed their insatiable greed.Brizzard got $30,000 for moving expenses-check his contract-are you kidding?? and left behind a lawsuit. The teachers in Rochester are dancing a dance of joy to get rid of this disrepectful piece of shit who kisses the filthy rich ass of Ely Broad and his Broad Foundation School for Superintendents. Several states are now teaching Creationism in place of Evolution -this is only the beginning of a corporate takeover of education including what is taught in Public, yes, PUBLIC Schools.

What a nut job. I actually met him--he observed me teaching. The emperor is , indeed, butt naked in the room. We are entrenched in yet another initiative designed to improve minority test scores and narrow the achievement gap...any yet, research shows that this gap is fully in place by 3rd grade. Not much we do in high school can raise those scores. Birth through age 5 is critical. And home visits?? If we were honest, we would acknowledge that the lowest performing kids need to be pulled from the home and educated in a residential setting. Old-school orphanage style. We already feed them breakfast and lunch, provide bus cards, provide free dental and eyeglasses, and in some cases, free medical at in-school clinics. High percentage have LINK. Complete institutionalization is the next step, and probably the only logical solution. In 25 years, mothers need only give birth-the state will take care of the rest.
