All That Tax Money....Gone!

  • Illinois' 10th casino opened in Des Plaines today after years of legal and regulatory fights over its gambling license -- and the result was so successful that casino operators would like people to stay away ... at least for now.
  • The traffic jam earlier had local police warning people to steer clear of the area if they can.

Police said traffic was at a standstill from drivers heading to the casino, with the area near River Road and Devon Avenue jammed up, especially southbound on River from Howard Street, which is north of Touhy Avenue, police said. They expected the situation to continue tonight.

Of course, the newness will wear off in a bit, but being so close to Chicago will continue to bring in people from the northern suburbs too nervous to go to Gary, Indiana and who wouldn't come into Chicago lately.

Come to think of it, Rahm is probably cursing Quinn right about now, too.

Who the Hell would want to come into this cesspool to gamble. I wouldn't. Go to Des Plaines. Safe and nice. Chicago would never see any money from a casino. All the connected arceholes would suck up all the profits and that would be that.

A LONG time ago, my idea was to turn Navy Pier into a casino. It would have been a great idea because most of the infrastructure was already there. Parking, access, and it was in a spectacular place - views of the lake, views of downtown, AND access ON the lake.

It was a good place for a casino because if you put 500-1,000 boat slips around it, you also could have gotten all the high-rollers coming in on their yachts to play a couple of hours from all the other harbors on Lake Michigan (Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan).

Nobody wanted gambling in Chicago. How stupid. They opened up gambling casinos in Indiana and the dog tracks in Wisconsin. We lost a LOT of money because of the shortsightedness of those in charge.

Now they are scrambling to figure out what to do as revenues and the tax base are eroding.

So now they want a casino. A little late now.

If you build it, they will come!

A downtown casino would pack them in 24/7/365.

Goofy Daley could have had a casino license over ten years ago and avoided the mess we are now left with.

And this silly prick wants bodyguards?

They'll go there over Chicago anyway. Chicago will charge more for bottled water, drinks, food. They'll probably even try to charge admission because that's what democrats do.

Ah! Another one of the Daley Legacies. Pass up a sure thing. I guess Shortshanks wasn't just short in height. He was also short sighted.

No wonder Chicago is called the Second City. For the past 2 decades we've had a Mayor who never had one original thought.

Good luck Rahm. Your first term will be nothing but damage control.

I read that Desiree Rogers is an investor in the Des Plaines casino.

She must have gotten lucky and just happened to get a piece of the action with the guaranteed profit. Yeah, that's probably just what happened. Luck, Chicago style.

Poor rhambo, the only source of revenue he can hope for is from a casino that even if approved wouldn't open for at least 4 Yeats.

Anything that gets Rahm pissed of is probably a good thing for the rest of us. I feel Rahm is going to make us all misty eyed at the thought of the good old days with Dick Daley.

I thought a lot of people today were broke. We are in a recession, people are unemployed, can't find jobs, losing their homes, complaining of high cost of gas, tax's etc, yet a new casino is jammed with people willing to lose their money to the mob ( city & state officials included) then save some money for a rainy day. What's wrong with this picture?

DesPlaines P.D. dropped ball big tine. Trying to get to other side of Ohare around 1pm, forgot about the Casino opening, got stuck at River Rd. and Devon. No Police present at the corner, unbeieveable! Was able to go South away from the Casino into Rosemont, every corner had a police directing traffic. They might be a mobbed up twon but they took care of business.

daly has practiced self abuse for so long that he needs a seeing eye dog. That may be why he has all the police valets. He's scared of dogs.

I believe they are also setting up a free shuttle from O'Hare so all those stranded passengers will have someplace to go and not have to shell out tons of money for poorly made coffee from Maggie Daley & freinds concessions

I thought that's why shorty destroyed Meiggs Field. Make way for a casino, or a hugh bird bath.

Did anyone else catch that photo in the Trib oron TV of NYC Mayor Bloomberg, Rahm and Shorty together last week at the Art Institute.

Just look at their smiles. These three crooks have truly raised public corruption to fine art.

Daley always passed on a casino because he knew he couldn't control the graft and corruption involved; it would have eventually led to his desk with indictments.

Just returned from the River Casino in Desplaines. It is right at Devon and River Road. Nice parking structure (free) easy access. But, it is already too small. People are climbing all over each other. The aisles are very narrow and it is rather confusing with few clear walkways. But, anyway, in this recession I saw people of all stripes and types putting their money down.
Chicago is so lame.

If DesPlaines was smart, they would now secede from Crook County. That way all their revenue won't be taken and used up - wasted on the shit skins by the Democommiecrat Party of Crook County. .

I went to the Rivers Casino today. The venue is pretty nice, although it should have been bigger with more slot machines. Yesterday trying to get out there was insane, so I delayed visiting. The burgers at FlipT were very good, though a little pricey. The only slot machine I won on was the Goldfish one.

All in all it was a good time, although I didn't walk out with a fortune or hole in my pocket.
