"Heat," Bacteria, Fog?

  • All but one of Chicago's beaches were under swim bans today after lifeguards determined they could not keep swimmers safe because fog was limiting visibility.

The bans were posted just before noon and will be lifted when the fog burns off, according to Jessica Maxey-Faulkner, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District. Check the district's online beach report for updates.

At first, the Park District said only North Avenue and Oak Street beaches were closed because of fog. But at about 2:25 p.m., the ban was extended to all city beaches. As of about 6 p.m., all the beaches had swim bans except for the 12th Street Beach.
Reports from one of the beaches tell of a sulfurous stench, not unlike that associated with satanic worship, which would actually explain quite a bit of Rahm's deal making abilities.

I rode my bike past 12th street beach today and it was very foggy. You couldn't see out into the water more than 20ft. Why was this beach considered safe for swimming? Maybe it's because it is tiny and not very popular with certain demographics.

There must be a strange micro climate at North Avenue and Oak Street beaches that make these strange things occur.

It only gets hot there and fog just rolls in at those two locations first before spreading out to the other beaches.

Now come drink your RahmAid. It's good for you.

The city hired these big huge fog machines from Rahm's brother's Hollywood connect to keep everyone off the beach.

Each lifeguard makes the call at his or her own beach. If the lifeguard felt they could observe
the swimmers, they left it open.

I really don't think Skilling doctored the radar and satellite photos just to upset you. It's Chicago. Weather happens. If you look at the overheads, it's easy to see the southern end of the lake is the last place the fog dissipated. That would be our beaches.

I picture RAHMFATHER in a Dr Evil chair sitting on top of city hall in his secret lair, with his stumpy finger flipping the switch to make it foggy. And the supe laughing and giggling at his every move. And little Tom Byrne trying to be his mini me so he can get another city job.

This excuse actually seemed legit. I was running along the lakefront path and the fog would have made it difficult for lifeguards to ensure the safety of anyone in the water. Memorial Day? Well, that was another story...total BS.

I was working lakefront, it was legit, you couldn't see shit. Fog rolled in around 9:30 10:00. also beaches had very few people on them when this happened, so the didnt close them because of crowds this time. Lifegfuards made the call.

In this case, I agree the fog was a major safety issue.

I walked over to the Ohio Street beach around 2, at my condo on McClurg at Grand, it was sunny & warm. By the time my dog & I were at the beach, which is maybe 600 yards east of me, it was so foggy I could only see clearly for about 50 feet. Standing on the boardwalk at the back of the beach, I couldn't see the water. So this restriction I understand - had Park District not made the decision to officially close water access, and some kid drowned bc a lifeguard couldn't see anything, you can bet that there would have been some serious litigation about Park Dist "allowing" kids in the water in unsafe conditions.

Also, unlike Memorial Day, the beaches weren't closed, just access to water prohibited. So anybody who wanted to build sandcastles or whatever was free to do so.

A nice side effect, it must have been 20 degrees cooler in the fog.
