Hot, HOT, HOT!!!

  • The longest stretch of uninterrupted heat so far this summer is set to smother the city, beginning Sunday.

    Expect about a week of sizzling temperatures, mostly in the lower to mid-90s, according to the National Weather Service. And don’t expect much of a respite at night, when the lows are predicted to fall only into the upper 70s.

    And with the heat index (the mix of heat and humidity) expected to top 100 degrees next week, it’s a good idea to take the usual precautions: Drink lots of fluids; stay out of the sun; avoid excessive exertion.

Also, avoid the beaches - they might have to be closed for "heat" reasons.

We're surprised we haven't heard any comparisons to the 1995 heat wave that killed hundreds. Multiple days of ninety-plus degrees, little air movement, no cooling at night while the heat builds and builds. We'd certainly expect a spike in violence at the very least.

Holy shit, some people in the media act as if it never gets "hot" in Chicago. Next thing you know, they are going to scream to the high heaven in Jan, when it snows...

Some of you need to act like you're actually FROM Chicago.

East parking lot, 1300 hrs July 1995, push ups with PO Terow on a regular basis. I don't recall ever being more miserable doing exercise than during that damn heat wave. Terow would exercise with you and he wore sweats! I got madder than hell but couldn't stay mad because he did it with us. He was brutal with his endurance.

I was sorry he passed just a few years later. He was a tireless gentleman. May God Bless him and his.

Grievance, CR and lawsuit. Medical information is confidential, by department policy, general order and federal law. To say nothing of this supervisor's behavior being just plain unprofessional.

While I don't condone what that Capt. is alleged to have done in the 023rd District, it's no secret that there's no shortage of medical roll abusers there in that District, BIG TIME! I'm sure he was just venting his frustrations at the high numbers of people there riding the medical rolls, as they have for quite a while over there.

There are several reasons why the press is not offering comparisons to 1995. First, many members of the press weren't working here 16 years ago, or they were still children. Second, it's human nature to forget our own history (and thus be doomed to repeat it). Third, it's easier for the understaffed TV news orgs (they've had waves of layoffs, too) to just throw up stock footage of sunbathers at a beach than to understand and report on the lessons of 1995 and focus on the people really at risk (elderly people who live alone). Fourth and finally, the Daley/Emanuel Administration long ago stopped reminding people of the lessons learned from 1995, because they viewed the 700-plus deaths as a political embarassment.

How many homicides occurred between July 13-20, 1995? Can everyone look up the stats for shootings, stabbings and other violence during that time period. I suspect that there was little violence during that period because it was too hot.

On the other hand, the morgue was packed to overflowing (and corpses stored in a refrigerator truck parked outside) with the hundreds of people who had died due to the weather conditions.

The media are doing the right thing by warning people and encouraging them to take precautions. History doesn't have to repeat itself.

I am kind of militant about those medical slips being kept in a folder, in a drawer, instead of on a two hole clipboard on the wall for anyone to see. ALWAYS thought it was wrong.

Your reasons for being on the medical, whether it's a miscarriage or multiple sclerosis, is YOUR business and NO ONE ELSE's.

Time for a change. And I DO think using a Federal law (HIPAA) is the way to finally MAKE it change.

Here's a little of the pertinent verbiage:
"Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will take effect on April 14, 2003...HIPAA requires, among other things, that you safeguard patients’ individually identifiable information (also referred to as protected health information or PHI) by restricting access to it and seeking patient permission to disclose it in certain circumstances"

I have at least 4 friends in the last 3 days that have been victimized--not one cop would take a report. Attacked in Lakeview (3 people), followed home by knife-wielding maniac in Edgewater (1 person). And that's just my friends. They heard everything like "We're from 19th not 23rd, so we can't make a report." or "Well, at least you're OK." and to someone in the ER, again, "Clark street is the dividing line so I can't take a report." Some of these people were badly injured. It may be standard operating procedure, but if SCC can't BELIEVE the numbers are down, start taking some freakin reports.

On the 023 WC, he probably violated some department policy, but HIPAA does not apply to us:

"As required by Congress in HIPAA, the Privacy Rule covers:

* Health plans
* Health care clearinghouses
* Health care providers who conduct certain financial and administrative transactions electronically. These electronic transactions are those for which standards have been adopted by the Secretary under HIPAA, such as electronic billing and fund transfers.

These entities (collectively called “covered entities”) are bound by the privacy standards even if they contract with others (called “business associates”) to perform some of their essential functions. The law does not give the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the authority to regulate other types of private businesses or public agencies through this regulation. For example, HHS does not have the authority to regulate employers, life insurance companies, or public agencies that deliver social security or welfare benefits."

Telling the desk officer that one has hemmoroids or is having a penile implant to cure erectile dysfunction or some other embarrassing condition is not necessary and would prevent outbursts like the one described above

He is an arrogant, self-promoting, power-hungry and, worst of all, VINDICTIVE jerk.

In one ear and out the other, you say??! Well, not if he decides to punish you just because he doesn't like you!

How would you like it if you HAD to go on the medical, or if you HAD to take SIF, and when you returned to work, you were taken of your car and separated from your partners? How would you like it if you were written up for even the most minor of less-serious transgressions??

That's right, ASSHOLE; THAT w/c isn't in your face for ranting for just 10 mins out of your tour. Capt. TL IS is in your face until he runs you off the watch or gets you to transfer out.

And speaking of rollcalls, when was the last time you had to endure a rollcall that lasted 40 mins and was about how badly you and your fellow officers are doing? Huh, ASSHOLE?
