Officers Needed at Court

Closing arguments today at 26 & California Room 203 at 0930 hours:
  • Two years ago two of my teammates, Scott McKena and Danny O'Toole were shot while executing a Search Warrant in the 5th District. Kenneth Green, the offender who shot both of my teammates has been in court all week with all of his family and with many of his "friends". Many of these same "friends" also belong to a certain south side "organization" (gang) that Green belongs to. These same "friends" spent one day at the trial "mean muggin" and uttering things under their breath about the lone civilian witness who came forward to help the police in this case. It took a lot for this witness to show up knowing that this particular organization is all around the witness' business and that they now know who he is. Most of us know how being a 'snitch" in the ghetto goes over with these organizations.
Sadly, the offender has had more outside support than my two teammates. Outside of two of our teammates who were allowed to sit in on the trial and one officer's wife, there have only been maybe one or two P/O's stop in during the trial. Again, I am not, and do not, intend to even hint at blaming ANYONE. For whatever reason P/O's just have not known, or were just not able to stop in for a minute. I am asking if you could please post the information about the closing arguments that are set to begin tomorrow at 0930. We all remain hopeful that a swift verdict will come back from the Jury shortly after the closing arguments. There has been great support from all of the ASA's involved who believe that we have a very good jury and who know we have an excellent case. We just need a little bit more of a show of force from the Thin Blue Line.
Check in at your room with the State and tell them you'll be right back. Stop by Room 203. It takes a minute and could make all the difference.

It's not your fault but this is something that should of been posted earlier in the week. And the FOP should be posting these things on a regular basis so that it is known so people show up to lend thier support.

Great post and I had no idea this was going on. Sad but there should be a FOP post about these cases. Thank you for the rude awakening and I will stop by between cases. Of couree we should always be there for our brothers but after this officer wrote this he reminded me that we should also show support for the witness who came forth on the officers behalf. We run the streets, not the thugs.

We keep hearing stories like this over and over, which is quite sad and demoralizing.

I agree with the original poster that the biggest problem here is the failure to "effectively" and "consistently" get the word out to EVERYONE on cases like this.

Once and for all, we need to develop a system that specifically addresses this issue. We can no longer continue to allow anyone to be "left behind on the battlefield."

It is my personal opinion that Department Administration should take responsibility to ensure the "broadcast notification" of such cases to everyone from a centralized "transmission point." The AMFN message center comes to mind as an effective tool in getting the word out.

Until Department Administration effectively takes the lead on this, through established policy and protocol, I encourage all Captains and Lieutenants to personally send out a Department-Wide AMFN message, providing timely information on cases such as these, concerning members within their commands.

I think we can all agree this is the right thing to do.

Once the "message is sent", it becomes the duty of each and every one of us to "amplify the message" within our own units, watches, and teams.

Again, my personal opinion is that all available resources should be used to "pump up the volume." These include the FOP and PB-PA websites, social media - such as Facebook and Twitter, and of course our "unofficial" central information resource - SCC.

This type of disconnect has gone on far too long and can no longer be tolerated or accepted. My thanks to SCC for continuing to focus attention and information on this problem.

Please... everyone... Do what you can, where you are at, with what you have.

I am RDO today with a number of pre-scheduled morning appointments. I was unaware of this case, prior to reading it on the blog last night. I will make every effort to stop in court today to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with others on the blue team.

In addition to my suggestion above... if anyone has information (now or in the future) on cases like this... kindly send me an email through CPD.

Work safe!

John Andrews

It said that they were not looking to blame anyone. I was one of the ones who stopped in the other day because I worked with one of the guys on that team. The whole team except for two, were not allowed in because they were all part of the trial. They will all be there today at the closing arguments. Hope you can make it too.

Stay Safe!

As a reminder to all:

Whenever there is a case such as this, call the FOP. Have them put something on the website, in the newsletter or in a flyer to all units in the Dept.

It is in these trying times that we most need to support each other.

God Bless the CPD and the CFD.

Uh... Well obviously we are testifying and couldn't sit in on trial. That's were their teammates are, in the jury box in 204.

If you read the post you would see that the teammates that are allowed to be in the audience are there. The others are probably testifying and therefore are not allowed to watch the trial. You can be sure these guys have each others' backs.

To the poster who asked where are the other officers from the unit? The answer is, Officer's O'toole and McKenna work in Unit 189 also known as Narcotics. Would you like all the UCO's to sit in the gallery with masks on? More importantly I didn't even know this trial was going until reading SCC this morning.

Supt Mcthirsty doesn't let us breathe let alone have time to support our fellow PO's anyway.

Gee, where or where are our elected officals? I mean, it's not like Ald. Beale's office is located DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET from where the incident took place. Why would the POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSIONER be there to support Police Officers who were going above and beyond trying to help clean up the drug dealers and gang bangers in HIS WARD. I guess the good Alderman couldn't do the "maff" and count down 1 number from his office and put 2 & 2 together. Or maybe, just maybe, our fine Alderman is just part of the problem within that community and enjoys the perks of the "no snitch" game. Maybe someone should just "axe hims why he donts shows up"? Inquiring minds want to know!

AGAIN, We arent told of these things until after the fact. Why doesnt FOP make us aware of these court dates or why doesnt the department have the sack to at the very least send a 2nd watch officer from every district in this city. I can barely remember the court dates i get notified for, its impossible to know these court dates when we arent informed of whats going on

To the first poster, obviously you have never been on a tact team. Everyone on the team goes on the warrant. Therefore they are all potentially going to testify and therefore cannot sit in the audience and follow the trial. Since it is a jury trial they can't wait in the jury room. They are awaiting instruction in the other big building at 26th street, the one on the left. Duh

Things like this need to be posted more often and there should be a sign when you check in to let all officers know to go to the rm for support. There is never any notice for these kinds of cases and I think it needs to be mentioned and posted more frequently.

Obviously you have not testified at trial, or you would know that the teammates were likely witnesses, and were barred by the court from being in the room while other witnesses were testifying.
The team, and many others, including at least one boss, were there for closing arguments and the verdict.

Shocked!!!!!!!

A not guilty verdict on all counts!
Every officer in that courtroom was blown away. Every States Attorney was blown away. The pro- defense judge was blown away when she read the verdict.
The cop shooter admits to buying the gun off the street for 100dollars, shooting the gun numerous times, impeached himself countless times and was found not guilty. He goes free by a cook county jury. In my 19 years on this job I have never seen anything like this. He is a self admitted GD who will be free tonight. This is insanity.

SCC

We as a police department were robbed and cheated today. Our department was weakened. How does a defendant admit in court to buying a gun off the street, and shoot this same gun through a door with Crack in his room go free? Our system failed us and the two policemen he shot.
Where is Pat Camden with a statement. I've never heard of this. I am sickened that this happened.

UNREAL!

The Chicago Police Department needs to make a statement about what happened at 26th St room 203 today. The Chicago Police Department needs to ask why a convicted felon gang member who shot two police officers during a search warrant is free tonight. The Chicago Police Department needs to let every one of its members know that it won't stand idly by and let this injustice occur. The Chicago Police Department has to let every one of its members know that it has our backs and this can never ever happen again. No words can describe the outcome of this case after the evidence clearly showed Kenneth Green was guilty. The State's Attorney's office should explore jury tampering and possible threats made to the jury as these are the only possible things that could have led to a not-guilty verdict today. Please intervene SCC!

The ASAs, and POs who testified all did the great job. The evidence went is as well as it could. The ASAs were both Supervisors who took the case very seriously and prepared meticulously. The jury just blew it. I'm sick of hearing that the SAO is full of lazy Police haters. This NG is all on the jury. THey just chose to ignore the evidence presented.
