Crazy North Side (UPDATED)

  • A Northwest Side man is accused of beating his neighbor to death, injuring himself and then assaulting a police officer and a nurse following his arrest.

  • After police arrested Tyler, officers took him to Illinois Masonic Medical Center to be treated for self-inflicted injuries, authorities said.

While at the hospital, Tyler hit a female nurse with a glass shelf, leaving a wound that required 38 stitches, police said. Tyler allegedly punched one of the arresting officers in the face and tried to disarm him.

Tyler was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempting to disarm a police officer, police said.

Thank goodness it didn't. Was this a one-man-detail on a suspected murderer?

UPDATE: We completely missed this part of the article:
  • While at the hospital, Tyler hit a female nurse with a glass shelf, leaving a wound that required 38 stitches
Reported as FACT. Then this:
  • Tyler allegedly punched one of the arresting officers in the face and tried to disarm him
Really? He cut up a nurse, but "allegedly" punched and tried to disarm an officer? Anyone who thinks these isn't a built in bias against anything involving Chicago cops, then this article ought to be Exhibit A in any rebuttal.

Shackles and handcuffs work wonders.

BTW we don't work for the hospital so when a doctor or nurse tells you to take them off. JUST SAY NO! Against General orders.

All prisoners must be secured properly. Then this wouldn't happen.

I'm not the bad guy, just a beat cop who refuses to take off the cuffs. call a supervisor if you must. But this shithead was a potential homicide offender. of course he's going to try to escape. I would.

prisoner details in 016 are routinely one-man assignments. the day of the offenders arrest the dispather assigned a 99 car with a female on it to guard him and a sergeant got on the air and said a one-man car only is needed but send a male officer. last time an officer questioned a sergeant about one-man prisoner details he was punished.

Not only was there just one officer assigned to guard a suicidal murderer, it's a good example of what can occur when a house mouse is thrown back onto the street after he's been off it long enough to not keep fundamental officer safety precautions in mind. This offender was quietly testing his limits since he arrived at the hospital and finally found the soft spot he could exploit. I'm thankful the outcome wasn't more disastrous for the officer involved or any number of people around him.

There should be two officers assigned to EVERY prisoner detail, especially at a hospital where there are any number of objects within reach that could be used as a weapon against you - needles everywhere, knives and forks on meal trays, etc. No matter how routine an arrest may be to an officer doesn't mean it's routine for the offender and isn't possibly a life changing event that could prompt them to act beyond the routine. Let the backlog pile up all day and night if that's what two cars down on a prisoner detail gets you. Making due with limited manpower in this instance was nearly a catastrophic event.

If the watch commander sent one officer to secure a violent prisoner--this guy beat a man to death, not a shot from afar--then he should be demoted.

It's bad enough you might get killed by mutts on the street--you also have to worry about your bosses making bone-headed decisions and put you in harm's way.

No way should one officer be escorting an uncuffed murder suspect to the bathroom alone. That is like sending out a one-man wagon!

I've done 4 99 hospital prisoner details this year alone. Anyone working in 011 knows exactly what I'm talking about. On 3rd watch, it's routine to break up a 10-4 car, by having 1 of the partners dropped off at the hospital. While the other returns to the streets as a 99 unit. This is almost a weekly occurence here. Especially on 3rd watch.

I am sure 019 couldn't spare a copper to help guard a prisoner in their District because they have how many officers guarding the Mayor's house? And then there is the firehouse he took over near the compound too.

Way to lead the way doing more with less, Mr. Mayor. Not like we got anybody hurt or anything.

Why would anyone be 99 on a prisoner detail? Which boss sent this P.O. all by himself to a prisonder detail? This is so unsafe on so many levels.

9/17/2011 10:08:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

In 016 they purposely look for a 99 unit to assign to prisoner details. They try to keep as many 10-4 cars on the street as possible. People outside of 016 don't get it, there just is no personnel in 016. It's not uncommon to have 60-70% of the watch 99 regularly. Time due is regularly denied, and if one or 2 people call in sick, the watch is thrown into literal chaos. Cars are sent from job to job sometimes miles away from the one they just cleared from. In this specific case I wont get into why this guy couldn't piss or shit into a plastic pan, or why there was no minimus done so the county could have the killer, or why this guy was not incapacitated for attempting to murder a nurse (in my opinion). But 016 desperately needs more people, the taxpayers are disproportionatley paying more for less there.

I think it was in Georgia where a prisoner going before the Court was brought to the courtroom un-handcuffed & the Bailiff or courthouse LEO (a small woman if I recall) lost there gun to the animal and was shot.

Fucking lawyers had got it so prisoners were brought to court un-cuffed because they said it was predudicial.

Whoever made the decision to have a lone officer guard a murder suspect should be severely reprimanded. Idiot!
I also wonder if the medical staff insisted that the handcuffs be removed from the prisoner while they treated him. I've had a number of instances where we had to fight with an offender who ended up needing medical care and when we brought him in, the first thing the docs would insist upon is removal of the cuffs. Even after warning them that mayhem would ensue without the cuffs they still insisted. Of course, the fight was back on and after a few medical personnel were hurt it was now OK for the cuffs to be used. Sometimes these doctors and nurses can be a pain in the azz.

I see that his current legal troubles began July 18, when he was stopped by the ISP out in my neck of the woods.

One of the articles mentioned he was a suspect in a burglary that had taken place earlier that day not too far from my sister's house.

Considering he had already been fingered as the guy the deceased thought robbed his place, why weren't they all over him from the get go, considering his past history?

Looks like had just enough time to inflict more misery on another person.

A Prisoner Guard of ANY prisoner should be 2 P.O.'S , let alone a Homicide Offender. This is a window into the manpower shortage that the City says doesn't exist. When the addition of 1 Officer can upset the Watch balance you know we are in dire straits. The Officer should file a safety grievance immediately and the Nurse should sue the hell out of the city.

My guess is that since the anti-police bias is so ingrained in Chicago journalism, the writers put in the adverb "allegedly" unconsciously.

Wouldn't it be unusual to see that adverb applied to those predators who are reported to be honor students, about to enroll in college, and poised to turn their lives around?

George Orwell may have gotten it wrong about the future of communist dictatorships, but he sure got it right when it comes to media control over how we think. He called it Newspeak -- a language introduced and controlled by the media which fundamentally alters our collective consciousness. It's pretty fucking frightening.

Most of us have done numerous prisoner guard details as a 99 unit. It should always be a 10-4 assignment, fuck the backlog!

I must add, there but for the grace of God go I. Shit happens very quickly, there is no way to create a perfect, safe situation on every job you handle - if there was, they could eliminate the IOD reports. It's comforting to know that if something like this ever happens to me I'll have my Police Family, who weren't on the scene, sit around and second guess everything they think I did or didn't do, while I recover from my injuries. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
