Get Healthy Or Else!

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a “wellness plan” today aimed at keeping city employees healthier by charging them an extra $50 per month for insurance if they don't participate.

Workers and their spouses can participate for free and the only requirements are annual health screenings and follow-up phone calls from medical providers to point them to areas of concern, Emanuel said at a news conference with Chicago Federation of Labor President Jorge Ramirez, whose group represents major unions representing city workers.

  • Workers will not have to meet health benchmarks to stay in the program, but have to listen to recommendations about improving their health. Federation officials estimated up to 30,000 union members and spouses would participate.

“You have to try, is what this wellness plan is about. You have to make the attempt to do it,” Ramirez said. “It doesn't mean you absolutely, positively have to succeed. It means you need to try.”
So you have to sit and listen to Doctor Feelgood, promise to do better, and you're golden? What's the point?

Evidently, the FOP sees problems here, too:
  • But Bill Dougherty, first vice president for the Fraternal Order of Police, said the FOP won't participate in the health care agreement because the wellness plan isn't a good deal for union members.

“Employees shouldn't be penalized $50 (per month) for them and $50 for their spouse, just because they don't want to participate in this program,” Dougherty said.
Once you give the City an inch, they'll take a yard, then a mile if they can. Our objection would arise from having to go to city doctors for this stuff. We're already happy with our health care professionals. We don't see the need to expand that circle of people into our personal business. We know we're going to be getting a whole bunch of comments about how cops are all fatasses, SCC is a bunch of overweight do-nothings, and all sorts of other nonsense (save your typing). We don't object to wellness plans and a healthy lifestyle - we object to the city nosing into our personal business and our health care decisions.

As one commentator said earlier:
  • Not a bad idea for us public employees. This should also be used for the link card crowd.
Precisely.

Rahm demands chicago taxpayers to pay over $500,000 in salary and benefits , 2 cars for maggie and richie daley , but says taxpayers should not be required to pay health care insurance for employees that won't help them selves with a wellness plan.
doesn't make any sense to most people i talk to .

Why not for the whole city Rahm?

Penalize everyone $50 if they don't keep themselves in good health.

Think of the billions it will save the citizens of Chicago if everyone does this!

What a crock of shit. I work out regularly. My wife and I go to the gym. We have very good health reports from the doctors.

I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE GOVERNMENTAL HOOPS TO HAVE TO SATISFY IN MY LIFE!

I AM TIRED OF THESE LIBERAL-ASS DEMOCRATS REGULATING THE SHIT OUT OF MY LIFE.

Now I need another layer in my life to check on me to see if I am healthy.

The fucking nerve of these liberals!

Go "f" yourself, Mr. Mayor.

Rahm, deal with crime, emergency preparedness, street upkeep, new sewers, sanitation and a host of other basics for which I am already being taxed.

Or do you have a cousin who will be making some money off of this somewhere.

I can't wait for an opening for governor or senator to become available as I know Rahm will run for it and hopefully leave town as soon as possible.

The obvious question is always who gets the connected contract to run this program. The city never goes to the yellow pages to find a vendor that can supervise and run a huge program like this. Keep a close watch and see who comes out running this mess. Always suspicious of anything these low life politicians come up with to "help us".

What unbelievably fucking ignorant comments are showing up from the citizens in the comments section of the news story.

Truly, Chicago has to have the most uneducated citizens of any major city.

What else would explain electing a crooked ballerina to be mayor?

(And there are issues out there with him being crooked that are being over looked by the media. Don't want to mention anything about a box of ballots that were brought into a precinct after it was closed. No wouldn't want to do that because it wasn't investigated the first time. Why would it be now?)

Emmanuel, the start of a new crime family? Time will certainly tell, because the media won't.

This is how it begins. The Progressive agenda will require public sector employees to comply to the mandates of the city. They will now know your medical conditions that only your doctors knew before. This isn't done in order to help you but to control your actions. This not only involves you, but your spouse and your children. This is what Obamacare will be like. This is just a preliminary experiment of what is going to be implemented by one of this abomination's creator, Emmanuel.
You keep giving away your freedoms little by little and they will eventually control you. They tell you where to live, what to eat, what you can and cannot do. Last time I checked Chicago was in the United States of America and not in Cuba, China, North Korea or Vietnam.
This is the Progressives eventual plan for everyone both in the public and private sectors. The Obamacare laws were rammed down this country's throat by the Democrat Party against the will of the People.
You will now have three choices; Comply, Pay $50 for yourself and $50 for your spouse each month or quit and leave this Socialist state and be free.
Choice is yours. I pray that you make the right one for yourself and your family.

I know I should exercise more and be healthier.
In that regard I sort of see the point of this. On the other hand this reeks of big brother and I don't like that.
In previous dealings with the City I know that once they get their foot in the door with something then the gap just keeps widening. Look at our medical insurance contribution for an example it went from being free to "only 2.00 per check". How much are you contributing now?
However this program is initially contsructed now it's gauranteed to be more inclusive and intrusive in the future.
That's where I have a problem with it.
I do however wholeheartedly agree that something like this should be forced upon the government leeches.
If you are a Link user etc. a program like this should be mandatory or your benefits get greatly reduced.

Is this the first shot to overhaul our entire Medical. Let's face it, we have the best system in the City. And those who abuse it are well aware of that. If they limited us to a specific number of days on the medical per year, this would be a completely different job. Is that the real goal, to limit our Medical?

The city can provide the information so we can take it to our personal physcian. He then can sign off on the form that certain things were discussed. That should be enough. No reason to go to the city provided doctor to ask the same questions. This would however, push some to have an annual physical, something that is probably sorely needed by many who neglect their health.

Food stamp dollars (and I think TANF too) are 100% federal bucks. States pay 50% of their own admin costs...but the actual food stamps are USDA baby! i.e. stop thinking food stamps is all about lazy people wanting handouts and realize big companies love them and now fast food restaurants are trying to get access to food stamp revenue. Some of you guys are falling for the same hoodwink that is being pulled over the public's eyes with police and CTU. Of course there is abuse....we all know that...but why not fix it? So, it's too "embarassing" for people with link cards to have their picture on it to prevent fraud but the gov't wants me to pour my medical history out to someone that isn't my doctor because I am a government employee? NOT going to happen. People receiving gov't assistance don't need to even attempt to find employment, don't have to pass drug tests, don't have to buy healthy food and don't have to participate in any kind of "wellness" plan, and yet because I WORK for a living and pay taxes that fund my salary I have to have some stranger in my personal health business? Makes perfect sense. I have no problem with trying o be healthy. In fact I work out when I have time and eat healthy food. But I do it because I want to. Forcing people to do so doesn't work. If you want to encourage people to live healthy lifestyles do it with education and campaigning about the benefits. Threatening peoples' pocketbooks does NOT motivate. I envision a lot more medical abuse so people have excuses.

Personally, I think it's fair. You work out, watch what you eat and don't smoke, you should get a break on the insurance. Why should I underwrite the cost of taking care of some fat slob who has diabetes but continues to eat fried food and donuts? I feel the same way about the morans that ride their bikes w/out helmets. You have a choice, sure. Want to hear the wind rush thru the holes in your head? Fine, then I shouldn't have to wipe your butt when you're in re-hab and we all foot the bill with increased insurance rates. Don't want to wear a seat belt? Fine. When the bambulance comes to get you, you should by default go right into surgery for organ donor harvesting.

Most people don't realize they have a health problem until it's too late, then they say they wish they knew earlier.

A free wellness program is a good idea, you should think of it as a added benefit that others don't have, instead of something negative.

The last place I worked at had two different prices for insurance depending on whether you smoked or not.

The smokers premiums were higher in case you were wondering about that.

I object to any strong arm tactics designed to tax my liberty. This is The United States Of America where we are free to do as we will as long as it's legal. Food, smokes and booze are all legal things we can partake in if we chose and I don't need some Mob guy wanna be telling me what I should eat, drink or whatever or he's going to fine me $50. I eat pretty much whatever I want and I'm not fat at all, I smoke but have never missed a day of work or hit the medical because of it, I rarely have a drink and when I do it's at home and even then only one or two. If you think he will stop at $50 a month your nuts and would have fit in well with your keepers in some communist country. This is the U.S., bite me Pinko.

off topic

Im a retired PO I just heard about a cluster fuck at Illinois Masonic hospital on Thursday.

Apparently a one man unit was guarding a prisoner who was arrested for murdering his neighbor.

The prisoner was a drug addicted lunatic and the murder was a committed by a violent beating

The prisoner asked to use the bathroom and when he came out he was armed with the glass shelving from the medicine cabinet, which he had broken in two and was intent on using as a weapon

A nurse was injured by the glass and the officer had his hands full calling for help, protecting his weapon, and trying not to get injured by the glass and the almost certain blood borne diseases that this walking black plague infected shit head was infected with

The responding officers had a tough time locating the situation on the 5th floor psych unit etc etc etc

As I said, it was a cluster fuck

Here are my questions

1 Who the fuck was the 016 watch commander who assigned a one person unit to this prisoner guard detail? He ought to be reassigned as a PO and given prisoner guard details exclusively for about 2 years

2 Why was this asshole taken to a hospital where real people are being treated and visiting and where employees are probably untrained for this type of scenario? He should have gone to the Bridewell.

What if this asshole had gotten the officer's gun, which I heard that he was trying to do?

Now besides an injured copper youve got a maniac running around a hospital exchanging shots with the police or holding sick patients hostage or employees or visitors hostage etc etc

As I said it was a cluster fuck and I believe the fault of the supervisor who sent a one man unit to guard a violent prisoner in an unsecured hospital

I dont know how or why for that matter you guys do it

Be safe out there

Poorly designed wellness programs such as this one are bogus. A company I worked for instituted one very similar, and I paid the $50 per month to opt out because it was insulting and an invasion of my privacy.

The initial "medical exams" were conducted by hack tecnhicians in the cafeteria where we ate lunch. My fellow employees got follow up "advice" via frequent emails and phone calls that often conflicted with what their own doctors were telling them.

I also recall that there was a release form you had to sign acknowledging that the program administrators would share your health data (absent your name but including other identifying info like birth date and sex) with unnamed third parties.

Like a previous poster suggested, our program was all about controlling us. There were prize incentives for taking part in approved on-site group activities. But no incentives or subsidies for anything involving individual choice like joining a gym or running marathons.

The biggest mistake that business ever did was give away free health care. You should have skin in the game to maintain a healthy quality of life. On the other hand the city is self insured and BCBS manages the program, I personally think the city profits off the insurance program. If they were bleeding money they would have tried to get rid of it years ago. The police PPO would cost a self insured family of four around $15,000 per year with the prescription plan and your deductible would be $1500 per person. Plus we have the flexible spending account which saves you 20%.

The goal of LINKs and welfare is to buy votes. The goal of this wellness program is to charge more for health care. They know city employees don't vote the way they want so they gave up on the carrot a long time ago and now only employ only the stick.

They will take tests; Random Drug will now include Body Mass and Liver Function.

Then it will be our leisure activities. Hunters, will have to pay the $50, as well as any shooting sports, competitive shooter will pay. Then include fishermen, skiers, snow boarders, and rock and mountain climbers.

Did you get a speeding ticket or an automatic red light ticket then you will pay the $50 or more.

Our last contract allow people 55+ to retire and receive free health insurance until medicare eligible. The City would have us believe this benefit was due to their genorosity. The new Mayor will have you believe that he had a vision, inspiration, whatever, to announce and implement this wellness plan.

Wrong on both counts. As part of the Obama Plan, the government is reimbursing public and private sector employees for this retiree health care at 55+. However one of the provisions is that the "applicant", in this instance, the City, must initiate some type of program (wellness program is one of them)to reduce the cost of health care. The government subsidized retiree reimbursement plan expires 12/31/2014. At that time, retirees will move to a different plan.

I hope FOP is aware of this. They should be, and they should have informed the membership of it when people started taking advantage of it. This is not a gratuitous thing that the City is doing for us as they would have you believe.

If people can't be bothered to take simple steps to become aware of health problems early on, then let them pay more to help offset the huge costs they're likey to incur later once the problem is worse."

=====================

So the people that can't be bothered to take the simple steps of keeping the work environment clean and safe from mold spores and bacteria should be made to pay the huge cost from the chronic illness that it creates then.

Okay.... Give them a $50 ticket per employee until the building is clean and if they still don't clean it up tow their cars...lol

Hate to support Rahm on anything, but this would be one of those things. My understanding is that most large law enforcement agencies enforce at least some level of physical standards yearly if not daily or weekly.

So if he's not incentivizing folks to hear something about their weight and eating habbits and smoking and drinking habits, he could do something far harsher to some folks. The city could simply adopt the industry standard weight standards, sorta like the military. That would be way harsher for the officers that are the greatest part of the concerns the city is addressing.

The incentivized counseling smacks of a nanny state, but I'm not sure I'd want to see the alternative of a strict weight standards the way you see in other places.

This was before we were worried about the city getting in our business. Not long after it ended, it turned out the dr's weren't looking at any of the results or x-rays. Spot On !! yet if you read the plan(boring), there is not one word or line that mentions keeping the accrued time on the books for ransom. The idea behind the grant is to supplement the city for not only health care but also any time or payments (severance pay)that the city may owe the respective retiree.
DALEY has kept the comp time due and made it as payable over a four year + period with an annual cap in exchange for retiring at 55 with city paid health care.
Now what might one expect to hear from the city after the four year period is up in 2014? When bo be gone ? When, by then, the health care plan has been decimated by the courts and funding is gone ?
So the city has obama money to pay for the health care and also the officers accrued comp time too.

I wish there was a solution that we could all agree on. It's amazignto read the ages of our deceased brothers and sisters in the FOP newsletter each month. Way too many 55, 58, 60, 61 etc.

Unfortunately, it's just the nature of the beast

Sorry, SCC...it's not a bad idea. We really do need to be in shape. Police and Fire will not be the problem...but we'll indeed be targeted...make that profiled (literally and figuratively)

Problem is many do-nothing-lay-about-beasts that weigh 250-300 lbs in other city jobs are indeed a constant stress on insurance claims.

Just the facts, Sgt Friday.

9/17/2011 06:35:00 PM

Dear Sgt Friday. I am over weight, very overwieght but still work every day and do not use the medical. I watch my young, skinny co-workers use the medical for every little complaint. Or they use any possible excuse to go on light duty. Is weight the only criteria you are using for abuse, Sgt Friday? We all need to exercise and to improve our health but be careful who monitors the program. I do not trust the city or white shirts. Sgt FRiday, GFY!

9/17/2011 05:41:00 PM

Is there a proven link between the white mold spores and cancer? The ecinetific filed cannot agree on the issue of white mold spores so do not use work enviorment as an excsue not to exercise and loose weight. We all need help to improve our health.

I am lucky enough to be in good heath, but it still pisses me off to read comments about fat asses, smokers, drunks etc. Some people are fucked by genes others are just unlucky.A health catastrophe can strike anyone anytime.Your lucky if it's not you.

9/17/2011 02:07:00 PM

I think we all realize that. We're not talking about people who get sick or injured due to no fault of their own (genes, accidents, etc). The problem is people who CHOOSE to not exercise, eat unhealthily, smoke, etc and don't take any steps to improve their health. Everyone else ends up having to pay more for their bad choices, and that's not fair. People who choose to ignore their health should pay more for insurance.

Instead of being a power hungry dictator asshole.Rham would get better results if he would take $50.00 off your insurance bill if you participate. Then it is a reward and I think more people would be inclined to co-operate.When you threaten to punish those who do not go along it is more the power hungry socialist.

9/17/2011 02:04:00 PM

Good point. I agree that people would feel much better if they were rewarded for doing something rather than being punised for not doing it.

Unconstitutional. Just like Obama-Care, in a local package. democommies looking to make more money off of you, the Taxpayer, again, as usual. Just don't pay for ANYTHING more, when these politicians come up with another brain fart. It's just designed to continue fleecing you down the road, and to take your eye off the ball so you won't think about holding them accountable for the messes they've already created. Let em fix the messes we're saddled with now because of their lies, trickery, and thievery, before allowing them to do ANYTHING else. Hold THEM 100% Fully Accountable for all your Tax-Dollars they've Stolen and Wasted. Don't let em have any more schemes [ideas to Democommies] put into law or ordinance till they prove themselves completely fiscally accountable, and lead us out of the debt that THEY put us into, WITHOUT raising fees and Taxes to us Taxpaying Citizens. What about the Illegals here in Sanctuary City? Think they will have to pay even a dime into this? Gonna fine the welfare-entitlement bunch if they don't participate? Yeah, right, like they'll really pay up. Guess Who's getting stuck with this potential gigantic Boondoggle? Right.

Give me an hour to work out during my bullshit 8.5 hour day. I'll do it. But between every asshole in this state and even the asshole running the country reaching into my pockets every ten minutes, I can't afford to do it off duty. I have to work to many side jobs to pay the Catholics for school (thanks ghetto people for ruining pub schools), property taxes, income taxes, tolls, sales taxes, county taxes, plate stickers, city stickers, the list goes on and on and on. The list that is there to keep the working man down, while putting the non working man up on a pedestal. If you ask me...the above things have the making of a workers revolt.

No more drunken mopes that sound like a gathering of the UN outside my condo babbling and waking me up. Not to forget the pimp-mobiles that cruise the city neighborhoods with ear piercing sound systems at all times of the day and night.

If Rahm is so worried about my health why is everything regarding wellness not covered by my city run insurance. Before I retired I could not go for a physical, etc. and my wife could not go for a mamagram etc. without lying and saying there is a problem before the insurance would cover it. It's worse now that I'm retired and I still have to pay them $800.00 a month regardless.

"Not a bad idea for us public employees. This should also be used for the link card crowd."

"Precisely."

Anything but the elimination of "Sanctuary Cities" and wide-open immigration -- anything but an either/or choice of free birth control or no additional payments for new children one is unable to support.

I know, I know. "Racism!"

"Genocide!"

That, as the black population is predicted to double to 60 million by the year 2050....the overall population to increase by 150 million.

Seems like they started with those "accessible" rectangular door latch bars you sprain your fingers or wrist instinctively trying to grasp when you can't.

Oh -- where's the five hundred million of tax money that went into that bankrupt Obama solar cell company?

So does this mean we can work out on our lunch half hour? if not, why not? Iworked out at a gym in the district9the same one i go to Off duty) and I was threatened with discipline if I do it again. But this was before this wellness idea< so maybe i would be ok to exercise on my half hour.
