FOP Reads the Blog

Trustee Rich King left a lengthy response in the "Buses to Springfield" posting. We're giving it its own thread since it contains a lot of valuable information:
  • The bill authored by Rep. Cross from Oswego is nothing more than an attempt to circumvent the law that was passed by the legislature in Springfield forcing the city to live up to its obligations and bring the Chicago Police Pension Fund up to 90% in 30 years. Since its passage the city has introduced several bills attempting to water the bill down by extending the 90% target date to 50 years and failing in that attempt 40 years. Some of the city's legal minds have found a loophole that renders the law ineffective if the pension board does not request that the city's sales tax revenue be withheld if the city does not provide the funding that an appointed pension actuary says is necessary to reach that 90% funding level.

Rep. Cross who's district is in Kendall and Will County has no Fire and Police agencies in his district that will be effected by this bill (HB 3827), yet he had chosen to champion this cause. He claims that it would be in the best interest of the Police Pension to have the Mayor of Chicago be in control of how our funds are invested.... Has he never heard of the former Mayor's Nephew by the Name of Vaneko. All the Mayor's appointed Trustee's voted to give the Mayor's Nephew over 15 million which is now lost.
Over all the city pension fund I believe the mayor's Nephew got over 62 million which again was soon lost. Is Rep. too young to remember former Mayor Harold Washington's attempt to use the Police and Fire Pension funds to fund low income housing. Does anyone doubt what a financial disaster that would have been ?

If the Mayor had a permanent 4-3 majority that would have been passed and our fund would be in even more trouble. Rep. Cross wants you to give control he says to the Mayor who will better invest our funds, this being the same Mayor who has such a short memory that he can't even remember his involvement, as President O'Bama's Chief of Staff, in the disastrous Cylindra scandal that cost the American Taxpayers over 500 million ! yes Rep. Cross this is the man that needs to be in charge of our Pension Funds.

Who are you kidding Rep. Cross from Oswego. I am sure down the road we will find out what kind of deal has been struck between you the republican House Leader and our new Mayor, O'Bama's former Chief of staff. How does the republican National committee feel about your cozy deal with Rahm ?

FOP members politicians only fear our votes. We must show them that we are a force (voting Block) to be reckoned with. I can not stress the importance of defeating this bill. This bill will influence many things including future cost of living increases. If there is any way that you can get on these buses down to Springfield to show our strength I urge you to do so, even if you have to miss a day of work on your side job or a Dr. appointment etc. If not instead of showing these politicians our strength we show them our weakness.

To make it as convenient as we can to get you to come out and stand with us, we have arranged to have a bus leave from the 22nd District at 8:00 am. Please call FOP at 312 733-7776 and say you will stand with us down in Springfield, We need to put on a show of strength. Your Pension hangs in the balance.

Google: "solyndra bad bet"

What are you doing making "bets" with the finances in the shape they are in? You can be that caviler when it's not your money and you're not personally impacted.

Thanks, SCC.

I've been getting tired of seeing the whining crybabies on here bitching about the unions' response to EVERYTHING mentioned on this blog just minutes or hours after any news story or blog post comes out!

I'm sure the FOP DOES read the Blog, just like the media and elected officials (ie. Tiny Dancer) and the CPD administration ALL read this blog; because they can get real time, behind the curtain information here that CANNOT be gotten anywhere else.

This is a unique location where ANYONE can pop in and get a look at life in the ghetto and in the trenches of the big city police, unsavory and unpolished as it might be. Much can also be learned here about the barren, corruption infested government that was left behind by the Godfather and the Daley Crime Family and the new Mayor's attempts to pick up the criminal pieces and make them his own. Quite a good read, most of the time!

Keep up the good work, and we'll see ya in Springfield!

It's only confirmation of what we've suspected all along, SCC...

These rotten sons of bitches at City Hall have bled our pension fund nearly to death over the years.

Now they're trying to draft legislation in order to cover-up their thievery and keep us in the dark regarding the same.

"If we can't steal from it, we'll make sure you won't get a nickel of it."

Perhaps Chicago & Illinois need their own "Arab Spring" since the political-criminal class thinks it's ok to steal from people who SACRIFICED 20 to 40+ years of their lives and good years off the back end of their lives due to stress & aggravation.

Where did this bullshit of "let's fuck with The Police and their pensions" come from? Did they ever have a clue that it's generally a bad idea to steal from people who have weapons and are fed up with being shit on?

These people who are so dishonorable themselves are counting on The Policeman's sense of honor to prevent real time redress from being sought for the years of one orchestrated outrage after another?

The hateful tyrants of The Chicago political-criminal class have gotten quite fat and content just like the tyrants of North Africa & the Middle East.

Even if FOP thinks the CME/CBOE tax break is a great idea, the Occupy people can at least occupy the time and attention of politicians such that the politicians don't have time to occupy CPD pensions.

According to a Sun-Times story, Rahm is sharpening up the pencils for the minority and women contracting procedures. Looks like they know where they will "invest" the pension money already. Bet these companies have been formed for months now.

Also saw in the Times that one of the gaming companies will be the private partner (to the tune of millions) for the boathouse on the Chicago River near Bridgeport. Coincidence?

Yes, all of the comments so far are right on the mark. However, this pension problem is not unique to Illinois. Most states of the union are struggling with underfunded pensions. Independent thinktanks say that there is no way the cities and states can tax their way to solvency, the funds will collapse within a decade or so. Then, what is the answer ? If you are against raising the retirement age and asking for more contributions, then what is your solution ? And, raising taxes to cover the loss or selling city assets will just not work./ People all over this country are hurting financially and they would not stand for tax increases that are needed to fully fund pensions that they view as overly generous.

AN OPEN LETTER TO ILLINOIS STATE REPRESENTATIVE TOM CROSS

Dear Representative Cross:

I believe that after 34 years of honorable service to the City of Chicago, my house, my car AND my pension belong to me, not anyone else.

I believe that over the good years and bad, politicians have continuously and intentionally underfunded public pensions, simply because there was no legal compulsion to do otherwise.

I believe that in both past and recent years, politicians have systematically raided our pension funds to reward politically connected friends and "union leaders" with obscene unearned benefits.

I believe that politicians of this city and state have steered disastrous "investments" of our pension funds to relatives and politically connected friends.

I believe that politicians in the State of Illinois and across the country have lost all sense of accountability. To give any of them unfettered control of pension boards is nothing short of ludicrous.

I believe that all of the above is exacerbated by your introduction of HB #3827. You claim to have solely created this narrowly drawn bill, but it only affects persons outside of your constituency. With all due respect sir, your motives and integrity are called into question by your own actions.

I believe that the passage of HB #3827, as currently written, would visit a travesty upon the tens of thousands of workers and retirees who have no political connections or influence, except through elected representatives on their respective pension boards.

Very truly yours,

Lieutenant James R Padar (retired)

House Bill 3827 Update

State Representative Cross initially introduced HB3827 which would have had a negative impact on the makeup of our Pension Board in that it would have put the Board in the hands of the Mayor and his appointed members while placing our elected members in the minority. Today, Representative Cross pulled the bill out of committee. While this is a victory for the moment, the Lodge and our lobbyists will continue to monitor this particular bill. We will be diligent in protecting our members pension.

The Lodge would like to extend a hearty thank you to all of our members who called or emailed their State Representatives prior to the Personnel and Pension Committee meeting that was held this afternoon.

President Shields, along with the Lodge 7 Legislative Committee, met with several Springfield leaders today to ensure that this bill never got out of committee. They were instrumental in getting this bill pulled. Their efforts should be commended.

FOP UPDATE:

Please do not let this victory stop you from coming down to Springfield to sound your voice in the battle that has been waged against our pensions. The Lodge has confirmed 180 officers will proudly be on the buses to Springfield tomorrow. We must let our voices be heard.

I ain't buying it. This is just the liberal dummycrats trying to balme things on a Republican who was powerless in digging us into the fucking shithole our pension fund is in

On a side note... may I rant here a bit about Illinois taxes? It's tied to pensions because that's how we get half the money to fund them.

There's something here that I don't think most people get with the latest tax increase. We are being taxed in Illinois without representation.

The State raises individual taxes from 3% to 5% in 2011.

A portion of State income taxes is supposed to go back to the local communities and municipalities. <a href="http://www.cmap.illinois.gov/policy-updates/-/blogs/understanding-the-state-income-tax-increase?>Check this out</a> though because what was done as part of the State income tax increase was to prevent any of that new tax revenue from going into the local communities from which the money came.

Now I'm not an Obama supporter and this is not an endorsement for him I just want to say that there's a lot of politicians making noise on how Obama's economic policies are not working.

In Illinois I tell you one reason why Obama's econ policies are not working.

Obama gave the people an FICA tax break of 2$ to create an economic stimulus. In Illinois the Governor and lawmakers immediately took that money with the 2% State income tax increase...The people here saw ZERO stimulus..and then Illinois did not send any of that new tax revenue back to the local communities. The Obama tax break was an Illusion in Illinois and did not stand a chance of creating jobs.

Illinois politicians are counting on the voters to have a short memory too. You'll notice how the so-called temporary State income tax increase is set to expire around election time.

You'll also notice that the individual income tax increase doesn't return to where it was and is therefore not completely a temporary tax as the label implies.

NO..they are conditioning us to a higher tax rate. Raise the taxes by 2% and then cut them back by only 1.75% and tout how you're getting a tax break -- do it around election time -- we're really getting a .25% tax increase and it's bullshit.

You see what's happened here.

They took the private sectors retirement FICA payroll tax money and they are going after your pensions in a similar manner. Let us remember this come election time. That's all. Vote out the lifetime career politicians that think they are so slick.

Why should there be ANY tax increase. The City. State, Country get more tax money from all of us due to the simple fact of inflation and cost of living raises via wages. How much is enough? These people are supposed to be public servants and not for profit businesses rewarding themselves and their friends lavish paychecks.

10/25/2011 06:06:00 AM

================

This is the typical behavior that's responsible for the condition that the pensions are in.

They are proposing an estimated give back tax break to the exchanges (I.E. CME) of around $100 million dollars a year -- each and every year..

To put that into perspective they just gave Motorola a tax break of $100 million over a ten year period.

There's you money that should of gone to funding the pensions.

The politicians that got the campaign contributions from companies that were awarded tax breaks have it.

Obama and Romney are out there whoring themselves out to the corps right now trying to "raise" one-billion dollars and we have the same thing on a local level.

It needs to stop. The CME just reported a 15% increase in profits too and where's the jobs..not the b.s. Ford motor company shovel-ready temporary poverty $16K/yr starting wage jobs. The living wage jobs. The jobs..Not the 2,000 Ford jobs touted as a great political success that a family of four can qualify for Food Stamps with.

Yeah the CME is in the news with their $100 million a year tax break and right behind them is Sears corp. demanding their tax break.

Do me a favor.

Next time any of the politician give you the: " ...and this will create the much needed jobs for our community" just ask them what are these jobs going to pay, how long are they expected to last.

A six month shovel ready job even if it pays a living wage is not a bright future when six months later the people are back on the streets.

Cross os doing the dirty work in order to get the liberal lakefront vote to become secretary of state when Jesse White retires. Liberals don't want to see ANY city worker receive a pension.

Well Mr Correction, here is one for you. 553 million is quite a bit closer to half a billion than half a trillion. Aside from that, I agree with your point.

======================
Did my post come off as abrasive? Wasn't meant to be.

Nevertheless that's fair. I stand corrected on the dollars. I was asking myself right after I posted that did I type million or billion?

Anyways, just wanted to get the right spelling of the name out there so people wanting to research it would be able to that's all.

SORRY, but although retired, I definitely could not make the trip for personal reasons.
However, my extreme gratitude to those who sacrificed their 'personal' obligations to attend on my behalf on the Springfield buses.
Each and every one of you make me proud once again to having been a member of... "Chicago's Finest!"
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

(From a retired Cop) Thanks to our elected representitives in Springfield Com Edison is one step closer to being able to fuck us on rate increases for the next ten years. I always thought our politicians were elected to represent and protect US. Guess not. These low life self serving Bastards like Madigan and Cullerton are the very scum of the earth. They, and their ilk, line their pockets with gold and piss on us. I can pay my electric bill but how many poor folks and seniors are stuck with choosing between electric, heat in the winter, and food. How many of our seniors are fighting every day to buy medications and pay medical bills. This country is so fucked up. What is the answer? I know and I see it on the way. The seeds are already being planted by the folks in the Occupy movement. We should not be serving greedy corrupt politicians...THEY SHOULD BE SERVING US!

Some poor out of work guy is driving to a food pantry and is going 23 mph in a 20 mph school zone. Bingo! Rack up another $100 for the city that cares about us all. This poor guy doesn't have two dimes to rub together and a camera has just nailed him with a ticket. Can he go to court to contest this ticket? No. He goes to a city hearing officer who says...Sorry Chump "Pay me NOW"! Please believe that if Racoon Eyes gets his way with putting speeding cameras near schools within a short period of time these speed traps will be all over the city streets. Most of us have probably gotten a red light camera ticket. This is the next kick in the ass.

Yes, Madigan controls the State of Illinois. He has enough cash in his political fund to buy many state elected officials and he has the power to tie up any bills in committee to keep then off of the floor. he is solely responsibile for continuing the tuition give aways that people call " scholarships". The real question here is why does he keep getting elected? Madigan is from a small district on the SW side of Chicago. If these voters rose up against him, of course he would lose and the problem would be solved. This district is loaded with city employees. THEY are the ones keeping him in office. So, go blame yourselves !!
