Another Photo

NBC 5 covers the recent NIU murder in depth (go view it before they take it down again):
  • A Markham teen has been charged in the shooting death of a Northern Illinois University student at an off-campus party, DeKalb Police said Wednesday afternoon.

Chaz Thrailkill, 19, is accused of getting into a fight with Steven Agee II, 22, early Wednesday at an apartment complex at 809 Edgebrook Drive, police said. Agee, a sociology major and student leader on campus, was shot three times in the chest around 2 a.m. and later pronounced dead at Kishwaukee Hospital.

Thrailkill was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Thrailkill was arrested at 10:42 a.m. in the 1100 block of Varsity Bl., police said, and is being held on $3 million
UPDATE: We're being told the hand signs the victim is posing with is an actual fraternity along with the colors he is pictured wearing. While we have no idea why a fraternity would condone emulating what gets hundreds, if not thousands of people killed every year in cities across the nation, we'll remove the sarcastic portion of our posting along with the photo for the time being.

Of course, not a peep from father of the victim or offender or even a mention. Dad(s) is(are) probably safely ensconced in one of our finest penal institutions somewhere with a name like Pontiac, Big Muddy or Marion.

To All,

Before anyone starts with the comments about the picture that has been shown of the victim in this incident I would like everyone to be aware of what you are seeing. In the picture of Steven Agee that hand sign that you are seeing is not a gang sign. Steven Agee was a member of a International Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, which has been in existence since 1911. The hand sign is representing a saying that members use. The saying is the word YO! you have the three upright fingers indicative of the letter Y and the thumb and other finger touching to represent the letter O. This was not another gang banger killing another gang banger. Steven Agee was a leader on the NIU campus as well as a leader within the Fraternity. He was young man with a plan and heading in the right direction. He was online to graduate and had already secured employment for after graduation in the professional world. I just want everyone to know this was a tragic loss to his family, friends and the community. And before anyone thinks I am some troll commenting I am 25 year vet of CPD and a member of the same Fraternity.

May God Bless and Keep his Family as they journey through their Loss.

To those who think it is a gang sign it is not. Shows the stupidity of some just to label something "Gang like" when they don't know why don't you ask before you speak like I said before in an earlier post that is the sign for his college fraternity and even the gang bangers won't do that. Thanks to 1:04 & 2:55.

Well, if this is true then perhaps that fraternity should change things.
I am sure that they did not have "hand signs" back in 1911 !

To the rest of us in a morale society it looks like gang signs.

Again, perhaps the black community leaders need to try and change things.
Specifically: if you dress ghetto = you are ghetto.
If you use hand signs for anything other than sign language for the deaf = you are ghetto.
If you act like a fool and talk that way as well = you are ghetto.

I think that hand sign was a premonition of sorts.

Three upright fingers represent the three shots that he took to the chest. The thumb and forefinger joined to make a "circle" represents the new holes in his body.

And a member of an International Fraternity named Kappa Alpha Psi...or "KAP" for short. As in "I's finna put a KAP in dat ass"!!!

You're sure? How could you possibly know that? Kappa Alpha Psi came before all the nonsense gang signs. Perhaps you would recognize a gang sign when you saw one, if you were working in a busy district. The next time you try to claim the moral high ground maybe you should learn the difference between moral and morale, your time would be better working on you.

SCC and other brothers and sisters in blue...take a look at how many of these comments are offending CPD P/Os, not westside dogs or future honor students as they are often called. The victim's dad was quoted in the paper before his mom was, still someone says he's probably in IDOC. The kid, from the south burbs, was called a westside dope dealer on here and it was suggested that the fraternities (around decades before Chicago gangs and none originating from Chicago) should not use hand signs that college students recognize across the country.
He was a leader on campus, at NIU on academic scholarship, already set up with a job, not to mention elected to an intra-state position for his fraternity. So why are P/Os on here making fun of this homicide again? This is not a kid that we were going to get to know.

Depending upon which new outlet you were watching, the father of the victim was quoted making a statement. Later it was explained that after idenifying his son, the father was too overcome with emotion and grief to give an on camera interview. The victim's mother spoke before the cameras instead.

What I can't understand, police humor aside, is WTF is funny about a grieving parent who is obviously on the edge, numb of heart and mind, trying to make sense of what is senseless. To lose a child who is correctly engaged in society, actually making the grades and trying to earn an education so he can be a productive member of the community? What is it about your experience as the police, if in fact you are the police, that can not descern the difference between a genuine upstanding citizen trying to raise a family and the average bustouts that you may be accustomed to dealing with? If you tend to generalize about who you think are the bottom feeders in this society, then you need to get a f'n grip. The victim's mother doesn't have to be terribly affluent, but she certainly understands the importance of sending her son away to earn an education. I wouldn't label the victim or his family as ghetto until I had something solid to base it on.

Compassion, believe it or not, is also a good trait for the Real Police to have. Perhaps you need to consider that.

I totally agree with you 04:43:00 am. Whoever posted that crap needs to learn to get some facts before he posts something so f'n stupid. If he actually is a copper he needs to get some schoolin'. What's more he needs to understand that if he is taking this job seriously that he needs to evaluate what his job really requires. You CAN NOT generalize on this job. It will either get you killed or jammed up so bad with members of the community - whom you serve - that you will have to make some different career moves. You don't have to like a whole lot of people out here on the streets, but you do have to KNOW who you are dealing with. Everyone out here is NOT the same. A little common sense, a little observation, a little research and an open mind would have made it obvious that the victim's mother was in real, genuine pain. A law enforcement professional doesn't make snap judgements and public pronouncements about things like this. We already have a public relations problem. Does he think his stupid ass remarks makes it any better? And coppers wonder why many members of the public hate the police.

What a f'n loser!

You didn't allow it to get out of hand with the usual asinine comments that some folks make. It's sad to think that so many bloggers can only relate to or prefer to see this Mom falling out screaming, crying, and foaming at the mouth. Who are you to say how one should grieve their murdered child? I think Mrs. Agee spoke with clarity, she was respectful to the media and answered all of their questions, and instead of enjoying her holiday like most in America, she and her husband, Mr. Agee (who did make a brief statement) went on to plan for the funeral of their son. The media went back and even interviewed Steven's former high school principal, and the story remains the same... He was an all around upstanding role model, oh yeah, and a dynamic athlete! How about Steven was at NIU on an academic scholarship! Now I have to wonder...WHAT KIND OF KID ARE YOU RAISING? Please get a L I F E

I think you hit the nail on the head. Some of our brothers and sisters are incapable of discerning the difference between citizens and bust-outs when they are dealing with certain ethnic groups. Not every minority is a thug, welfare recipient or bust-out. Lot's of us are your co-workers, bankers, lawyers and teachers.
