What Does This Mean?

  • Chicago firefighters and paramedics have agreed to sign on to a healthcare plan for city workers that Mayor Rahm Emanuel has pushed as a way to drive down costs by keeping employees healthier.

But the move might have implications beyond firefighters' physical well-being. It comes about seven months before the Firefighters Union Local 2Ö contract lapses, and negotiations on a new deal could be contentious. Emanuel has refused to rule out seeking to close firehouses and reduce the number of personnel on each truck in order to cut costs.
So they've signed on....but Rahm hasn't ruled out closing, consolidating and reductions.

Gee, sounds like a win-win for Rahm.

And does this mean we're fighting on our own? Has Rahm's divided and conquer worked yet again?

A signature on a contract means nothing today, there's no accountability.

Point in case.

In NYC the Occupy protestors had a restraining order to be in the park and yet they where yanked out of the park.

In NYC the fix was in. The mayor waited until he could find a judge that would rule in his favor and everything was overturned just like that

In Dallas, the occupiers had a court order that enabled them to stay at their camp until Sunday. Last Wed. at about midnight the mayor order the police to evict them and so it was done. The signatures on paper meant nothing.

That said.. why would anyone think that a contract that is signed or a promise that is made will be honored given this track record.

The pension contributions were suppose to be brought up to 95% funding and instead they skipped payments.

They are unwilling or unable to talk about their obligations for that while preaching about being obligated to the ex-mayor and the clout where there is no written agreement or promises.

The lists goes on and on.

We are all in this together? NO WE'RE NOT!

Now we are about to force the handicap to pay for parking which some will argue in favor for....okay fine..however I ask you to look at who is going to benefit the most from having more people pay for parking and paying a higher parking fee?

Morgan Stanley that's who. Not the city. Not the taxpayers...no another corporation that will soon be demanding tax breaks like the CME and Sears.

Speaking of which we are looking at over $800 million a year in corporate tax breaks under the guise of saving/creating jobs. So no, WE ARE NOT IN THIS TOGETHER.

How about telling Sears and the CME to go pound sand if you don't want to contribute to our community we don't want you here. Stop with the never ending sellouts to the extortionist.

If we have $800 million to spend on tax breaks spend that money on small businesses in the community that want to be here. Don't spend it on this corporate financial terrorism.

Racoon Eyes little demons have given their boss a new idea to collect more money for the city. One of his little minions stated that we have taxed the shit out of water so how about making every in the city pay for the air that they breathe. The Racoon almost fell out of his throne! Why didn't I think of that said the mayor. We will tax every SOB for the right to breathe Chicago air. We will call it the "Oxygen Consumption Tax". If you live in Chicago or just visit you will be taxed. But we won't tax any child under 2 years old. Because we love little kids. If we catch anyone not paying the Chicago Oxygen Consumption Tax we will put a fucking plastic bag over their head and cast them out of the city. Chicago air too dirty or full of nasty chemicals....Fuck You Pay the TAX!

I'd say it sure looks like Rahms divide and conquer at work.
Maybe the firefighters union is really slick and there's something more to this but at face value it looks like they want to be seen as reasonable so the bully(RAHM) doesn't 't hurt them too badly during negotiations.

I am curious why it matters any. Cops are nothing special, just regular human beings. They won't die if someone merely touches them, any more then anyone else will.

Not a cop.

11/17/2011 02:46:00 PM

You're right; you're not a cop. I won't die if someone 'merely' touches me. A cop knows what the term 'lays hands on' means. You don't.

And, when a person batters a police officer, he's saying he has no respect for the officer as a human being, as an authority figure, and/or as an agent of the law. It speaks to a huge breakdown in societal norms and parameters. That's why it matters.

It may have no consequences at all. FOP offers free health screening which the city may offer firemen for free. If you see your doctor annually you may that screening information already. I think this was discussed by FOP this last summer. I dont think this is anything new.

From Sun Times

"The mayor has also hinted that he might support stadium authority chairman Emil Jones in his desire to renegotiate a lease that requires the Sox to pay just $1.5 million in annual rent — with additional payments tied to ticket sales — and gives taxpayers no share of concessions, parking or other stadium receipts."

This is more big breaks for the mega-rich. All to be paid for by cuts to middle class teacher, firefighter and police pensions.

It means they just fucked the rest of us. Who, exactly, 'signed on'? Their union? Geez. If we had time to work out all day we'd be healthier too. They don't have to answer call after call. How much down time do they have? I say put them on 8 hour shifts. 5 day weeks. How often is it that a fire runs into overtime? Plus, all you have to do is transport the oncoming shift to take over.

In case you haven't noticed, this and many posts have the stink of the Occupy Wall Street group on it. This subtle push to their side is obvious in a lot posts. I'm not buying in.

We pay almost 10% of our salary into our pensions and have forgone pay raises and benefits to fund it. The City has promised to pay in a % as part of our salary in a contractual agreement. They have consistently not met their payments.

Let me say it another way: You hire a roofer to put a new roof on. It's dangerous work, but you agreed on a price. While he is up there roofing, you decide a wrought iron fence would be nice too. You add the fence and some planters too, because your wife likes them.

Time goes on and those relatives from out of town show up, but they can cook and clean. They cost money, but you let them stay. Time far some new furniture too....... all while the guy is keeping you dry fixing the roof.

Roofs done and the guy wants his money to pay for his house and family. 30 years of dangerous work and a job well done. Now you say you don't have that kind of money. Now you are telling him he's not getting paid the price agreed upon when he first climbed that ladder. Who thinks that's fair?

WE are not Occupy Wall Street. We have done a physically, mentally and emotionally damaging job for decades (or will) and would like the pension we agreed on with the City. I can understand the fight for more pay, and other benefits. I can understand new hires getting different benefits. I cannot understand how you can take our retirement away.

Rhode Island Lawmakers Approve Pension Overhaul
Published: Friday, 18 Nov 2011 | 4:01 AM ETA major overhaul of Rhode Island's pension system for public sector employees passed in both houses of the state's Democratic-controlled General Assembly Thursday in a special session.

Nicholas Eveleigh | Stockbyte | Getty Images

Although the legislation passed overwhelmingly—57-15 in the House and 34-2 in the Senate—lawmakers expressed distaste even as they voted for the measure, aimed at addressing rising pension costs.

"It may be necessary, but it's certainly not fair," said House Deputy Minority Leader John Savage, a Republican.

The legislation, called the Rhode Island Retirement Security Act, would suspend cost-of-living adjustments for those collecting state pensions and raise the retirement age for most employees.

It would also set up a hybrid system for state employees and teachers, mixing a traditional pension with a retirement account similar to a 401k. The bill is unusual in that it affects current employees and retirees as well as new hires.

Governor Lincoln Chafee and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo wrote the bill to address skyrocketing pension costs.

Without changes, Raimondo's office expected taxpayer costs for pension plans would double to $600 million next year before ballooning to more than $1 billion a year in just over 10 years. Raimondo's office also worried that pension obligations could lead to downgrades for state and municipal bond ratings.

Many states are wrestling with rising pension costs, but Rhode Island's situation is among the worst in the nation. According to research from the Pew Center on the States, Rhode Island is one of only two states to have less than 50 percent of the funding needed to cover benefits that public sector employees have already accrued.

Opponents of the bill cited worries that raising retirement age for public safety workers would increase on-the-job injury, or that suspending cost-of-living adjustments for already strapped retirees would drive them to take advantage of state social services, creating financial strain elsewhere.

The bill that passed did not address an area that Chafee, an independent, considered a key concern. There are 24 towns and cities in Rhode Island that administer pension plans independent of the state, and many of those are less funded than state plans.

The original draft of the legislation included a framework to force those plans to become solvent. The version that passed contained a weaker form of the provisions, mainly requiring municipalities to commission studies of their pension plans.

OT

Did anyone see the article about which employees of city employees owe the city the most money. CTA employees being #1, and they have the CPD in position #5.This is so wrong. The Human Resource division keeps track of "arrears" and as soon as an officer dosent pay a H2O bill or a parking ticket they are called on the carpet. Then again maybe they meant civilians. But it seemed like a "spin" to make us look like dogs once again.

I'll brace myself for the usual retaliatory comments here, but I think the Fire union is making a smart move going along with this. If we sit here and act like tough guys who are not willing to make one single concession during contract negotiations while the rest of the city's departments are facing layoffs, we are in for a rude awakening. Look around, guys. None of us have been on the job long enough to remember a time when the economy was in this kind of a mess. If you think that we will get 4% raises, or raises at all, keep all our existing benefits, no increases in contributions, etc., you have your heads in the sand. I'm not alone in thinking that going along with this "wellness plan" would not be such a horrible thing. I'm sorry, but have you seen some of our "finest"? Every station has them! There are morbidly obese officers out there that are a danger to themselves and their fellow officers if they are on the street, so they are coddled by the bosses and kept inside if we're lucky. Yeah, yeah, I can hear it already "I'll be damned if the city is going to MAKE me get healthy." Fine, don't. Honestly, I don't care if you have a grabber in the locker room trying to fasten your duty belt. My point is that if the city wants to charge these guys and girls $50 more for health care on the off chance that they attempt (the city doesn't automatically jack up your rates if you can show you are making an effort to get yourself more healthy) to take control of their health, I say it's a concession I am willing to make. And, no, I am not a 5 year wonder in my 20s with my youth on my side. I am an old-timer by today's standards. I regularly take advantage of the wellness screenings offered by the FOP. A few years ago, one of those screenings showed that my cholesterol had gotten too high. I got myself to the doctor, changed my diet, took some recommended supplements, and it is now where it should be. And maybe I'll live a few years longer for it. Whatever. My point is that of all the concessions that city will want me to make with the next contract, I think this is one most of us can LIVE with. No pun intended. Well, maybe a little intended.

I was embarrassed knowing that people coming in to make reports, some legit, had to see this example of a chicago police officer, a supervisor! How is there not a policy in place that forces these officers to get healthier?! We are not garbage men or street sweepers guys. We are the police. Kinda don't blame the public for judging us when THAT 500 pound desk sgt is what they see. And I it's not like he's the only one I've seen. The leadership at Local 2 is certainly not up to the task of protecting their present day benefits, let alone attaining new ones. They do not have a respected President or a Political leader on their board. The 13 board members are considerd "losers", by the 5th floor.

The two Chicago officers, Alex Guerrero and Antonio C. Martinez Jr., were not charged in connection with the homicides.

Martinez retired in 2009 for medical reasons, but Guerrero was still on active duty at the time of his arrest on Thursday, said Police Superintendent Gerry McCarthy, who attended the press conference at the federal courthouse in Hammond.

OFF TOPIC: Hear about the Lake Forest principal who "sexted" lewd pics of himself to a student? Same thing happened at 35th street which made all of our lives miserable for those of us who work there. I guess Comp Stat secretary C.A can text naked pics of herself to McCarthy's Department issued Blackberry without repercussions. If it were meor most others, I'd be gone and in call-back Just Sayin

many years ago the fop accepted a medical plan ,that was basically a folder, that police health care plan on cover. there was nothing inside. fop gave local 2 money to negotiate a medical plan. the members were in a hurry to get money in their pockets. the term for this is trend setters. a negotiater wont give one group more than the other. fop has a history of settling quick. or better yet, make a union meeting, tell your officials what you want.

We will be following the way of Rhode Island's pension reform in the near future. The politicians are getting set up for it and Rahm is giving them political cover. Just read and article in the Trib today that said the states pension costs were underestimated and will double to the tune of 1 billion dollars next year Article will give politicians the excuse to vote to reform our pension Heres part of the article:
The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/rNwF2n) that retirement system analysts first thought the state would have to budget $422 million more for pensions next year. After more study, the analysts now predict the state will have to spend almost $1 billion more.

Re: The incident is complete bullshit, The piece of shit responsible for it, Is a Spanish Cobra who Lives at 5024 N. Ottawa, named Obed Deleon. A police fighting, gun toting drug dealing piece of shit. He was chased by Harwood Heights PD the other day into his house and then reported his car stolen shortly there after. HHPD called Chicago to let them know that the suspect had filed a false report. Chicago did not want to get involved due to a possibility of the gang banger filing a false complaint against them. What have we come to.......... Pussies

11/18/2011 08:50:00 AM

That's great that you stay in shape officer but you don't know what you're talking about...not completely. Those of us with BCBS insurance already have a wellness clause. So I don't understand why the city has to add this on. Can you explain that?

If anybody could read here instead of just shooting off at the mouth you would see they are following our contract with OUR wellness program which we have in place for 5 years now and administered thru Davis Optical! They have the same 600 per year for each family member for doctor visits and such the only problem has been for years is trying to collect on the Davis claim form which is invisible on their web site. Donavon has been for years trying to get a debit card like program but the city was dragging their feet. read your contract regarding letter of agreement.

A proposal increasing alcohol taxes by 50 percent in Cook County was approved Monday by the county board, even as some feared the additional taxes could hold dire consequences for many employers in the hospitality industry.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A package of tax breaks aimed at helping business and keeping a few high-profile companies from leaving Illinois could cost the government $850 million a year in its current form

The full cost of the package would hit state government in in fiscal 2014, just before the state's temporary income tax increase expires.

Please read!! When we voted for our last contract (which I voted NO for) t allowed the formation of a LMCC = Labor Management Cooperation Commitee. Consisting of 13 or so individuals who apparently get to make the decisions for the well being of the 8000 members.

The Executive Board (EB) of the Union voted 10-3 to participate. The rank and file had NO vote.

The EB basically screwed the members and eventually CPD by letting the city in the door.

If you read the proposal plan - The city will pick a vendor for us to see and we have to make a resonable effort to comply with their wellness plans - (eg., weight loss, quiting smoking, diabetes, hypertension control etc.

There is no clear definition of what "reasonable effort " is. There are alot of muddy details where the city can hammer us and collect the $50 per person per month fee. You and your wife must be seen unless you want to pay $100/mo. If you are separated but your wife is still carried on insurance..she's gotta go.

Best yet there is no caps to fees assessed. It can go up next year. Also, no where does it say what or where this money goes to.

Alot of details left to be given out.

There is a LARGE revolt coming against this - but we are stucknow. BE PREPARED FOR IT!!!! It's not our fault - call our Union...They think its the best thing since sliced bread!
