Cops Injured in Wreck

  • Three police officers were injured this morning after a man looking for a way home allegedly stole a taxi cab in the Gold Coast neighborhood and then struck a police car as he was fleeing, police said.

The incident was reported at 7:37 a.m. outside a Starbucks coffee shop at Dearborn and Division Streets when the cab driver flagged down a police officer to report that his cab had just been taken while he was inside the coffee shop, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer [...]

The man then drove the cab east on Division Street before turning south on State Street and then west on Walton Street when he went through a red light and struck a squad car carrying two officers with the Mass Transit Unit....

Not what you'd expect on a Sunday morning. Best wishes for a speedy recovery officers.

The beat officer on Division and Dearborn observed the Taxi leave the Starbucks, not knowing it was stolen. The officer placed the victim in his squad and informed him to notify the cab company to see if they have GPS. The Taxi struck the Mass Trans Unit and fled, those officers were taken to NW Hospital. As the beat officer gave out the movements of the Taxi assisting units responded to the GPS location. The Taxi driver hit another police marked vehicle and got out running from the scene. The officers gave chase, and one went down hitting his head a breaking a finger causing the 3rd officer to go the hospital. 3 officers injured. Felony charges approved for PSMV. Offender lives on the 8500 block of South Racine. 18th district officers busy this morning.

Low and behold a south side animal that needed a ride home. I can only imagine what he was up to in the Gold Coast all day. "Shopping" for Christmas phones...

Have the officers sue the driver and the cab company for negligence over leaving the car running......might as well try to get something out of this.

1) The taxi operator should have received a citation for leaving the taxi running with a key in it; it's illegal, and it's HIS fault that this mess resulted in officers injured.
2) The Vehicle Theft case report should have an optional box, labelled 'gift of auto by stupidity on the part of the owner/operator.'
3) Insurance companies should stop paying for theft or damage claims when shit like this happens. People know this crap (leaving vehicles running w/keys in them) is illegal, and makes unnecessary work for law enforcement. Let the owners/operators pay 'out of pocket' for this BS.

Can you post where it is illegal to leave the car running with the keys in the ignition. It might be stupidity but I don't believe it's a crime.

To the post where the law is guy.. Type this into google: 9-40-080 unattended vehicle- motor running a city charge. State charge 625ilcs 5/11-1401. I love it, a non police officer posting they know the law without consulting a Illinois vehicle code book or city code book, or not accepting the fact police officers know the law.

I didn't say I didn't believe you. I just asked for you to post it for curiosity. I guess I could have looked it up but it really wasn't that important since everyone does this (especially during the cold winter). I was a cop(retired now ty) (but sorry not a traffic guru and haven't written a ticket in several years so I don't really study the Ill. traffic code like you do). And I'm sure there hasn't been a time when it's 10 below and you didn't start your car up and warm it up while you run back in the warm house and wait. But I guess that would be ok for you to do as you bitch and moan as the civilian ticket writter slaps a ticket on your car and state "But I'm the police give me a break." Then you will come on the blog and complain about the ticket writers doing their jobs.
Don't reply back. I know you are the perfect cop who doesn't ever break the rules and sits home in mom's basement studying your IVC. Merry Christmas and enjoy the rest of your career. Keep paying into my pension fund as I am enjoying my retirement.

By the way I stated I don't think it was a huge crime as the original poster stated. Yes it may be some minor IVC where you can be a pimp for the mayor and write a precious ticket. If you think a parking violation is a huge "crime" I'd like to know where you work. Now go save the world and get that revenue for Rahm.
