A off-duty Chicago Police officer died after being shot Thursday evening while working security at a grocery in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.
He was shot during a robbery around 8:30 p.m. at M&M Quick Foods in the 1200 block of North Austin, officials said.
The officer died at Stroger Hospital, officials said.
Jerod Dent, 25, who lives near the store, said the officer had just been hired about a week ago after the store was robbed about three weeks ago.

Off-duty officer is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital

An off-duty Chicago police officer was in critical condition Thursday evening after being shot.
The officer was shot near North Austin Boulevard and West Division Street at about 8:30 p.m. He was transported to John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County where he was listed in critical condition.
It's believed the off-duty officer was working security at a grocery store.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
NO PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS YET.
SHOOTER WAS IN A STATION WAGON/RED TRUCK THAT WENT EASTBOUND ON LAKE POSSIBLY 4-5 MALE "WHITE" OCCUPANTS".
ALSO REPORT THAT CPD VEHICLE AND GUN ARE MISSING AND BEING LOOKED FOR NOW.

That office, like many Chicago Police Officers, work in the ghetto and other places as side jobs because they would like to earn more money to take care of their responsibilities to their families and to save for retirement. The City and the Civic Federation would be humane enough to understand that this officer is an example of the service Chicago Police give to their community both on and off duty. The systemic disdain toward the police officer by our leaders in the community, the clergy and politicians and even our leaders on this job has to be reviewed. The attitudes held by our leaders in regard to police is eroding law and order. An you not see this? And if our pensions were so exorbitant, we may not have lost officer Lewis tonight. My heart goes out to the family of this upstanding officer.

Sincere condolences to the officer's family. But what no one has mentioned is this--this officer's death was directly related to the lack of manpower on the street.
Police Officer/Evidence Technician Michael Flisk was assassinated (yes, assassinated) the day after Thanksgiving last year. As in past years, he'd planned to take that day off. Last year he was denied the day off due to the lack of manpower. He tried to take two hours on the end--he was denied due to the lack of manpower.
This newly assassinated officer lost his life because of the lack of manpower. If that store owner had to resort to hiring an off-duty police officer to protect his business--and if the animals are so fearless that they walked in and directly assassinated him, and took his star and gun, what does that say?
Yet McDrunk will continue to insist that there are enough police officers on the street. Our homicide rate is far above NY or LA. We lost how many officers last year? And why? Lack of manpower.
Hopefully the family will ban McDrunk and 9.5 from the funeral.

Police officers are held to a higher standard even when working to protect savage citizens. Anyone that comes into a store shooting has no regard for life. WGN interviwed "Rev" Ira Acree. Ira has a church in the 1200 block of N Waller. I can tell you that Ira is one of the biggest police hating "Reverends" out there. I know this because I've talked to him before. The newsmedia can't even get this one right. Interviewing him is like interviewing Adolph Hitler about the plight of the Jews.
Check out the dynamite email that John Northen sent to Channel 7, FOP and McPuppet before P.O. Lewis was killed. It's circulating all around.

A policeman was killed last night.
He died while protecting your rights.
His creed was to protect and serve.
This fate he didn't deserve.
A mom and dad have lost a son.
So many other jobs he could've done.
His wife and kids are left alone.
Their daddy won't be coming home.
His fellow officers are hurt so deep.
For a fallen brother they weep.
The morning paper will print a story.
About a policeman who died in glory.
The flags will fly at half mast.
Politicians and citizens will seem sad.
The funeral is tomorrow at noon.
It will all be over very soon.
By next week they will have forgot.

They should bulldoze that "mutt attraction" of a store and make it a police memorial for the officer.
Everyone in 015 and 025 knows that the store primarily attracted mutts 24/7 to get bullshit chips and pop.
I turned down two security jobs for New Years Eve, good money. But when my 10 year old daughter asks me if I will be home with her this NYE I couldn't say no.
We all need the money, but remember what's important.

Do me a favor fellow officers, please show up for this officers' services. Too many of us act as if this doesn't matter because we didn't know him. We see it as an inconveiance to drive across the city to Honor someone, but believe me it's the least we can do. Make the time. It means so much to the family. Trust me.... I know all too well.
