Heroic Effort

  • Two young children were killed in an early morning apartment fire on the Far South Side after one of them and a 6-year-old brother tried to warm up a pizza on top of the stove, officials say.

The 6-year-old and his pregnant mother were able to make it out but "there was a problem with the door" and she couldn't get back in, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. A police sergeant and a tow truck driver tried to reach the children but couldn't, he said.

  • The sergeant and the tow truck driver then forced their way into the apartment, Langford said.

"The sergeant hurt his shoulder, apparently ramming the door," Langford said. "The tow truck driver had a fire extinguisher and tried to put the fire out."

But heavy smoke and flames drove them back, he said.
The sergeant, a father of twins himself, and the tow driver suffered smoke inhalation and lord only knows what mental anguish in their immediate futures. They did everything humanly possible, but the deck was stacked against them. Both deserve high praise for their efforts. Many people wouldn't have even made it in the door.

Congrats to the 2 men! Wonder if CPD will recognize them for doing what was right? Or will the bosses find a reason to criticize?

First responders? Where's your gas masks and fire axes and extinguishers?

Should there not be one in every car?

Nice job by the two involved.
Today, Channel 9 reports that the (pregnant) mother that escaped has been investigated on at least 3 occasions by DCFS for child neglect/abuse since 2006.
Form your own opinions.
May God welcome those two innocent children into his loving arms.

First of all, I am pretty sure that the tow trucks in Illinois are required by law to have fire extinguishers, and obviously you do not remember the efforts in the 1970's to put extinguishers in police vehicles. They were red and mounted on the transmission hump, but somehow kept disappearing. They painted them blue and they still kept disappearing, or they did not work when needed because everyone had to try them out. Eventually they were put in the trunk along with the shotguns (another story), and since thet continued to disappear they had to be brought in at the end of the tour and then signed for at the start of the next watch, along with shotgun and radios. It also meant that for a time a Sergeant had to stand by the radio room and make sure that everyone took an extinguisher and shotgun. No Sergeant and the only thing taken by the beat cars was the radio.

Go figure!

Acts of courage happen each and every day by the Chicago Police Department. Most bosses dont even give a "that a boy" or "good job officer" let a lone typing up an honorable or other award to show some appreciation. And the media, gee wiz. All they publish is all the negative they can find or story they can twart to go against an officers actions or particular incident. I really hate this city and hate what this what was once a great police department.

For all of the inner turmoil on the job right now, we still have a difficult and dangerous job to do. It's mainly done by POs and Sergeants on the street with support of your watch commanders. Let's not rip each other apart based on the union busting decisions being rammed down our throats by the administration. At the watch level this job has always been about getting the job done. The number one concern of the exempt rank, which now includes captains, has always been and will always be about THEIR careers NOT yours. Our pensions and benefits are under assault. Lts, Sgts and POs need to stick together more than ever so we can save the prey and put away the predators. This is where lives are preserved and liability is protected. Job well done Sergeant!

Business Leader Asks for More Retail Security During NATO and G8 Summits

Lori Healey, executive director of the NATO and G-8 Host Committee, insisted that it is too soon to give downtown businesses any advice about the $40 million-to-$65 million event expected to turn the world spotlight on Chicago.

“It is four months away. So many things could change. There have been no logistical plans released. Until that time, I’m not going to make any pronouncements about what the business community should and should not do,” Healey said Tuesday.

“This sort of doomsday attitude is a little disconcerting,” Healey said. “If and when there are impacts, we’ll deal with it.”

WE'RE not planning, so why should you??!!

let's see. We have no masks or fire extinguishers, but we have automatic ticket writers that don't work and camera that always have ticket numbers.

Houston, we have a problem.
Now city open the fire extinguishers up for legit bid. Have a chicago co make them for a fair price. Have anyoneone willing to bid do it. No hurdles.

Yes there should but........
Don't know if a gas mask would help.I plead ignorance on this.

As far as the other equipment, we are lucky to have a spare in the trunk, and then even luckier to call another car over that has a jack and/or lug wrench that fits since those are not to be found in your trunk.
Nice thoughts, though only a pipe dream in this city.

Sometimes fire extinguishers in cars are useless. Over time the charge runs out and when you whip it out ready to battle a blaze all that comes out is a puff of smoke. How about families save a few dollars from their flamin hot budget and buy a smoke detector. They're only about $15 nowadays.

A gas mask will not help you in a fire. The smoke particular will clog up the filter, causing you to suffocate. The only system that will let you breathe during a fire is an SCBA. That's what fireman wear. As my FTO told me "we save more people from fires than the fireman do". My heart goes out to the poor souls who are now in heaven, Amen!

He used to work in 025 1st watch. He and a bunch of other officers decided to join MSF. A few months later MSF was disbanded and they were all sent to the far south side. Sgt. M.S. made a decision to join MSF. No one forced him.

To paraphrase; any sort of emergency planning displays a "doomsday attitude." "If and when there is a fire, we'll install smoke detectors and sprinklers and map evacuation routes."

*

What Lori is trying to say is that she's being made "uncomfortable."

There has been a paradigm shift; Facts, logic, reason no longer apply; everything hinges on one person's emotional fugues and vagaries. "Comfortable/not comfortable." Like tugging down stockings that don't quite fit.

Lori squirms in her swivel chair. Her "comfort level" is being interfered with.

Subject for useful and illuminating PhD. thesis; who first introduced this
phrase into our language?

It has done tremendous damage, allowing the ignorant to issue nonsensical edicts -- to hold sway over the rest of us by mere whim.

First thing ... I'm a Female police officer who grew up in the Roseland area. How dare Mary Mitchell say the community should if done more to help this ghetto rat!!! Yeah I said ghetto rat!!!! She had 3 kids and one on the way and she was 26!!!! When do we stop the abuse if the social services... The link, section 8, and when does she take responsibility for her actions as a parent... If the child has been given a proper dinner then maybe the child wouldn't of been hungry at 3am. I'm sure she gets hundreds in link every month. While we police families have to work three jobs to support ourselves...

The job that sgt and citizen did was heroic , but let's look at the big picture. As the other day I had to do paper on a dead 9 month old. Who died because her ghetto rat mother in father are not qualified to care for a dog.
