Hiring Veterans for G8?

A reader sent this in from the Illinois State Crime Commission/Police Athletic League website. Interesting:
  • Member companies of the Illinois State Crime Commission/Police Athletic League of Illinois have an urgent need to employ Iraq Afghanistan Veterans for security positions during the G-8 conference. These jobs will pay $20-$30 per hour and may lead to permanent full benefit employment. All must be prepared for security clearances including background check and drug testing.
So are these similar to independent security contractors? Are they filing side jobs that would normally be filled by off-duty cops (who will be doing 12-hour shifts in May)? And who's hiring for "permanent full benefit positions?"

This will be the part-timers used to bust the unions like hizzhonor busted the library unions right?

First they will be deputized and given assignments and then come the layoffs. When they offer you your old job back at half the wages, benefits, pensions the political apparatus will use the media to portray themselves as the great caring job creators/savior's, the hero's.

Hey we see it happening all around us!

Since when are all Iraq & Astan Vets qualified to perform security work? It takes 10 personnel to support 1 trigger puller in the field. There's a big misconception that every vet in the sandbox was involved in combat operations when operational logistics clearly prove otherwise.

It sounds like and could be a good idea for the stores along Michigan and State streets to hire some vet's for security but just some politican gets his or her hands on this and we will never see the end of some new strong arming graft. I bet some alderman already has some store front security company lined up at a premium price and the poor security guard will only get mininium wage.

The key words in the article are "may" lead to permanent employment, blah, blah, blah. In other words, when it's over so are you.

In the meantime what if some of these people get hurt? Who pays for their treatment when they have no benefits, i.e., medical, etc.

Maybe not such a good idea, but if one does not have a job it is probably very temptimg.

A letter to Andy Thayer...

I saw you on Chicago Tonight on Wednesday and I have a couple of things that I, a Chicago Police Officer of 15 years feel the need to address.

First, you stated that we are actively discussing ways of violating citizen's rights on secondcitycop. That's an outright lie. Nowhere on this sight has that been discussed, or will it ever.

Second, you refrenced the "25 million dollar federal jury award", and our "history of humaan rights abuses". You seem to not have a problem stereotyping ALL Chicago Police Officers, past and present. I would like you to replace "Chicago Police" with "African Americans" and ask yourself if you think that would sound racist.

Third, and I feel I can speak for ALL Chicago Police Officers when I say this. All we want are two things to happen everyday at work.

1. To go home to our families and

2. To be left THE FUCK ALONE while at work.

We don't want to have to go to domestic calls, write traffic crash reports, deal with drunks etc.

And we certainly don't want to have to deal with NATO/G8. If it was up to us, they would be held in fucking Guam. We really dont care who is coming to protest, or what thy're against. That is not our role as Police. All we want are the two things I listed above.

With all do respect, I think the problem lies with you and those who share your opinions.

Take the Boeing company for example. Again, we, as the police really don't give a fuck what they make or how many people across the worls are killed by their product. And, honestly, if their windows are smashed out by protesters, I really don't care personally and I think they can afford to fix them.

HOWEVER....I think this is where we differ on our opinions. We are obligated, by the oath we take to enforce the law of Criminal Damage to Property, therefore arrest the protester. THE ARREST IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF BOEING COMPANY OR US TRYING TO KILL FREE SPEECH. Too often, people like yourself spin that in the media to make us look like villians.

Any last, and certainly not least. I have seen you more and more on t.v. giving interviews, and, sir, you do not come across as a very likeable person. If you want to get support for your cause, you need to tone down the rhetoric because it doesn't really play well for the cameras.

I'm not a cop, but have been thinking about this (sorry, it’s gonna be long, but I feel strongly about this):

What if we just let the anarchists do whatever they want to do?

We all know that the people who will be causing the most trouble, and the highly visible damage, are not really peaceful protester, but rather, professional anarchists.

We know that they come to these events to antagonize you men & women in blue, by threatening, attacking, etc. so they can video tape it & turn around and sue the police (recently a great comments by an FOP spokesperson on the news about this, about a week or so ago, when the pamphlets about crowd control formations became public).

We also know that the people who actually are protesters, as opposed to the anarchists, are unable to separate the police from NATO & the G-8. They don't understand that your job is to protect people & property from them, and that ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT mean that any of you endorse or support the policies of the NATO & G-8 leaders (in fact, my hunch is a majority of you oppose a lot of the agenda the "leaders" will be pushing). Those protesters believe that you, the police, are part of the "machine" that they're protesting, when actually that couldn't be further from the case - you're just the police who happen to work in the city that for some unknown reason chose to host this sure to be dumpster fire.

So why not, let them do what they want to do? McCormick place has insurance to cover any damages it sustains. The political & business leaders who are there will all have their own private bodyguards & security. I'm certain CFD will be on standby in case any of their Molotov cocktails start a serious fire.

Why not just let them do what they want to do down there? I think the police presence will be much better spent in the loop, protecting real Chicagoans who still have to live their lives and go to work during all of this.

Also, in a perfect world, neither the police nor the news media would show up to their protests. These people LIVE for the chance to get into a confrontation with the cops in front of media cameras. They congregate in areas where there are media vans, police vehicles, and police barricades. I believe that if the police & media ignored all of them, they wouldn’t even know what to do. Why shout and scream if there is nobody there to document it?

This could be the start of the National Socialist Security Force we were warned was coming with the Obama administration.

When this is over they could evolve into the "jackbooted thugs" that come after our guns and other liberties.

Don't say it can't happen here. Look what happened in Australia and other British Commonwealth countries. There the people are subjects not citizens. There is a bill in the Illinois Legislature now which would confiscate all privately owned semi-automatic firearms. They would need a group of the Constitution be damned thugs to go out and enforce that.

I would not be surprised if private security companies that have been involved in international work come to Chicago.Blackwater is not out of business, but there are many others. During the terrorist scare right after 9-11, off0-duty cops were making big bucks working security. 25-30 per hr was not unheard of. It will come again.

Once they are done using them after the two weeks of mayhem they will get their pink slips. Do you really think Macy's, Target, Ms. Fields Cookies, etc.... is going to pay a security guard $20 to $30 per hour when the rate now is about $9 to $12 and for off duty police is about $18 to $28 per hour? I don't think so. But at least for those two weeks of mayhem it should be good pay for the vets.

This could be interesting. Do you think combat veterans, especially Marines, are just going to say, "Back sir," when confronted with threats or actual violence from the anarchists? I don't think guys who have actually killed or seen death and destruction first hand are going to be able to kiss the asses of these professional troublemakers as they do their thing. Instead, I think their survival instincts and military training will kick in, and these anarchists are going to have a RUDE awakening dealing with these vets instead of the newer, softer, politically-correct police.

For some reason, nobody seems to be talking about which private security contracting firms will be doing the hiring. No longer in LE, I'm seen reference in the trade e-mails (private investigation and security) to this new program, but nobody seems to have a handle on who's doing what to whom.

Guess I'll go check and see if IL DFPR has a new security contractor's license or Proprietary Security Force registration for ACORN

That's pretty decent money they are talking about, but if Daley/Vanecko and the Azzholes from Acorn are involved, they have to be billing them out at $150 - $200 an hour. I mean, if you can't steal big, why bother?

First I would like to say thank you to all our military men and women who served in the most recent war. You are true American Heros. However, soldiers are not police. Although both have the power to take life. Police Officers and soldiers operate under different rules of engagement. Police Officers are trained to use descreation, restraint, knowledge of the law and a good helping of common sense in performing their duties. Soldiers are trained when confronted with a threat they must eliminate the threat(kill or be killed). Using soldiers recently back from a war zone to work security at G8/NATO does not make good sense. Even if they have been previously trained as Police Officers, they should first undergo a re-integration program before returning to police duty. It would not be in the best interest of the City to use soldiers as security guards. God bless the USA. Everyone stay safe.

The big word you left out is: LEGALLY!

That’s right, Legally. Who’s going to cover the Vet that fucks up one of these stinky hippy protesters? The Vet knocks the ever lovin’ shit out of the protester, do you think that The Gap is going to cover that kids ass when it comes to court? The Apple Store is going to pay for the Lawyer for the former Marine who tosses the anaconda on an anarchist and chokes the shit out of him? F-U-C-K N-O! That Vet will be hung out to dry. And the way this county is, Anita “Beady Eyes” Alverez will hit them with Agg Batt charges.

One guy on here asked “Will they be armed”? Oh, you better hope not! You can’t go shooting into a crowd of UN ARMED people! This is Chicago, kid. The Politicians don’t want you to win. Its all a write-off for them. The Government is picking up the tab; Chicago is going to bill the hell out of Uncle Sam. After all, who is signing the check?

(Hint, He’s black, he’s from the South Side, he now lives in a big white house.)

Wow. Someone who actually knows what they're talking about. I will say this, though. There were no "rear areas" out there and that's why they made the Combat Action Badge.

There's a difference between a trigger puller and a desk dolly, but I'll never take away from anyone who served there. It was a crazy place to be no matter what you did. One who gravitates toward security should be one who kept up a certain skill set no matter the MOS.

Anyone hiring should know that and put the right people in the right spots.

I agree with the one post, I spent 2 years in Iraq working as an IC. I would never want to take away from any servicemen! However, I have run into a ton of green zone warriors. They never left the safety of the fort which was called the IZ or green zone. A true combat vet will not really want to talk about. If they want to hire vets for combat they need to ask where the person was and what they did.
