Aldermen Say "Shut Up!"
- Some of the City Council’s most influential aldermen proposed a crackdown today on crowd participation at council meetings that would ban everything from signs and posters to clapping and booing in the public gallery.
“No demonstration of approval or disapproval from members of the public shall be permitted within the City Council Chambers, including, but not limited to cheering, yelling, clapping, foot stomping, whistling, booing, or jeering, and if such demonstrations are conducted, the gallery or public seating area may be cleared,” states the proposed ordinance, which goes to the Rules Committee for a hearing.
The changes also would prohibit “signs, placards, banners or posters” within the chambers, unless pre-approved by Mayor Rahm Emanuel or the alderman leading the meeting. The sponsors are Alds. Edward Burke, 14th, Richard Mell, 33rd, Carrie Austin, 34th, and Ray Suarez, 31st.
There's billions of dollars being misspent around here. You can't expect the aldercreatures to work under these conditions, can you?
Chicago is about to lose the lawsuit regarding taping of police involved in public interactions, a pretty clear cut First Amendment case. So now they're trying to pass another First Amendment restriction? To go along with the already illegal Second Amendment missteps? Someone want to give a Civics lesson to the Council?

Nowhere else in this country do simple elected officials think they are more above the law than right here in Chicago/Cook County, Illinois.

Ummm, prohibiting signs, banners, boos and shouting at a City Council meeting is probably a totally reasonable "time, place and manner" restriction, well withing the safe zone of the First Amendment.
We may not love our aldercreaters or the Ballerino, but this one should be kosher.

It is difficult to have a meeting of any kind without at least some kind of order being kept.
I don't see how as written it could ever stand up to any kind of constitutional challenge.

I am old enough to remember "Council Wars", when Blago's father in law and political mentor Ald. Dickhead Mel, stood on his city council desk and began shouting and booing at the appointment of another black Mayor. The arrogance of these men to act as if they care about order in the City Council Chambers is beyond belief. We have become a dictatorship, and deserve it because we keep electing these parisites! And never forget; the German People elected Hitler to be Chancellor!

Having lived in the land of Mell-ancholia, im still waiting for the day this bloodsucker has his day in front of satan. Back in the day if you didnt troll for this POS, 8 hrs a day, with ones children in tow, during election time, nothing in the neighborhood got done. Had relatives fall through holes in the sidewalks, gangs proliferated on every corner of the ward, touting mell, as the man of the people, open drug sales, then to add insult to injury, the local gang leader would be given the precinct captain position and his minions would get all the "ward" alooted " city jobs. He, along with burke, suárez, berrios, muñoz, have overstayed there welcome. Its a pity the criminal element, whether it be the politicians or the honor students that hang on the corner, have jaded the good citizen. Voter registration down, voter apathy, and a thieving democratic machine, headed by rahm emmanuel and Daley clan will again make this city more like shang hai, ho chi minh city or moscow. My grandfather ( wwII, korea), uncles (vietnam, 2 tours) are rolling in their graves, knowing how hard they fought for democracy and against the spread of communism, only to have chicago the first communist city of the USA.

Is it not wonderfully odd that just the day before a alderthief was all over the news about getting an ordinance passsed to forbid the CPD and/or the City from turning off cell towers to limit, diminish, or eliminate the ability of G8 Protestors to social network at a time when the city, its citizens, and the first responders, will be greatly at risk of injury and death yet the same alderthieves wish to stifle and censor free speech from the gallery of the city council.
But yet that gang banging alderman munoz,with the family who should be in federal prison for making all the fake id's for illegals,and stealing working CITIZENS Social security numbers. Oh munoz wants total havoc and not to block or jam cell phones and social media bullshit sites! Hey munoz will you be in the from lines with ma bell at your side to help with the phone disruption problems or more than likely you will be with ma Barker and her crew. With morons like this we don't need any alderman at all! Whenever Patrick Fitzgerald calls I would be glad to help load up the buses and march the 50 cowards over to 219 Dearborn the sooner the better. I agree with all the comments. I think the issue we need to be talking about is who can we support as an successor to Mayor Rahm and the alderman. Also, what about term limits. NYC has a two year term limits for their mayor.
Look, I think Chicago is the best city in the world! I was born and raised here and there is no other place I would rather be. However, I think that Chicago has more problems than most other cities. Some of the problems are not the fault of the current administration but the culture of the city. Gangs and violence. Sham corporations billing the city. Alderman on the take. Privatizing government department for profit. Basically just the lost of American freedoms. These issues have plagued the city for sometime now, and we all talk about it (I know I do in my daily interaction with others) but do nothing.
I think the conversation should turn to what can we do to turn the tide.
By the way, I just found this website and I appreciate you perspective.

"YOU ARE ALL UNDER ARREST!", is more what I have in mind.
Make these criminals feel the heat in their offices, make them look over shoulders, make them think their phones are tapped and their staff people are informants.
Tell the truth to the people.
