Shots Fired in 016

  • Chicago police searched for two men who fled after they were involved in an altercation with officers during which shots were fired on the Northwest Side tonight, police said.

The incident began at about 7:40 p.m. in the alley behind the 5300 block of North Natoma Avenue, police said.

The men were being questioned by police, and preliminary reports indicated shots were fired by police in the incident but no one was hit, said [...] Police News Affairs.

A police officer was taken to Resurrection Medical Center with a hand injury, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva. The officer was in good condition.

[....] A weapon was recovered from the scene, according to police.

Be very careful out there.

They need to redistrict 016!

33 square miles is too large of a patrol area to patrol with such limited resources. Give 017 the East border up to Laramie and give 025 the South border up to Irving Park.

Hypothetical situation: 8 or more po's get hurt from any single watch. Are they gonna leave cars down or have guys work their RDOs? They can only shuffle so much manpower from district to district. I say get ready for A TON of OT.

This is just one more indication that the 016th district is going to shit. About 10 to 12 years ago the 016th district slowly turned into garbage. The area from Cicero to Oak Park and Belmont to Irving Park Road has a lot of gangbangers and all sorts of assorted criminals. Plus parts of 016 where we didn't even see much property crime 10 to 12 years ago it has increased dramatically.

This is what you get when manpower is reduced dramatically. 016 is the city's biggest district but now there are about 190 officers assigned to 016.

If places like 016 and other north, and southwest side districts are no longer safe and decent places to live then the good citizens will simply move out. Detroit here we come.

BTW, will News Affairs have an on site newsroom or van with live feeds during G8 ?

I agree that they need to open up spots for these districts. But who is going to get these spots? Officers who are looking to ride out their careers and not get hurt.I Don't blame them but 016 needs more aggressive officers. An officer with 15 years on the job, who is a complete mush and sat behind a desk since he got off probation bid to 016 a few months ago when there were openings. This is what 016 is getting. I'm all for seniority but something needs to change. Every period they should swap officers between 014, 015, 016 and 017 or something along those lines.

Bullshit! I'll believe it when I see it.

I'll bet 3/4ths of your neighbors aren't even registered to vote. It's called VOTER APATHY. Voting is the ONE THING we can do to determine our future, but we can't even get that accomplished.

Recently, the Board of Elections reported that voter registration in Cook County is at its lowest point since World War II, yet, the ONLY time I hear ANYTHING about voter registration drives, its coming out of Operation Push or in the ghetto and/or minority neighborhoods. Why do you think the politicians are so afraid of alienating those communities? Because, unlike our more affluent and "comfortable" neighborhoods, they know that the only public they have to fear is the VOTING public and that, unfortunately, is NOT the conservative crowd.

The only "citizens" the politicians have to worry about are the ones receiving governments checks and freebies because THEY VOTE. They're the only ones with an incentive to get these pukes back in office to continue the gravy train.

You want to accomplish something? Instead of wasting time on some silly little "march" that will accomplish ZERO, find a way to get your co-workers and neighbors registered to vote and take out your frustrations against the worthless elected officials on election day. THAT is the ONLY WAY that they will begin to listen. Barring that, welcome to Socialist America.

Mary O'Connor is by far the worst Alderman the 41st Ward has ever had. Time to dump her catering ass!"

Caters to the builders of Luxury Condos and the Section 8 scum that fill them at our expense.

Let me tell you how an Alderman looks at a block of small ma'n pa stores in your neighborhood.

An Alderman look there and sees maybe a dozen votes more or less. If a developer wants that block the Alderman can get all kinds of legal and not so legal gains. He or she will start to lean on the property owners, inspectors will come by, tickets will be issued, licenses will be suspended, lifelong business' will be ruined and move out. Meanwhile all new sewer and water lines are put in at taxpayer expense.

The developer puts up his developement, fills it with Section 8'ers. The Alderman now has 100-200 more votes and maybe a condo on the side.

P.S. Sears will close two of it's stores, and K-Mart three. Hope they are not in your neighborhood.

You never know when a squad car or an ambulance will go flying by in an emergency. I know I'm gonna be more careful from now on.

Anyway, I was kind of shocked to see they had to send cars from 17 there to assist...I think they may have had to send cars from 25 too. Proof positive that 16 is woefully short of manpower...

When the FOP rep came to our roll call, only after multiple requests I might add, I asked if they would put the residency issue on the table. I was told no, we are only going to focus on pension and that essentially all other issues would be given little or no attn. Call me a simple minded caveman but the majority of the fop manpower focused only on the pension leaves us venerable at every other angle.

This new union representation has done a piss poor job of keeping us informed, answering questions before half the PO's on the dept approach them for answers and fighting for long term items other than pension.

We should not have to sign up for an email newsletter to receive important news or updates use police mail!!! Not everyone has an iPhone with matching ipad we are police officers not IT professionals.

RESIDENCY!!! Chicago is turning into a section 8 SUCK HOLE. I don't give a shit about the addition you pit on your Norwood park or mt. Greenwood home or your property value going down. Not every PO has a 600k house and no children.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but........ The last frontier has been infiltrated. Life as you know it will never be the same. Once the lower class(yes this includes Polish and Russian thugs), section 8, and CHA relocations come to your neighborood it is the beginning of the end.

It starts out with rental properties, mostly apartment complexes.and then trickles down to single family homes. Thats when the domino effect takes place.

Good hardworking people who take care of their property who don't have to live here move to the suburbs. This includes non city employees and retirees. The only people who stay are city employees(forced by residency requirement) and the lower class. Some upper class will choose to stay in their north shore and downtown areas.

Google search the demise of Detroit and Cleveland. Businesses follow suit. They simply can't stay afloat with ghetto customers who chase away people who actually spend money and tip well.

For anyone who says it isn't so, go to the Chicago Historical Museum and look at pictures of 63rd and Halsted in 1950 and how it looks today. Prosperity compared to death.

More bad news.... The Northwestside is more underwater on their homes than any other area in the city. This can verified by numerous internet real estate sources. Zillow, Chicago Business Crains, Realtor magazine, etc..

So unless you paid cash for you your house or never refinanced with cash out options, you are a prisoner to your property in a market where you may never regain your homes mortgaged value.

Any of your $500, $600, $700 homes are now more in the $250, $350, and $450 range. I wish I had better news but it was only a matter of time.

Start planning your exit strategy.

Edgewater alderman contacts cops after alleged gang fight

...dispatch informed the officers patrolling the Edgewater area that 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman wanted them to pay “special attention” to Thorndale and Broadway.

-------------

Ha.. well put a camera in then.

CPD is busy giving the entire south and west sides "special attention"

Camera's are the answer to everything. We can bring the criminals to justice after they bust up everything raping, pillaging and plundering your ward.

BTW did they catch the Red Line robber/sexual assault artists from the other day or are they still reviewing the films? Cameras didn't deter that now did it?

It's not about crime prevention.
There's no money to be made in that. It's about cameras and no-bid city contracts. We can use this crime as fear and fear is a powerful motivator that can be used to extract more taxes. Crime makes for good political photo ops. It keeps the printers presses running so that the alderman can print out flyers telling you to lock your doors and stay inside because it's dangerous out there.

So sick of hearing this argument. "They should lift the residency so I can move out of this shithole". The 16th district is still for the most part just as nice as most surrounding suburbs. On top of that if a ton of city workers move out of 16 and move to Skokie, Niles or Park Ridge the shit will move into 16 and then into Skokie, Niles or Park Ridge in a matter of time. We took this job knowing we had to live in the city. And again there is still a good amount of decent neighborhoods to live in. A few people on this job forget what the real world is like and especially how the real world is now. Ill the good salary, job security and benefits. Cause good luck finding it somewhere else. Finally, if they let us move out and this city really starts to turn to shit in ten or fifteen who do you expect to pay our salaries and pension?

Lived in Lincolnwood, which is filled w/Eastern European guys w/cash businesses with little regard for law or basic civility (don't spit in pool, don't let your pit bull lose in park, don't speed 60 mph on a residential street, etc.) In 90s, there was a Russian guy who was "breaking-in" prostitutes in his basement across from the school (another at local motel); the guy who hit a bike-riding middle-schooler w/his jaguar car who gave the kid $20 and fled; and many two-mercedes in the driveways of too non-conforming new McMansions (not in Towers) while median income hovered at $60,000 and plenty kids qualified for free lunch.

No not true. Offender 1 started on the move again only because he thought the chopper was on him, according to him he heard the chopper and saw the light and believed that they where on him, of course it was good work by the po's on the ground..... Chopper may have not found him but they helped, and k9 as well.

I am sick of pulling up 016 unit summary while working and seeing 4-5 down cars a night. It would be nice after paying $5000 in property taxes to have some proactive policing. Is it too much to ask for a beat car to drive the street once in a while? Here's a story media, I know it isn't being spoon fed, but run with it!!

It is safe to say that this is the worst shape the once proud Chicago Police Department has ever been. Also thank you for the final straw coming in May 2012 that will finish off what's left.

Very good analysis! To that I will add that the city Chicago is making the same mistakes Detroit did. Which is to tax the daylights out of productive citizens. Then those citizens leave and thus leaving a bigger revenue deficit. Then the city decides to raise taxes, fees, revenue streams, etc. even more and then even more people leave.

To the guy that wished he could live in Park Ridge. Today is your lucky day. I just happened to look at a home in Park Ridge. 1008 Austin IIRC. Nice little house. And I do mean little. About the same size as the one I have in Norwood Park. The real estate guy told me that the taxes which are currently 5,200 would probably jump to at least 8K when the house is sold. So there you have it. Take a look.

To those that say 016 is shit. You are probably right about the S/E end. But I'll tell you what. As I said, I live in Norwood Park and it's just fine. The only person I see that's darker than me is my mailman. And to tell you the truth, he's a great guy. Probably better than 99% of my neighbors. If he bought next to me, I'd be a happy camper.

And finally, as someone else posted earlier, we HAD a chance to vote one of our own in as Alderman of the 41st. Richie Gonzalez. A Sgt. in 013. A great guy. But because he's Spanish, no, we couldn't vote for him. Instead we elect another person of Irish descent who from what I hear, hates the Police. So we have no one to blame but ourselves. Wanna see a change? The next time, if their is a next time, you see one of our own, a guy like Sgt. Gonzalez running for office, give him a chance and a vote. On his worse day he's one thousand percent better than what we have now. I don't know about you guys but I for one am tired of the "Machine" telling us who our elected officials will be.

The problem with coverage in 008 and 016 is that we have had 2 leaders who never lived in Chicago and never grew up in Chicago. They have no idea where we live or nor do they care. Weiss and McCarthy just see a map of the city and waiting for the their next job. We need to band together and hold down the home front and demand our elected officials to act.

What mayor COCKSUCKER already knows that the rest refuse to acknowledge, is that DECENT, LAW ABIDING PEOPLE WHO PAY THEIR TAXES AREN'T THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO MARCH EN MASSE AGAINST ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD.

These people are too shy, or have many other things to do with their time to keep the preoccupied with things OTHER than focusing their outrage and making a public display.

Maybe in another 10 years or so when there's NOWHERE left in this shithole city that is now officially WORSE than detroit, the last few remainging taxpayers can cry while fleeing the city that they could have stopped it.

See, THIS is what Emscumuel wants, EVERY TAXPAYER FLEES, THEREBY CAUSING ZERO TAXES TO BE COLLECTED, THEREBY FORCING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND POLICE THE CITY FOR HIM, WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY FOR POLICE OR THEIR RETIREMENT.

All this bullshit is a ploy to make this city so fucking unliveable for decent folk that he can try to blame the police for it, then act like the savior when his friend Obama steps in with his "brown shirt" civilian police force that'll make the entire country foot the bill for shithole citys with rampant crime.

Finally, if they let us move out and this city really starts to turn to shit in ten or fifteen who do you expect to pay our salaries and pensions.

Maybe its not just about crime. Suburbs in my opinion have better schools especially when it comes to early childhood development. Not everyone can afford to send their children to a private institution. I'm certainly in favor of lifting the residency rule.

Relax that was an isolated incident it's not a daily occurence up there. Also stuff can happen anywhere. More likely not to there still. We need some more aggressive officers up there to start putting stops on these little wanna be gang banging jo's. That neighborhood's safety and manpower should not be sacrificed for the south and west side let them keep whacking eachother and getting rid of their own scum. It's been shit there for a long time now and it's not going to change unless the community changes which isn't gonna happen no matter how many baby sitters we send over there. So yes lets keep a couple areas safe enough for us to live and feel safe for our families to go to the park and carry on as we should,so we have some place to escape from the animals. Good job officers, glad your safe and good instinct on pulling that trigger never second guess yourself because if you do it will be too late. Be safe ladies and gents!!! All the rest is BS
