Taste of Failure

  • Chicago restaurants are not exactly chomping at the bit to participate in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to shrink and revamp Chicago’s premier summer festival — by cutting Taste of Chicago from 10 days to five and bumping it to mid-July.

Only 40 restaurants applied to participate for the full five days, precisely the number of openings the city hopes to fill. That prompted the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to extend Tuesday’s deadline until the close of business Friday.

Four years of gunfire, gangs and wilding haven't lent themselves to people wanting to attend either. And no fireworks. It's just disaster piled on disaster.

The Waste of Chicago has outlived its usefulness. Time to replace it with something more fun and less ghetto.

Plenty of great neighborhood food and beer fest to attend all over the city all summer long. The suburbs have some of the best festivals. Let the Taste just die and be done with it. Jane Byrne had the best festivals ever. Fenced in and you paid a modest $5.00 fee to get in. The very best entertainment and food at a reasonable price. The security was outstanding. Harold and Fat Ass Daley destroyed a great event.

I think 'disaster piled on disaster' is overstating things.

The real problem, from a business standpoint, is the shortened time period is even less cost-effective than before.

In the past, many participants have said the costs involved in obtaining, transporting and maintaining the equipment required to run their operations at the Taste are prohibitive. The only way it becomes possible for them - financially - is to spread out that cost over the ten days or so.

Now that the Taste will run only five days, the cost of renting cooktops and refrigeration, paying movers to bring it in and set it up, diverting employees from the actual brick and mortar location, transporting and storing supplies and raw food material, utilities, etc., isn't worth it, just to reach a handful of new customers.

You have to wonder how many of the restaurants that have signed up are at the result of some kind of shakedown or the expectation of some favorite treatment from the city?

I mean a $3,000 dollar license fee and 18% off the top of all their sales goes to the city while the city cuts the number of days in half and pushes the event away from the main 4th of July crowd weekend.

You'd have to be a fool to sign onto that unless you're getting something else in return right???

Like yeah..after you're all partied out from the 4th of July cookouts and firework shows in surrounding areas, let's risk traveling through Chicago's maze of improvised traffic violation writing devices (red-light and speed cams) to enter the Green Zone DUI safety checkpoints -- to pay ridiculous fines and parking fees to the politico's clouted parking meter company -- risk ridiculous towing and impound charges from the politico's clouted towing auto pound operator for fabricated violations because you have an out of state plate...yeah let's risk all that plus, the gangs, shootings, Apple pickings, etc. so that we can buy some overpriced something on a stick from a Chicago restaurant.

Makes sense?

Yeah...I'm in...hahahah. Let's shoot out some street lights after.

World-Class city or Half-Assed city you decide.

Sometimes things just run their course. Shut it down for 3-4 years, then test the waters again. What about this situation--doesn't have 'losing money' written all over it.

Just further evidence that Chicago is lurching toward third world status. All the dumbocrooks think about is how to get their hands on productive citizens' money so they can give it to the bustouts who will re elect them. Time for the working stiffs to take a stand and take this city and country back from the corrupt thieves who take our hard earned funds to perpetuate their incumbency.

OT 22 Feb 12 CPS ordered the closing of dozens of schools and FIRING of hundreds of teachers and support staff! Buddy works part-time security and was told maybe 1 year left for part-time off duty coppers, Retired coppers already told their gone new bosses at CPS wants privatization of ALL employees watch for some Alderman's security company getting a big contract! CPS are turning all the schools over to become charter schools NOT being required to hire back any-one of the teachers or staff just fired and most of ALL NO UNIONS!

Neighbor lost his job along with his wife NOW both out of work! Good show Rahm thats how you bring jos to Chicago.

With the protesting of the children's parents by the hundreds the CPS board ignored all opposition and eliminated the TEACHERS UNION and the agreed signed contract! So RAHM gets his way and what's next the Policemen and Firemans contract coming in JUNE, Fire commissioner HOFF left because he won't agree to closing houses and under staffing the trucks.

To Mike Shields I say just keep what we got NOW we can wait for a couple years if the economy gets better than lets talk, until than don't ask for anything keep what we have including the pensions and just wait it's better than loosing! With all of Rahms lies the Newspapers thinks he walks on water and will loose!

The Waste IS a Waste, of Taxpayers Dollars. It's an outdated concept that costs Taxpayers too much money to police and run. It's time to get rid of all these Fests and Parades that are funded with Taxpayers Dollars. NO Democrats are getting my Vote, or my Family members either. You can stick your high taxes, Corruption, Wasteful Spending, and Entitlement Handouts up your Ass. I'm Fuckin Done. Tired of paying for all the freeloaders in this Welfare State of Illinois, run by the Plantation master Democrats.

Mix it up a little. Just make it a year-round flea market, mountains of smelly baby clothes and silly women's shoes, old, stained mattresses dragged back out of the garbage, broken plastic toys, and junked ink-jet printers.

Sanctuary City...

I just heard....All extra personnel in the merged districts will be made availiable for detsiling to another district. ie. 007, or 011. Read that they will also be availiable to police the G-8 summits, and taste of Chicago. Sort of a defacto summer mobile force.
Merged detective units will be moving soon as hurried up repairs are made to the antiquated buildings. Units x-tra personnell will also be "detailed" out on an as needed basis. This will include G-8, Taste of Chicago, and possibly a patrol level detail in busier districts. So get a blue shirt that fits, and shine those shoes. F.O.P. already ordering more greivance forms. Hang on, its going to be a bumpy ride....
