Cool Photos

These are making the e-mail rounds - a low level pass by a B-52 Stratofortress in the Persian Gulf around 1990:

They have to be what? 30 feet off the water? And from the other side:

Back to our regularly scheduled mayhem.

How could they fly so low? Easy...in the event the flag had gone up and they went on The Mission, nearly the entire flight across the Soviet Union would have been made at that level.

It happened in early 1990 in the Persian Gulf, while U.S. carriers and B-52s were holding joint exercises. Two B-52s called the carrier (USS Ranger) and asked if they could do a fly-by, and the carrier air controller said yes.

When the B-52s reported they were 9 kilometers out, the carrier controller said he didn't see them. The B-52s told the carrier folks to look down. The paint job on the B-52 made it hard to see from above, but as it got closer, the sailors could make it out, and the water the B-52 jets were causing to spray out. It's very, very rare for a USAF aircraft to do a fly-by below the flight deck of a carrier.

But B-52s had been practicing low level flights for years, to come in under Soviet radar. In this case, the B-52 pilots asked the carrier controller if they would like the bombers come around again. The carrier guys said yes, and a lot more sailors had their cameras out this time.

My favorite movie about the Cold War, and the B-52 is
Dr. STRANGELOVE (or I How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb).

Slim Pickins as Major Kong the Aircraft Commander.

Peter Sellers in three rolls, The President, Captain Mandrake RAF., and Dr. Strangelove himself.

Look for a young James Earl Jones.

I'd tell you more, but I don't want to spoil it for our younger readers. A great dark comedy ****, see it.

P.S. What is the nickname for the B-52 Stratofortress?

The BUFF.

For "Big Ugly Fat Fuc#er". (or "fellow" if you prefer.)

It's flying low and fast to avoid detection and danger.

If you look closely, the name under the cockpit window reads "Captain J. Weis"

We use to build great stuff in this country.

As they say, It may be your daddy's airplane but it's not your daddy's Air Force.

Look up the interesting photo of Paul Tibbets IV, a B52 pilot and his dad Paul W. Tibbets USAF Ret. the pilot of the Enola Gay which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Then there is the story of the B52 flying out in the middle of nowhere and is met by a couple of hotshots in F-18 Hornets.

The Hornet drivers call out, "Hey big fella, let's see ya do this." The two tiny aircraft proceed to do a series of loops, barrel rolls and fly circles around the big lumbering bomber.

"Really nice." says the B-52 pilot, "Let see you do this." The big bomber just keeps flying at its steady pace and after several minutes the pilot says, "How did you like that?"

"What was that?"

The B-52 Pilot says, "I got up stretched my legs, went to the bathroom, made a sandwich and got a cup of fresh coffee, talked to my Flight Engineer and came back and sat down. Let's see you do that."

"Have a nice day big guy." and the two F-18s zoomed off.

I believe that is the USS Ranger CV-61. Long ago decommed. Her flight deck is around 55 feet. Since the planes engines are not pushing up behind them, some water, I'd say they were at about 40-45 feet. Still mighty low for anyone that does not train at that level so they don't auger in.So, they must have had mucho flight time att hat height. And as said earlier, I wish you all out yonder in Chicago could call one in for a bomb run on the bad guys. Especially, say over the projects.

B-52H
The B-52H had the same crew and structural changes as the B-52G. The most significant upgrade was the switch to TF33-P-3 turbofan engines which, despite the initial reliability problems (corrected by 1964 under the Hot Fan program), offered considerably better performance and fuel economy than the J57 turbojets.[141][190] The ECM and avionics were updated, a new fire control system was fitted, and the rear defensive armament was changed from machine guns to a 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon (later removed in 1991–94).[189] A provision was made for four GAM-87 Skybolt ballistic missiles. The aircraft's first flight occurred on 10 July 1960, and it entered service on 9 May 1961. This is the only variant still operational. A total of 744 B-52s were built. The last production aircraft, B-52H AF Serial No. 61-0040, left the factory on 26 October 1962.[192]

Thats a call for artillery. A call for fixed wing/rotary support would be in the form of a 9 line.

From Dr. Strangelove:

Peter Sellers, as The President:
"Gentlemen, you can't be fighting in here! This is the war room."

On the subject of flying low

Slim Pickins, as Major Kong: "We got more holes in us than a horse trades mule and if we was a flyin' any lower we'd need slay bells on this thing. One good thing, at this altitude they may harpoon us but they ain't gonna pick us up on no radar screen."

Sarcasm noted: all B-52 Aircraft Commander/Pilots are at least Majors due to the heavy responsibility being on the trigger of Armageddon.

Now if Rahm and Gerry McCarthy became in charge of the USAF, they would be commanded by sergeants, short on fuel, dummy bombs, avionics and computers that don't work, ground crews laid off and constantly grounded unless sent off on useless missions while they court the enemy.
