New Officers

Just so you know, 47 recruits graduated the Academy Wednesday . The first class in how many months? Or is it years now? Rahm welcomed them all aboard:
  • The mayor welcomed a new class of Chicago police graduates Wednesday morning, the first in nearly a year.

The last time there was a class graduating from Chicago's police academy was May of last year, and it comes as Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the police department tries to deal with gang violence throughout the city.

But there's a downside:

  • But, as 50 officers are added to the force, the Fraternal Order of Police reminds the public that about 600 officers leave every year to retirement and resignation.

But we know something the FOP doesn't know, and we're going to share it with our readers, exclusively!

  • Each of the 47 graduating recruits, every single one of them, has....

    wait for it....

    SUPER POWERS!

That's right! Some can punch through brick walls. Others can outrun Wile E. Coyote. We have it on the highest authority that at least a dozen of them can fly! And if the rumors are to be believed, at least two can turn themselves invisible.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone, but with recruits like these working "in the box," we fully expect crime to drop even more in the coming months. They will be the pride and joy of McNewStrategy, fully versed in Comp-Speak and impervious to sarcasm in any form.

Good Luck kids.

That's 47 folks who would've been better off directing people to the plumbing section at Home Depot when asked "Where can I find a roll of Teflon tape?" or loading and unloading 40 foot dropframes at UPS.

I wouldn't recommend this 'career' to my worst enemy, but I guess the pay ain't bad once you make it off probation. Too bad the negatives greatly outweigh the positives in this farce of a circus.

Good luck, folks. You're gonna need it..

run new guys....run. dont take this job. Its gonna seem like the greatest job in the world for the first three or four years then it happens. the beefs, lawsuits suspension days etc start rolling in. You ask your sgt what you should do... youve got to answer to all of these. He tells you, just answer the questions.. Your on your own kid... So, all the hard charging, m'fing everyone and runnin and gunnin now got you in trouble... sure, your good by this time at arresting guys and finding a bad guy but now you dont know how to get yourself out of trouble. You start to go to ipra, iad and depositions for lawsuits. yep, its all starting to get a little nerve racking now. By five years your lawsuits that are two years old are still going and they just keep on coming for no reason. Your still getting hammered by civil lawyers and you still riding a beat car.. or, maybe your on a tac team now. So, you kind of want to slow down a little bit but you cant. Dont forget, numbers numbers numbers.. stay in that box. you got a head outside the box???? nope, go back out and get a head in the box. so you go out and you start sandbagging people...everyday. You dont care, you just want to get your head and hide because this job is nonsense. you hit 6 or seven years on. You might be going to trial now on a few of your lawsuits... Sitting in a federal court room is not fun. You will be stressed out for a week and not be able to sleep. maybe you win the case maybe you loose the case..either way you vow to yourself not to do that stupid sh*t anymore. you want to slow down but hey, go get those heads... if not you dont get anymore plays on the tac team.. you wont keep your spot.. now go out and sandbag someone so you can keep that spot. pretty soon you could care less.. A bag of weed, a hype with a pipe, a pisser it doesnt matter. Its all a head to you. Its not real crime or real criminals and you could care less. You want your head for the day and thats it. Youve now become a CB number generator and thats it. You are now part of the smoke and mirrors. You are embarassed when you come in the lock up infront of other coppers because you brought in two 60 year old hype drinkers and pissers... oh well, now 9 years comes around and you are salty, bitter, have been used and abused, sued, suspended and have a terrible attitude. You finally say f it. Im going back to the watch. You go the watch and dont do a damn thing. You know you should, you kind of want to but you dont. You have now become a dog. Your own worst enemy. You use to be a hard charging running and gunning stud. but, the numbers, bosses and politics has finally got a hold of you. Your a broken man who hates everyone and everything.... and you have only 20 years left... welcome to the new cpd kids. Oh and by the way, we will have to start swiping in next month...

Typical Rahmination.

One-shot federal grant used to create himself a photo-op, quiet the TV audience down for a day or two.

Who pays for these troops next year?

You get one guess.

The same people who paid this year -- the taxpayers.

Remember -- THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "FEDERAL MONEY."

"Or "state, county, or city money."

None of these entities produces anything.

Every penny they give out was once someone else's dollar -- they absorb the other 99 cents in "administrative costs," &c.

DEATH CITY: Homicides in Chicago soar; 120 dead in 2012, 500 wounded...

When will the world wake up and realize that Chicago is a warzone and good citizens are being victimized every second by savages whos only purpose is to scheme and plot their next victim. CPD, you guys do a great job and I wish the national media would recoginize that. You guys bust your asses with little to no resources. Unlike NYPD, who, it seems, gets every toy possible handed to them under the cloak of "terrorism" to fight crime, you guys fight the true terrorists....GANGS!From what I've heard you guys have little to no equipment, resources and manpower. Why won't the media pickup on this and ask "where's the money". Not to pick on any department but it's pretty evident NYPD, LAPD, Dade County, Miami, etc., always seem to have the tools to fight crime while you guys get the shaft. I wish you guys well and thank you for your service.

If you check back, the article will undoubtedly say "While overall, crime is trending downwards, killings are up 60%."

Everything is supposedly "trending" the other way from what you see on the street every day with your own two eyes, so it's OK.

This is the New Chicago Style of writing, and it's caught on nationwide.

To our new brothers and sisters in blue, welcome.

If you have clout, stop reading this, it doesn't pertain to you.

To the rest of you who will not be thrown any bones over the course of your careers, know this,

Your chance of getting divorced is higher then the norm,

Your life expectancy is less then the average,

You WILL get physically hurt, it's just a matter of when, how bad, and how often,

You will accumulate CR number's regardless of how well you do your job,

You will probably get sued, more then likely, multiple times,

For years, your furlough will be in Jan, Feb, Mar, Oct,and Nov,

On Christmas, you work, on Thanksgiving, you work, on Easter, you work, News Years eve, you work,
for many birthday parties, you work, many other family functions, you work,

You will see incompetent P.O.'s get promoted up the ladder, when these officers cannot pass a test on their own, they will be promoted by "merit". On the C.P.D. "merit" and clout mean the same thing.

If you have qualified for minimum social security benefits by working full time for ten years or more, know this, one of the pleasures of getting a gov pension is that your soc sec benefits are cut on average by 60 percent. Yes, you heard correct, 60 percent. Thank that stamp stealing ex-inmate Dan "rot in hell you thief" Rostenkowski.

You do not control the investments of the pension contribution that comes out of every pay check. This money might be given to the Mayor's nephew to invest.

The number of police officers are way down, so you have less back up regardless of your assignment. You will know that we are very understaffed, but you will hear the Mayor and Superintendent tell the press things that are nonsense, but never get called on it.

Last but not least, "they" will try to pay you less pension benefits, and make you work longer to qualify for one.

If none of this bothers you, then welcome to the C.P.D. we are glad to have you. If any of this bothers you, quit now and go have a normal life.

Not exactly sure but what the jungle drums say it seems that Captain Hootan Bahamajama (whatever) left Mass Transit and is back at his old spot at the Medical Section. His job would be to root out all medical abusers.

That would leave the bi-polar Lieutenant D.S. in charge of the Mass Transit Unit. His job would be to drop morale and chase all working cops into districts like 004, 007 and 011 leaving only the true masochists and the few KMA Club members. Bad? Ask 013.

To all you new officers welcome to the greatest show on earth... I ask of you only one thing - totally forget what you have learned in the academy, you ask why well very simple, there is some people in there that have not seen the street in quite some time and others who where or are dogs and are there because of clout. Given the changes to their pensions and the prospect of more to come, I would recommend they look to move to another Department as soon as they can.

Go to another state and get a better pension. Look at any other California Department. They can earn a 90 percent pension. Here you will get 75 percent. CPD wont get the same cost of living increases. They will have to work until they are 55. Elsewhere they can retire earlier. Look at NYPD, retire after 20 years.

They can earn better health care benefits. They can also live outside their Department's jurisdiction and have access to better schools and a lower cost of living.

You can start here, but in the long run they can and will do better financialy for themselves and their family moving elsewhere.

So I was at 26 and cal today. When I went to sign out, I handed my slip to the guy in the sign in room. He then studied my slip and proceeded to mark a tally on a sheet of paper. One tally was for cases that got continued and the other was for officers that did not testify. I asked him what was up with the tallies and he replied exactly like this "the superintendent is trying to figure out what exactly happens in this building. Just another way for him to cut overtime. I don't know how he's gonna do it, but he's trying to figure it out."

Hey superintendent, what goes on in that building is called court. This is part of the American justice system that involves criminal cases going to trial to determine whether or not someone will be convicted of a crime.

The idea factory running this department has no idea why officers who have good activity are still working. The only reason is overtime/court. There are no other incentives on this job anymore. A guy who works his but off makes the same per hour as a guy who does nothing. The only incentive to work, especially for older coppers is overtime. Without overtime I will never make another proactive arrest. When I was new on the job, I hustled cause I had something to prove. Now I do it for the extra cash. May as well just go work days and spend more time with the family.

Sorry, for the long post, needed to vent. Rant over.

These won't help the field at all! These were the positions paid for by the CTA, in order to get rid of special employment. In fact, expect bids to open up for 47 positions at Mass Transit right after NATO. And btw, that is less officers on the transit system every night than we got through special employment. So with the 47, we get less protection on the CTA, and no new help in the field. They deserve absolutely no credit for this dumb decision.

That's really something, coming as it does from a violent, brain-damaged wild animal who served three years in prison for the 1991 rape of a "Miss Black America" beauty pageant contestant.

Look out, retirees in neat little bungalows...

These people will do absolutely anything. Destroy State Line and Fisk and Crawford power plants so we'll be ready when our aging nuclear reactors have to be shut down.

We'l have Commonwealth Vanecko by then.

ZIMMERMAN STRIKES AGAIN!

Mom, 1-year-old daughter shot while sleeping: 'A terrible thing'

By Rosemary R. Sobol Tribune reporter

11:59 a.m. CDT, April 12, 2012

"Tonisha Allen and her 1-year-old daughter Jaliyah were asleep when someone fired shots at the small house in the West Pullman neighborhood early this morning, striking the child in the head and Allen in the leg, according to police and relatives.

“The bullets came through the house -- they came through the wall,’’ said Allen's mother, Tina Cornell. “I jumped out of bed and ran in there and checked the baby and she’d been hit in the head.’’

"Jaliyah was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was stablized and undergoing surgery. She was listed in serious condition.

“We are hoping for the best but, as far as we know, there’s damage to her brain,’’ Cornell said."

The problem...you wanted something. You worked because you wanted a reward. When the reward never came, you stopped working.

And so began your sorry path.

Police work is ugly, not glory. The people you meet, even those you help, are mostly assholes. No one appreciates you, especially when you do good work.

The best advice you'll ever....when you decide you want this job and before you take it, never again watch a TV police show or see a movie about police. They're all bullshit and only warp your expectations.

The only reward you will ever get is that you will know you did a good job. No one else will ever know. If that's not good enough, don't take the job.

Find a partner with the same work ethic and have fun. "If they can't take a joke, f*ck it." (You will figure out who 'they' are). Do what you think is right while tempering it with your professionalism. If a boss orders u to do something, ask "is that order." Have your own back because very few others will. OT, if you get a chance take a look at the Drudge report at one of it's headlines reads as follows:

DEATH CITY: Homicides in Chicago soar; 120 dead in 2012, 500 wounded...

---------------------------

No, no-no stop looking over there and look over here at the overall crime rate being down 10%.

I'm not sure what falls under the definition of 'overall crime' or what time frames the crime numbers are being compared against to come up with a 10% decline. I imagine the statistical game is similar to the last attempt to compare 911 response times to those that were recording during a record blizzard.

Nevertheless the mayor says look "I've been mayor for 10 months and overall crime is down 10%" and that's all you need to know I guess.

Well mayor you've also been mayor for just 10 months and homicides are up 60% so let's give the credit where the credit is due.

Yeah, we know..

don't look over there, look over here hahaha.

Oh and when the questions get tough and you don't like them. Go to your own list of scripted Q and A to get your political positive spin out.

----------

....Asked whether he can reassure Chicagoans that his policies work despite the surge in violence in the first months of 2012, Emanuel wondered why some of the initiatives he and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy have undertaken were not done earlier.

"The question is -- you can say 'Are you doing it right?' -- the question is, why were those policies not done before? Why was it the police department was not organized to have a gang audit to do pro-active efforts to intervene on reprisal shootings that are driving the numbers? We're doing that," Emanuel said.

The mayor pointed to an earlier curfew he pushed for young children, his effort to reassign police officers from desk jobs to patrol and other changes he has backed in an effort to lower crime.

He also said he didn't want to dwell on the statistics, then pointed out overall crime is down and he has been mayor less than a year.

"I don't want to get into statistics, because these are human stories. As I just told you, we have -- overall crime is down 10 percent," Emanuel said. "I've been in office 10 months."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-mayor-emanuel-on-crime-stats-20120412,0,3452682.story

-----------------------

No mayor. "The question is -- you should ask", is what we're doing working? When it comes to homicides so far the answer is a big fat NO and the statistics that you don't want to get into speaks volumes.

Woodlawn Mental Health Center Closing.

How is this going to make the community safer. CPD safer?

The mayor just got done touting his success as mayor with his pro-active policing of crime.

How is closing these mental health centers pro-active?

You know damn well when some of these people get cut off their meds CPD is going to have to deal with it resulting in increased prison cost and maybe some E-R room visits.

The city has millions of dollars to build a north side park with jogging paths and bird baths while inflating some politicians ego but there's no money to keep a mental health clinic open that makes the community safer.

We have to wonder what officers and how many of them will end up becoming the martyrs, the statistics of this decision as they soon face some of these people gone off their meds.

Sending CPD to enforce the clinic shut down...not much different then Bin Laden sending his own troops on a suicide mission isn't it?

Just following orders. Orders that increase CPDs own job risk.

Isn't there enough risk already?

We hope we're wrong but the stats say otherwise.

No, no-no look over here at the 47 new coppers coming in. Don't look over there at the 470 coppers that are leaving.

Look at the new jobs we're creating.

This has to make yet another consecutive month of the "much needed" job creation. Don't you know?

Don't look over there at the percent of utilization of the Illinois workforce that shows just to get back to the employment level that we had in Nov 2000 we need another 500,000 or so more jobs.

Don't look over there at the number of jobs created over the last year and do the math which shows that at the rate of this current marvelous job growth created by the mayor and the governor we are looking at 10~15 years if we are lucky before we are back to having a job market like we had in Nov. 2000.

To the new PPO's, Welcome. Being a patrolman in this city is one of the most challenging jobs there is. You will experience and see things the average person never will. There will be moments when you will laugh, and a few that make you cry. Life as you knew it no longer exists. You will miss spending a multitude of holidays and events with your family, freinds and loved ones. it will take a toll on your personal relationships and your life as a whole. Try to find a balance between your work and personal life. Spend as much time with your family as possible. Especially your children. They grow up fast. Develop a life and interests OUTSIDE of this job. It will help to keep you sane as your career progresses. Take EVERY promotional exam offered. Clout and merit mean a lot on this job, but I know a few coppers who got lucky and beat the odds. "You gotta be in it, to win it." If possible, take advantage of tuition reembursement. In this era of expensive student loans, it's a pretty good deal. If you already have a Bachelors, get a Masters. it could help you if you decide to make a career change. But most importantly, LEARN this job. When i came on almost twenty years ago, my FTO told me "To be a competant patrolman, it takes at least five years." Be a sponge. Ask questions. Get comfortable handling homocide, traffic crash investigations and DUI's. Learn to write good paper. You will live or die by what you put in a report. But first and foremost, BE SAFE. Make sure you and your partner go home the same way you came to work. NOTHING else is more important. Good luck and may you have a safe and productice career.

The above was probably THE most accurate depiction of the life of a Chicago police officer. I'm at the 7 year mark and I'm right about where he predicted for that time frame. Run and gun and have fun and then get burned by doing your job and get the CR's and bull shit law suits, etc. Stuck living here in the city, and then people bitch at you saying to quit if you don't like the job. The job is a lot different now than even 7 years ago when I came on. 7 years is a tear drop in the ocean as far as time is concerned, but if I do 20 years, I'm almost half my career and things are rapidly changing on this job. It's depressing that you can't get positions based on time and merit and it's all about what color you are, who you know, and how much ass you can kiss. I still like the guys I work with and I like some of the bosses, but it's a different ball game, the general public can't stand the police, the media can't stand the police, and it ends up where a good cop gets salty and bitter from being screwed over so much. Losing out on the pension and seeing other departments pass us up in resources and incentives doesn't give me the warm fuzzy to go out and try to save the world. I put in an honest days work, but even then you get questioned. It's thankless also. Pet officers have sergeants put in for honorable mentions and dc's for just about anything, but because a humble cop doesn't go brag about what they do in a day and make a deal about it to get the honorable, they don't get squat. I had ONE sergeant, a tact sgt, who would faithfully put in paper for you to get an award for all good pinches, and you wouldn't have to go seek him out to do it, he would just do it because he appreciated good work when it was in order. The wife always asks if I'd go to another department, but why would I want to do that after paying 7 years into a pension here? I didn't come on the job young, so it's not like I'm going to start all over somewhere else. Just have to stay here and suck it up and make the best of it and hope things change for the better. But that above post really hit home and sits true to most of the people I know who have any real time on the job.

When Rahm was running for mayor he said I'm going to hire 1,000 more police officers". It looks like he really meant 1,000 less offices. Our budget strength is now 12,200. That's 1,300 less. But who's counting, or who's keeping track, and who cares.

OT heard a rumor that DIF numbers were high on 2010 lost time audit. Increase was questioned and response was department is getting older and more parents/grand parents are passing away. This was logical but a sample was asked to be taken and one case came up with same grandmother dying twice in 2010, further investigation revealed that same grandma died in 2009 as well. I guess she won't be dying this May during NATO.

On the new mention of several shot and the excuse is that the community has to call and make the police aware of who's carry guns! And we can say parents need to know what their children are doing ,not the one getting shot but the one doing the shooting, basically all poor excuses, the fact is parents raise their kid poorly and the community turns their heads and are afraid to come forward and that's what the police are for,to seek out criminals and arrest them, our communities and the safety of our communities are at risk and we blame parents and not the Mayor for not hiring more and more police until the numbers are strong and the job gets done! Wake up public, money and budget cuts and, all about the dollars spent is a big trick, cause if your safety is important and it is then money doesnt matter,it's priority, this city and it's safety should be vitally important to you and the mayor!

They should've TRANSFERRED Lt D.S. from 013 to the tubes. he put in a PAR form to go to 015 but the tubes would be a better fix for him. and if you think this new LT. was sent there to make life miserable, you obviously have not had to deal with THE 3RD WATCH Lt IN 013. Then again ,these Lt's must all be related - Lt. D.D, D.S and now lemer !!!

Bad? Ask 013.

4/12/2012 02:17:00 PM

SORRY !! D.S. is still in 013. although it's been told to everyone that he put in a par form to go tro 015. although now to think about it, mass trransit would be a good move.. Sorry to you all in mass tansit, we dont wish bad on you but EVERYONE in 013 would just like to see the good LT go somewhere where he would fit in...... based on his Bi Polarness antics... somewhere dark and gloomy ( picture them old movies of mad scientists( except D.S. is more like a nut case ) where them people in those movies with the white jackets were in dark lab's with boilingwater and ** you get the picture ) WE JUST WANT HIM TO GO AWAY !!!

Don't listen to some of these bitter people, this job isn't that bad, yes there is some bad things about the job but that's going to be at any job. What job will pay this good, and you are pretty much your own boss for 90% of your tour of duty. You can have so much fun, or you could let a few things bother you and have a long miserable career. If anything some of these bitter cops should be saying thank you, you are not only adding to the much needed help, you are also making our seniority go up. So THANK YOU for that, I hope you enjoy your career, and try not to let bitter cops bring you down.

No, Pops. You're WRONG. Things were MUCH different during the 35 years you put on the job. You didn't say when you retired, but I'd wager you caught a good number of years you thought you'd never see this job turn into. I've been on over 20 and I concur with the poster that says Home Depot would be a better choice of career.
