60 Days???

  • The last former Chicago police officer to be sentenced as part of one of the worst misconduct scandals in the department’s history was given just 2 months in prison today for taking part in three robberies while a member of the once-elite Special Operations Section.

Keith Herrera faced up to 13 years in prison but had his sentence sharply reduced because he cooperated with federal authorities, wearing a wire to secretly record then-Officer Jerome Finnigan as he plotted the murder of another officer he suspected of cooperating with authorities.

Finnigan, identified by authorities as the scheme’s ringleader, was sentenced last year to 12 years in prison for the murder-for-hire plot.

Finnigan was identified as the "ringleader" because he kept his mouth shut. Herrera avoided that title by talking as soon as he got caught dirty. Make no mistake about it, Herrera was the dirtiest of the bunch. Those in the know remember the stories from 008 about this turd.

Every one of these goofs deserved to be fired and some deserved jail. But the disparity between 12 years and 60 days? Finnigan's scalp hangs on someone's wall while Herrera's is selling used cars in the 'burbs. We aren't sure this meets the definition of "justice."

Same old bs from the FEDS . Feed the rats and they get fat. You turn on others even if your as guelty and we will repay you. Thatsthe only way they know how to work a case.

The thing about justice is it isn't fair. I knew everyone of those guys and while I left that unit in 1999 it was no secret they were going end up in trouble.

The biggest injustice is listening to sherry and Suchocki constantly talk about how they were innocent and framed by IAD. And they say this stuff to PO who were well aware of what those guys were doing. Look, you two morons beat your case because "the victim" (a shitbag dope dealer) couldn't make an ID. Good, you win and that's cool. But let's not start talking about being framed. Let's talk about being extremely lucky!!!

It just goes to show who runs the federal courts it the FBI. The courts give the sentence that the FBI wants not what the guidelines or the judge may personally feel is just. Look at John HARRIS he snitched an got the same as HERRERA. Fast Eddie VRDOLYAK told them to go fuck themselves and he still got short time until the FBI cried to the stepping stone federal political hacks in the U.S. Attorneys office who cried and told the judge to give him more time and that got poor Fast Eddie re-sentenced to more time. By giving a lighter sentence for cooperation shows that the courts are working for the government and not independent like the three branches of government are portrayed in St Rita text books
Lil KEITH HERRERA is just like any other criminal RAT. Once cornered he denies everything then a little pressure he gives up his friends in true RAT style and tells the not so street smart FBI he only did three rips when he really did ten to fifteen. Now he is trying to tell everyone that he is the hero of the episode. No, Keith your not a hero your a pussy, rat, little bitch and every time you see a passing squad car think that you couldn't make the grade to be the real police and do the job honestly for 20 yrs you don't have the backbone, but just think you don't need one to be an FBI agent maybe they will let you join them since you are now reformed!

Does anyone remember when Herrera gave a televized interview before any of the pleas and Finnigan's trial?

Herrera was so contrite accepting that he had done wrong and was very sorry. The kicker was when he told the interviewer that after everything was over he would like to be able to address classes of recruits in the police academy to help them avoid things that would turn them into crooked cops like him.

Herrera must have seen the movie Prince of the City where a bunch of big city cops were involved in narcotic shakedowns, etc. and were caught up in all kinds of b.s. At the end of the movie it showed the leading character(Treat Willimas) talking to a bunch of new recruits in the academy and some walking out on him.

Of course as there are no new classes in the academy and probably none planned for a while, Herrera will just have to go on selling used cars.

P.S. Herrera, if your chance comes please do NOT wear a plaid sport coat.

Let me see if I understand this- the guy who tries to hire somebody to kill one of our own somehow becomes the "hero" in this disgusting debacle, but the equally corrupt and sleazy little weasel who saves his skin by wearing a wire is now the "worst of the worst".

The "Blue Wall of Silence" is B.S., and any body who subscribes to it isn't much of a COP. While I agree that the discrepancy in sentencing was wrong- Finnigan (loud-mouthed bully that he is) had the chance to do the same thing, but no...he spent his time trying to have one of his own killed.
Glad to be Retired

That's what happens when the prosecutor trades leniency for information. The top guy knows the most about all the bad shit, so he gets a sweet deal for selling out his crew. Why take down one kingpin when taking down a whole bunch of foot soldiers looks better in the press?

I had Keith work for me on a couple of occasions when I was a Sgt. at Voluntary Special Employment, and I found him to be a liar and arrogant punk whom I asked to never return to our Watch. Yet anyone who followed this tragic chain of events must realize that this could not have happened without supervisors knowing and failing to do their jobs, and one has to ask: WHERE ARE THE BOSSES? Oh, they all walked away, some even got promoted and some are enjoying their six figure pensions! ALL OF THESE "CRIMINALS" WERE PROTECTED AT EVERY LEVEL INCLUDING IAD. I doubt if any officer reading this could have gotten a fraction of the CRs that these guys got without facing a very long suspension or termination. Yes these guys committed crimes, but their bosses knew and let it happen, because they wanted the Heads and the guns. Once you violate one law, it is easy to violate the next one, until you look in the mirror and face the criminal; that YOU have become. And bosses like Frank R., and T. and Debra along with Sgt. Big Head and Lt. J.; were either stupid or looking the other way. If a team of white guys in uniform bring in more guns than any other Unit in the City including the Gun Teams, then SOMETHING IS WRONG. Or, you need to have these guys give a class and explain their technique to every other cop in the City. The City is quietly paying millions of dollars in settlements and lost dozens of cases over these morons so they want to let it die quietly. Instead of doing the right thing and disciplining and prosecuting the bosses. And I am not afraid to say who I am because NOBODY can deny that what I am saying is the truth. Rick Aztlan, CPD Retired Sgt.#1575. And everyone out there be warned, because some of these bosses are still out there and their leadership contributed to careers and lives being ruined. Because as bad as this scandal was, some of these young officers were the best of the best and it was an honor and pleasure to know them and to work with them.

The best part of this whole story is the fact that all the good officers that were in Sos were punished and forced into the behavioral program, forced to see shrinks and told by the department that they were bad officers and shouldnt be on the job. Yet every boss that was there or had something to do with it has been double or triple promoted. Dugan, Guilliford, Kirby, Tobias. Im not saying they did or didnt do anything wrong. But all the PO'S, many who never even talked to any of the dirty PO's were punished for no reason.

It's ashame what happened after they joined SOS. I wasn't there and I lost touch, but if it happened to them, it could've happened to any one of us. Keith was always cocky, but he appeared to mean well. Anyone that knew John, knew that he was a stand up guy. Like I said, I knew them early on. I don't know how or why things changed, but I saw some good coppers that got the job done.

It's just crazy to me that something like this happened. I try to put myself in there shoes and wonder if I would've gotten caught up as well. Afterall, if everyone else was in on it, why say anything? These are your guys, your team. We have each others backs-right? Guilt would definitely have set in, but I don't know if anyone would've made the right choice and said anything. Think about your fellow coppers and how we stick together-right or wrong.

I know all that came out about these SOS guys. It's absolutely disgraceful. We still haven't recovered as a department. I still see eager go-getters and I still haven't seen the type of go-getters I saw in these two guys early on. I know I'm going to get slammed for this because all that has come to light, but I felt the need to say something.

RIP John H. Your smile will forever remain in my memory of you. May God have mercy on you.

In a somewhat related the system is broken story. Remember the disabled Chicago cop in Iowa with the pit bull service dog that the city says is banned and must go.

Well...no mercy for you officer. The law is the law and we must respect the law. The case now goes to Federal court. Isn't that nice?!

AURELIA, IA -

An update on the retired Chicago cop fighting to keep his service dog, Snickers.

FOX 44 introduced you to Jim Sak in December 2011, and now the battle for man's best friend is going all the way to Federal Court.

Jim Sak didn't know what to do when the city of Aurelia, Iowa told him he had to get rid of Snickers back in December.

As his case heads for Federal Court Jim's not only fighting for his best friend; He's fighting for his life.

"The dog is my life saver," said Jim Sak, talking to the media on Thursday.

For months now Jim, a retired and disabled Chicago cop and Vietnam veteran, has been fighting to keep his service dog: Snickers.

Soon after moving to Aurelia, Iowa in November 2011 the city said Snickers had to go.

Like the right to free speech, right to freedom of assembly, right to bear arms, the immigration act, the discrimination act, the disabilities act is just another illusion -- a law overturned by mayoral dictator city ordinances as the political apparatus picks and chooses the winners and losers.

Oh well what goes around comes around I guess.

Plenty of guys and gals in those units who worked their tails off. Don't generalize and put everyone in the same category. Sure, there were plenty of calls made, but i knew no one. I worked because it made the day go by and I actually enjoyed it. And the reason I went is not for the perks, it was closer to my house then where I was and i kinda like seeing my family instead of driving for an hour. If I was Herrera and meant what I said, I would move away, change my name to save face to his dad and just stop any dreams of police connection. Go away! Now only you destroyed a unit that used to take hundreds of guns per week but your family, your fathers legacy and became a rat. Now for a long time, US in the job have to endure the embarrassment they brought with their rogue ways. Go away and never look back.

SCC its called co-operating Wearing a wire which isnt easy and not wanting to see other coppers killed

Even Ray Charles can see that

WRONG! It's called creating a situation that didn't exist to give yourself the opportunity to save your own ass.

Jerry was wrong. He was a thief, amongst other things, but it's pretty much well documented that it wasn't his idea to kill anyone, much less the other coppers. You are either one Keith's family members or a complete mental midget. Possibly both.

The most important thing here is that Keith did the right thing. He fessed up to his crime and didn't eat out any bosses. MT, DK and JB all stay squeeky clean.

For your contrite and selfless act we shall reward you with a 60 day sentence. Now go on with your life while we just keep cashing those exempt checks.

Grossinger? Interestingly they hired another embarrassment to the force, Sean Ryan. Another talker who got a sweetheart deal from the Feds while his friend did time while making friends with Gov Ryan.

I remember Keith early on before he and his partner, RIP John, went to SOS. You could never tell me in a million years that these guys were dirty. They were some good coppers that enjoyed working. They worked their ass off and the love for the job showed.

I don't know how or why things changed, but I saw some good coppers that got the job done. . . .
----------------------------------
None of them were ever "good" or "stand up" guys. Even the two guys who got away with it. They all thought they were high and mighty and were arrogant jagoffs to everyone around them because they were "Elite". What they all were, were CRIMINALS!! Dont ever forget that you were and are lying thieving cowards who were never the REAL Police

If a team of white guys in uniform bring in more guns than any other Unit in the City including the Gun Teams, then SOMETHING IS WRONG.

[yea, what’s “wrong” here is why the f*ck are people still out there working in this environment?]

Or, you need to have these guys give a class and explain their technique to every other cop in the City

[no thanks, pops! We don’t want or care about bringing in guns. That’s a recipe for trouble we don’t need. Answer jobs, back up the police. Thats all we really need to worry about!]

Which one of those SOS bosses sounded the alarm ?

Now you even brought used car dealers to a new low, didn't think that was possible. Go run you little sissy.

What did you expect this kid to turn into. All three of these jackasses sitting around the double wide trying to stick it to the man.

If I'm not mistaken step dad's family had money. Must have blown it all buying the latest Hummer.

Not me. Not my partner. Please don't try to speak for the whole of the police department ever again. I've been doing this for twenty years. Ghetto policing, in Units and Beat Cars, as a Dick and a supervisor. It did not and would not ever happen to me. Shame on you for even speaking such idiocy. And guess what? With that attitude, it likely WILL happen to you. Moron.

How about the fact that finnegan didnt rat on anybody, but everybody ratted on finnegan? R U FKG KDNG ME? Just think about that. That simple fact could have changed the beginning and ending of this investigation entirely.

Meanwhile, since it ended the way it did, I still have more respect for the non rat - if I was forced to make a choice.

Well, they are both criminals; they both embarassed the department. One is in jail. They are both seperated from the department. It is hard to argue that one was "always" an excellent officer. So, applying your own logic, the excellent officer never did anything wrong--but he is in jail. I hope that you are not an officer (people with such brainpower should not carry neither a gun nor a star).

yeah?? Your gonna protect a copper who has turned criminal? A guy who was stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. A guy who would extort other coppers out of money that they both stole? Please, dont call yourself a copper because your no better than hererra or Jerry.. Your a criminal who would turn a blind eye to this crap. sorry, but if I was there and I knew about it and the feds came knocking kiss your ass goodbye. Your a criminal, im a police officer, If you didnt want to get ratted on then you shouldnt have became a crook. simple as that. We are not entitled to do rob and steal because we have "tough job" and it all involved dope dealers. Guess what, your a cop, not a dope dealer. Your not supposed to steal. I could care less about you. You steal and i know about it and I work with you im not getting myself in trouble or doing that to my family. If your so much better than that then ask jerry how it all turned out for him... sitting in federal prison for 12 years, no pension, no job no FAMILY. His wife kids GONE. Yeah, no snitches... ok, just like sh*thead on the street. Some of the coppers on this job make me sick.

oh, you mean jerrys 6 page "blame it all on everyone else" story. Yeah right, I know and worked in sos when Jerry was there. He had a huge head and knew he was untouchable. as guilty as guilty is. Hererra didnt have the balls to be any "ringleader". I read that entire article and shook my head through the whole thing... Tried to make it like HE was the one pressured into doing everything.. what a joke. Oh jerry, lets not forget.. your the one who pressured many of those kids to take some cash here and there. he doesnt deserve a 12 year sentence... He deserved 25 to life... He got away with a whollleee lot more....

I love that GoodFellas is being quoted for a cop blog.
This is sort of the family biz. Got 2 uncles, and aunt, and a husband on CPD. And if you think we have one ounce of 'pull', think again. I watched every single one of them lose footing on a list due to AA & bided their time til they got promoted just like I watched my father through 31 years as a firefighter do the same.

Absolutely agree that Finnegan deserves what he got. But my bigger gripe is with Herrera not even getting a slap on the wrist, but more like a 'firm talking to'.

Here's my reason for the post, Herrera has ALWAYS been a scumbag. We grew up in the same Brighton Park neighborhood until I moved & didn't have a chance to meet him again til high school. There he was a cocky prick who got his ass kicked on 99th & Pulaski as initiation into a 'party gang'

When this all began to come to light I heard the story of a friend from the old neighborhood, who now works at Cook County Jail. While on SOS, Herrera & his friends did a false home invasion of his mom's apartment building. I guess there were some undesirables living in the upper apartments. But Mr. Tough cop went into this woman's apartment & started raiding it. She pleaded, 'Keith why are you doing this?! You used to play here? Why?' At which point he held a gun to her head.

Later, when he was arrested, he was processed & taken to a cell by her son where he pleaded with him for understanding & compassion. Didn't get any.

That's why the 60 minutes story is full of shit. That's why Herrera should've rotted. He gives cops a bad name. And don't get me wrong: they're are still some out there. But the vast & overwhelming majority of you are rolling the dice every time you leave the house, hoping
you'll see it and the people you love again in a couple of hours. All to do a job that seems as fruitless as Atlas' at was.

I pray for each and everyone of you for a safe return home. I pray for your sense of character & decency to only deepen, unlike like those weasels who crept their way into the department & used it to their own good.

God Bless You & Keep you safe!!!
