Meter Deal Continues to Explode

  • Playing the tough guy protecting taxpayers’ money, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday accused the company that’s leasing Chicago parking meters of failing to document a $14 million bill for parking spaces taken out of service by the city.

On the day the Chicago Sun-Times disclosed the latest dispute between City Hall and Chicago Parking Meters LLC, the mayor sounded a bit like Clint Eastwood playing Harry Callahan as he explained his refusal to pay the bill.

“Just because you send a bill, I’m not gonna ask taxpayers to pay it. There’s a new day here. I don’t know who they think they’re dealing with,” he said.

Silly corporate people, thinking the city would actually live up to a signed contract that was shoved through the city council, ratified by a near (?) unanimous vote and signed by the city executive....kind of like labor contracts.

The only people getting rich here appear to be the lawyers.

And the taxpayers will never know the half of it; under the agreement these beefs go to private arbitration.

Win or lose, the taxpayer loses.

Also note that former Mayor Daley, his former Corporation Council, and two of his top aides, are all on the payroll of the law firm that put this corrupt deal together. Daley's former spokesperson Avis Lavelle is now the spokesperson for Chicago Parking Meters LLC. Must be some kind of coincidence. Fucking lying thieving bastards.

While the City Council had this deal shoved down their throats overnight and were berated by Daley to approve it right away, make no mistake about THIS... the evil frickin lawyers who crafted this deal had plenty of time to put it together and lock it up airtight!

I have a better idea on how to play Hard Ball. Since parking on the streets is city property. Why not tell the company and citizens that we will not enforce parking requirements for no Pay or Expired meters unless they want to retalk about the contract. They cant make us enforce tickets on public property and if people dont pay. Well Tough Shit.

That's funny, the city can send the car owner a ticket for another persons driving, they can put speed cameras up for the "children", they can make you pay $100 for being 5 min late on a meter, but they whine and stomp their feet when they get a bill they all signed off on.

So does this mean when we get an envelope with a bill for running a red light we can send it back empty? Or is that only for little tough guys who wore Tu Tus? I guess as with all dictatorships, right and wrrong is determined by the guy with the most power. Well watch out Rahm, because King Dick II is currently employed by the law firm that pulled this scam off in the first place.

$80,000,000.....

Wow, those Aldermen and Daley Really need to go back to school and take an Accounting Course.

They sold out really cheap for one billion, LAZ will make that back in 12.5 years with the next 62.5 years as Icing on the Cake.

"...Daley, his former Corporation Council, and two of his top aides, are all on the payroll of the law firm that put this corrupt deal together. Daley's former spokesperson Avis Lavelle is now the spokesperson for Chicago Parking Meters LLC."

This isn't a city ethics violation?

If it isn't, it certainly should be. The city's ethics ordinance needs "reform."

At the very least, Daley & company should have seen this as appearing inappropriate, and shouldn't have done it.

OK all you real/imagined lawyers out there, here's a question for you:

If he can't or won't be criminally charged, can't he be held civilly liable? The burden of proof is much less and surely a "reasonable man" could have foreseen upcoming problems with his handling of the pension funds, the potential problems with the parking meter deal and the sale of the Skyway.

Daley's malfeasance has ruined this city, leaving the taxpayers on the hook. All the while he gets a bodyguards/valets, a city car with city gas and an artificially pumped-up pension where he'll make more NOT working than most of the taxpayers will make while working.

He and the fifty idiots need to be held accountable, if for no other reason that future elected officials try these same stunts.

Lets see Rahm if you can be fair with us during contract negotiations, not asking for the world, just be fair. BTW - thanks for showing up at our St. Jude walk. You did something the former mayor never did.

I would have faith that CHICAGO citizens are actually fed up with POLITICS as usual WHEN they vote someone other than a CHICAGO THUG into office..just the city workers alone should be enough to put someone in office in the city that REALLY wants to promote freedom of everyday citizens and back up those that serve and protect.. after all that is the reason that city worker have to live in the city .. to bring in the votes for the corrupt .. inept Politicians..
