Hit and Run Suspect in Custody

We were unavailable most of the day, so we didn't get to cover this one:
  • A suspect is in custody in Wednesday night’s hit-and-run death of a popular Cook County correctional officer, struck and killed as she walked to work at the Cook County Jail, sources said.

Nikkii Bostic-Jones, 37, was hit around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday while crossing the street outside the jail on her way to work, officials said.

Bostic-Jones flew into the southbound lane and was hit and pinned under a sheriff’s car, sheriff officials said.

Police obtained the possible make and model of the full-sized van responsible, as well as a partial license plate number. Using databases, they located a similar van nearby, owned by a man who lives near the jail, source said.

Evidence on the van appeared to link it to the crash, sources said.

That entire street and boulevard around the jail is a death trap. County had stationed squad cars as crossing guards on and off over the years when employees and sheriffs had been hit by cars. Maybe it's time to figure out a better parking arrangement for our brothers and sisters working the jail. They shouldn't have to risk their lives crossing the street to get to that hellhole they work in.

Godspeed Officer Bostic-Jones.

Thanks, SCC.

It's a shame it took the death of an Officer to bring this to light. Trying to cross that street - especially at night - is like playing Frogger.

While we grieve and pray for Jones' family, loved ones, and coworkers, also keep in mind the officer who hit her (after the hit & run). By all accounts he had absolutely no warning and no way to avoid it. Word is he's utterly devastated by what's happened.

Word from the jail is that the suspect in custody won't be housed in Cook County for fear of reprisals.

Channel 7 had the alleged driver's friend on for an interview. Not a good friend. Friend's story, they were drinking, but only a few beers. friend left, returned and thought he hit something but did not see anything.

But whenever there's a media grabbing moment like the r kelly trial or jhud family's murder trial the city/county put out traffic aides, cones and even had chicago police from 010 doing traffic control.

RIP Officer Bostic-Jones

Trying to cross California at an unprotected crosswalk is dangerous enough, but then add in the factor that 50% of the drivers there are defendants and most of them hate the police, the states attorneys etc.

Adequate street lighting, speed bumps and uniforms that aren't black as night would have probably saved this officers life but there are more important things to spend the tax payer dime on such as Ceasefire, free meals for illegals, free government phones for the "poor"... I know, I know. This list could go on and on and on....

What a shit hole we live in!

How about a traffic light and speed-bumps at the crossing in front of the courts, and as an asside, make it a red-light camera.
Preckwinkle and Rham have the money to do this.

The first day we directed traffic, every single one of us was told that the uniform shirt is NOT a Superman costume and it will NOT stop a moving car.
Drivers are jerks, or they are distracted, or they are tired, or they are incompetent...but they are not necessarily paying attention to what they SHOULD be paying attention to. You have to be aware of that at all times.

How about YOU go stand there with a pen and notebook every day and write down traffic violator info and draw little pictures of each car?
At least then you'll have something to do with your time and you'll stop posting your constant bleating for a red-light camera on every corner on our blog.

How about just allow parking along California. Have LAZ install the meters, say about $9.00/hr? [\sarcasm off]

Seriously though, Little Res on Addison has a pedestrian overpass.
Been there for quite a few years.
Even a motel in the Dells has one.

A criminal illegal driving a stolen van while drunk with no license or insurance would not have stopped for a crosswalk even if there had been one. Build a pedestrian bridge and start deporting ALL criminal illegals.

If it was a family member of an inmate or an inmate getting out and got hit this would bring the mayor ,Governor and all the alderman to demand something be done. But after so many officers have been hit and now one dead its not a priority.Chicago politics .
