Angry Comment

Now this is a pissed off reader:
  • Anonymous said...Start over from Square One. Everyone sworn, out on the street. Uniforms that match. No bullshit. Bring back retired guys for inside jobs, part time. No more B.S. Fire ALL medical abusers. Hire new recruits, have knowledgable retired guys instruct them. Shut down Marine Unit after labor Day, horsies/helicopter too. Basic street policing, with real Supervisors. Demote the incompetent Merit Hacks back to Patrol, they get no guarantee of being a Supervisor forever, they didn't earn it legitimately. Cut ALL Gold Stars salaries 20%, and another 10% 1yr. from now if positive crime-reduction results [not lieing stats] aren't at least 25% better. Run the Dept. like a business, you produce results, at what you are assigned to, or you are demoted, or out. Women who have worked the Office their entire careers, out in the streets, and if you can't hack it, you are terminated, period. Same with the Office Boys.

EVERY Felony arrestee goes straight to County, bonded by a Judge, no laying up in the CPD lockup. Illegals get deported. Only enforce firearms laws against convicted Felons, unless a gun related crime in progress. Leave the Citizens ALONE. They HAVE the Constitutional right to protect themselves from these savages and killers, Coppers CAN'T be everywhere, and we know it. American citizens are FED Up. They deserve better than paying sky-high taxes for living in a Hellhole of Murder and Violence, AND INCOMPETENT POLITICAL AND POLICE Leadership.
Do we have a second? A second? The chair recognizes Detective Shaved for the second. All in favor? The "Ayes" have it. Motion passes.

ummm, no. I couldnt stop yawning while reading this. Get a life geek and stop taking this joke of a job so seriously. I guarantee the author of this would be the first to cry because work is too hard and to "business like". Give me a break. You try and run a ever moving police department like a business. It cant happen just because of the dynamics of the job. If you were a working copper and had time on the job maybe you would know this. Believe me, when I got on in the early 80s the job was a whole lot more lax than it is now. its way more rigid and business like now than then. The only difference between now and then is that no bosses cared back then and there was no accountability. If you shot screwed up there was no problem. If you screw up now your fucked.. which means accountability and business like.... just like you want. watch what you wish for youngin. I still love this job and am a year away from retirment. Im on the street everyday and its still all good. Its a great job and YOU have to make it that. stop getting yourself so worked up about crap that you cant control. If you dont want it to effect you its simple.... drive around in your car for 8 hours, take your two personals, your lunch answer your jobs and give reports when needed and the biggest one of all mind your business and dont stand out. Dude, that vein in your head is ready to pop.
Leave the J--O--B at the station.

It's all a game. The pols lie to everyone, the boss' lie to the media and P.O.'s. The rev-runs play the middle to get what they can in order to feel important.

The "star" does not make you superman, do the best you can and once in a while you have the satisfaction of helping someone who really deserves it. Getting home safe should be your primary objective.

The mayor, and citizens have the police department they wanted...reactive, report writing, clean-up service.

This all sounds great, and appears to be the word of a five year wonder.

This same person will be bitching up a storm after he or she has worked and been beaten down by the streets after 25 years. This same person will be looking for a spot to ride out the last year or two before retirement.

Once you hire the civilians that spot is gone forever. The flip side is that I do not want some civilian with access to my personal information. We have a few in our unit and in my opinion they are the most useless POS on this Dept.

Next, no retired guy who retired in the past 5 years wants any thing to do with this mess we call the CPD. The only ones who do, are nuts to begin with and I am glad they are gone.

The solution is simple!

1. If you have less that 20 years on the job, you are on the STREET! NO EXCEPTIONS!

Why should a sworn officer with 5 years on be working the desk when the guy who is maxed out or close to it is doing battle on the streets.

IF you have a problem with this to bad, start looking for a job!

2. HIRE MORE OFFICERS!!!

3. Unless you were injured ON THE JOB, you have 90 days to get back to FULL DUTY or hit the road! no exceptions.

We have a guy in the unit that had brain surgery back full duty 90 days. We have two light duty for two years. One with carpel tunnel and one with a bad shoulder both less than two 10 years on. Not fit to do the job, GET RID OF THEM!!!

I have to show up for work everyday so should they.

I know two many that have abused the medical system for years and are proud of it. Just because they do not want to work the streets.

No other employer would hire someone to do a job and then pay them for sitting at home doing nothing month after month, year after year.

Be careful what you wish for! Remember all the post for we need to hire an outsider? Well how is that working out for you now???

Mc Jersy is NYPD 100%. He will not be happy until he dismantles the CPD one Unit at a time. HE is killing every tradition of the CPD he can.

I have a better idea. If you are a merit pick in any rank, you need to get out there and start earning your spot. I not taking about jamming up the working guys. I am taking about working the streets and making some arrests.

If you have less than 20 years on and have worked the bulk of your career pushing a desk, they should offer a two refresher in the academy before you hit the street. If you don't want to work the street, turn in your star because you are no good to us anyway!!!!

SCC, now you're talking positive steps to reduce violence, improve conditions and morale. However the likelihood of the shitbags running the City of taking these steps is ZERO. Perhaps if City Hall was burned to the ground with it's lowlife contents there'd be hope. I can't help but remember what the predictions were for when Old man Daley died for the Windy City. Those predictions were correct. Perhaps out of the ashes of the Second City a Phoenix will rise.

Most retirees are RETIREES for a reason... THEY'RE DONE.

Definition of RETIRE

: to withdraw from one's position or occupation : to conclude one's working or professional career

Bring retirees back to work the desk? If they wanted to work the desk, they could have bid for it BEFORE they retired.

Then there is the problem of WHO gets hired. Unfortunately, we all know that it'll be some lazy, clouted people who won't do the job and can't be held accountable because of who their clout is.

There's also a little thing called the FOP Contract. You can't hire civilians, EVEN RETIRED COPPERS, to replace sworn officers in positions that previously employed ONLY sworn officers.

While on the surface, utilizing retirees would be a win-win situation, if this city or this Department were functioning PROPERLY, there would be no need for it. Besides, the idea, once in the hands of bureaucrats, would get bastardized to the point of where it was working AGAINST its original purpose and just be one more good idea destroyed by greedy people.

What is life? Movers and parkers?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion or sarcasm here, on this Insignificant Blog, offer some of the most interesting, simple and plausible solutions to operate this less than sloppy Departmant.
There's no better person to accomplish this re-map of the Dept than someone who has in the last, wrote his daily mover, parker and contact card.
Unfortunately those of us who didn't meet the political exam requirement for legitamate promotion, resort to sarcasm and silliness to voice our displeasures.
Keep writing those tickets, because if you dont, it's serious business when the xo messes with you.
So, what is this life you speak of?

Yup, retired guys are going to save us.

Please! Just because you managed to retire. Does not mean you were any good.

When I look at the retired list every month, I don't see many names that I would want to work with, aside from a few detectives that knew their shit. and a small handful of P.O.'s that worked good, most were long retired and really not the guy I wanted next to me while I was slugging at NATO.

Leave the mounted and marine unit, helo and swat and gangs guys alone. we are the second largest city in nation. Don't you think a proud big city Should have these units? I know most smaller towns have them.

Are we really that desperate?

What this really shows is how under staffed we really must be for the city to even consider something like this.

We are loosing the fight and it's in part because we are under gunned , but I know that if the city instructed the officers to take back the streets at all cost it would be done manpower or not.

I KNow if you gave me TEN MEN that I could choose and allowed us to do police work like we did 15 years ago,

We would take back each neighborhood one at a time.. And trust me the current manpower would not be a issue then.

Chicago's Finest? I don't think so.

You found your minimum work requirement and you are achieving it everyday. Great for you!

What's wrong with accountability? You sound like the welfare recipients with your "air of entitlement". You are no different.

Evidently the pressures of the job (lack of leadership plus dealing with the scum of the city) have eroded any motivation in you.

Maybe retirement pay should be based on performance and not just showing up for the job.

Although in your case with bringing in 2 movers, 5 parkers, etc. you would be considered a star in the sea of declining mediocrity.

CPD needs real leadership. The lack of it has turned good cops (who started with good motivation) into apathetic know-it-alls, who really know nothing.

and why would they lay up in the district station when they can simply claim chest pains and get a bed with sheets in a hospital and have real meals served to them on a tray?

I'm all for summary executions but in the real world good and decent police sergeants are getting convicted of aug batt for slapping a little piece of shit and they have to endure getting spit in the face and now jail looms and the loss of career, pension, savings, everything.

It is bizzaro world, everything is backwards, upside down, fucked up.

Then it is off to the land of the perpetual P-Day.

I would've never asked about other people and what they're doing, it's not my business. If they don't work, that's their problem. Now-a-days, officers want to get each other in trouble, dumped, fired. What is that? I remember people being on the sheets and I never saw them one day, couldn't tell you who they were if we were the only two in an elevator. Who cares? I can't think of any retirees who would like to come back and answer phones and put up with more BS like they did for anywhere from 25-35 years or so.

If you dont want it to effect you its simple.... drive around in your car for 8 hours, take your two personals, your lunch answer your jobs and give reports when needed and the biggest one of all mind your business and dont stand out. No stress and no nonsense from anyone. I still bring in 2 movers, 5 parkers and 5 contact cards every single tour. I throw in an arrest here or there and im golden. Nobody messes with me and everyone leaves me alone. You could learn a thing or two by shutting your mouth... just sayin

The post and this first comment both make a lot of great points. Of course the post is almost like listening to a liberal, "all fantasy." There is no way that just about any of that stuff will ever happen. Much like believing that Savages are people too and they conform with civil society. Savages for the record are any and all low life scum criminals, so save the "your racist" comments liberals.
So many people seem to point to the old guys or retirees and assume they have it all right and would "fix" everything, this couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, there are some outstanding "old timers" out there so don't get me wrong, but most would be of NO USE to the modern police department. Whether we like it or not laws have changed, perceptions have changed, accountability has changed, and technology has advanced. The majority of the "old timers" I run into, and it is a LOT, have no idea how to handle basic arrests. They major to duck, dive, and hide from work for so long and when they get stuck with it, they try to call a tact team or some poor young "hair gel" to take over their failed abortion. Now keep in mind there are some SOLID senior guys that work up to the day they retire and continue to learn the new tools and adapt to the changing ways, it just sucks dealing with co-workers that bury their heads in the sand.

citizen here. The other day I made a really dumb traffic move. As I did it, I thought oh crap. I wasn't paying attention 100%.

Of course just my luck sitting at the stop light is an unmarked car. The guy blows through a red light and starts following me. Tailgates the hell out of me. I was wrong, figured I was about to get pulled over.

But instead after following me 3 blocks very close behind, he pulls over to the side and I keep going.

Made my day. Must have had bigger fish to fry than dealing with me or was close to the end of the shift or didn't feel like doing a traffic stop.

I'll be more careful and not make that traffic mistake again.

I am a policewoman with 23 years on the job and I have NEVER worked the desk or office. That being said, there are some men that have been office/desk hacks most of their careers and scared of their own shadows so do I really want to work with someone like that? Do I really want to make a traffic stop or go into a domestic with someone like that? I am grateful for those scared or babied officers (men & women) to work the desk because I never wanted that or them for partners or backup.

I worked the streets in the ghetto for 15 years. A bid opened up on the desk & I took it due to illness in the family. I completely agree that those who have never worked the streets should be put out there. On a regular basis, po's, tact, Sgt's & e few LT's have come to me when they don't know what to do. I am no know it all but I have a fairly good knowledge base as a result of my time on the streets & the desk. When I started it was standard that when unsure just call the desk. Generally there is a desk person that has the answer or the know how to get the answer. I am nearing the end & can promise you that if I left today there would be a whole lot of incorrect arrests, charges, complaints, inventories, ect. I gurantee you I always, always do my best to be helpful & considerate of the fact that those that ask for my help are the ones answering to the bs on the streets while I am safe inside a building. However the job is not complete until the paper is done. I work with goofs assigned to the desk on a regular basis, they think it's work to answer the phone. OK, enough, just saying. Circling the wagon now, ahhh.

Retired old school police was reading this "blast from the past" way of doing police work and have to say while nothings going to be perfect, rolling back to the doing of police work with plenty of real uniformed police officers on the street in EVERY district is the only way to prevent and or arrest offenders from owning this city. Back in the 70s and early 80s people actually liked the police and had our backs...more importantly we the working police all had each others backs. Yeah, I know you can talk about the few jerkoffs that where thieves, drunkards, whatever...the majority of men and women always responded to any type of in progress call and backed each other up. It made the job fun and interesting. This CPD has to be fixed from the top down so police officers can feel confident in the brass backing them up and the city must restore legal protection against the endless lawsuits raining down on any officers who still try hard to do police work for all the right reasons. There should never be punitive damages on an officers actions in the line of duty unless he officer engages in criminal activity. End the welfare lotto! Ah, then maybe the next generation of officers will quit talking about being paid for just showing up...don't want to risk losing their payck, pension, house, freedom by the now giant legal risks in just doing the job! I retired with pride in never losing my moral compass or my work hard/play hard lifestyle. I would love for the younger police to be able to do all that we did for the good of good citizens and go home at the end of a tour and look forward to the next tour of duty. God bless all of the officers and I pray for positive change for all of the LEO still trying to make a difference... Retired in 2010

To the post who said retirees are not going to save you. No shit. Thats not the point.

Yes there are retirees who don't want a thing to do with this department any more. But there are some retirees who have personal financial problems and pay high insurance premiums each month. These are the ones who could use a few extra bucks.

The paper shuffling jobs that current full time cops do in 4 hours could be great part time jobs for retirees or maybe some disability officers - since the department wants no limited or light duty officers any more. And part time means city does not have to provide any benefits or overtime or vehicles or etc. Easy peasy.

Add'l comment - absolutely all exempt should take a minimum of 20 percent pay cut to save the city some money. Those salaries are overly inflated and undeserving. Exempts always have 20 people under them doing their work. All they have to do is monitor the blackberry and show up - occasionally. Other than that, exempts are held to no responsibility whatsoever.

The lack of it has turned good cops (who started with good motivation) into apathetic know-it-alls, who really know nothing.

sorry you feel that way.. But with 29 years on the job I feel that I deserve to settle down and do my job as a beat officer the best that I can accomplish... especially with only a year left before retirment. ive played the tac game, gang team, narcotics etc. Im going out on a nice easy stressfree road. If you dont like it... oh well, too bad. I still make sure I dont produce NOTHING. Because something is not the bare minimum when your on bid on days working a beat car.. the bare minimum is ZERO which is what I refuse to do. Such angry angry people on this job these days. Hey old timers... remember when we all use to hang out, get along, have drinks together, go out with the wives and liked everyone who had a blue shirt on???? I've worked midnights all my career and the greatest thing abou it that I have always loved: it starts out rollin' and it dies down right around that 03:00 hr; whereas, my partner and I can now relax, get something to eat, and finish out the tour with bringing in whatever activity we choose (parkers, movers, arrests, whatever...) After it's all said and done, you're at home with the family and you have a profession that so many can only dream of having. Be thankful, have fun, stop bitching.

Got to agree with "angry". I had people with 12+ years teaching (on the street) me how to be the police. I listened to them and respected them. Too many new people come on with the attitude that the academy taught them all they need to know. And why not act that way? Now people with less than 8 years act like this department owes them something. They bitch that they got taken off a car. Do you're fucking job first. Stop acting pissed off at roll call, it makes the rest of us miserable to work with you. Stop trying to get out of paper jobs. Give the retard the RD # and then you can sit on the paper job for an hour instead of the BS 19P job. You won't look as lazy and the Sgts won't be on your ass. That being said, the white shirts need to start giving patrol some time-due. 35th/Michigan needs to understand that you don't need cops who "care", you need ones that just do the job. So I wouldn't agree about running the department like a business. You can't tell a cop to do more after you just told him that his time due is cancelled. We are not office workers. The more you try to squeeze out of us, the more we're going to say, "Fuck this department, fuck this city." You gotta give a little to get a lot.

Typical of the younger generation who have all the answers, but cant even sign his name. How many businesses have to deal with the lies and false police reports, lying witnesses and other criminally minded creeps, not many. Lying witnesses and other creeps should be prosecuted not left to go lie again. The west side is violence plagued because outsiders joined with a few creeps who live there to rob, rape and falsely prosecute the decent people and this violent broke corrupt city is the results.

He called in your plate, waited for the response, found out you and the car weren't wanted for anything, then gave you a pass. And you learned a lesson without paying a hefty price for it.

Yeah, the 14 - 16 hour days, working all weekends, getting fucked over at Compstat, everyone passing the buck to you because they don't have the balls to make a decision ... I'm not a fan of most exempts but some I know personally and worked with work their BALLS off. If you're going to suggest taking 20% of their salaries away from them (which actually happened when they had to take 24 unpaid days in 2010 & 2011), then take an equal percentage away from all the dog P.O.'s, sgts and lieutenants who don't do anything but show up. Does that make sense?

You're a fucking moron ...

Let me make sure I got this right, from the comments: there are too many medical abusers, so the medical should be reduced; there are too many POs working the desk so that job should be given to civilians; POs on duty disability should have to work the desk (one person suggested for less money); our retirement pay should be based on merit (that merit thing works out well for promotions); each of you is a better PO than any that have retired; Sgts. should be demoted. The mayor should submit this at the negotiating table. I am so glad I'm gone. What a bunch of whiners. I wouldn't trust any of you. And the chick with 23 years......I bet the desk guys aint lining up to work with you either. Although the guy "slugging it out at NATO" is my hero!

Shaved? Really? "Like a business?" The first thing
the so-called Detective needs to really clean up
is his hateful race-baiting blog. When he does
THAT, then I'm more than willing to listen to any
other ideas he's got. He doesn't need any advertising
here on the SCC blog, either. Shaved is an embarrassment to professional lawmen everywhere.

"Bring back retired guys for inside jobs, part time."

"Hire new recruits, have knowledgable retired guys instruct them."

Only if I can keep living just across the border in Indiana, where the booze, cigarettes & strip clubs are so much cheaper.

So even after you retire you have nothing better to do?

"there is no unity on the job. its dog eat dog. this is right up rahms alley."

Rahm is turning us against each other.

Sure, there's always been coppers who constantly bitch about other coppers, and everything else, for that matter, but every time someone says "send them all to the street" or "disband this unit" or "disband that unit", you're playing right into his hands.

Divide and conquer.

We've got to stick together, especially now, while our next contract hangs in the balance and a presidential election is afoot.

"A house divided cannot stand."

I agree 100%

I wish I could choose men for the old red squad, does anyone here remember them?

Oh yea, navy pier offices. Fearless. Intelligent. Sad the great ones are passed on.

8/22/2012 11:10:00 PM

TRU dat. Sgt Keating the great one was passed on like a New Orleans whore from CPD to the navy pier offices and now to CTA. Heard he has a three-wheeled segway. Greatness is still in our midst -- just need to prop up the toilet lid and look.

How about we just eliminate 20% of the exempt positions (and 50% of the aldermen, while we're at it)?

Exempts know what they're getting into from the start, if they don't want to go through this, they can remain lieutenants...and many have for the very reasons you outlined.

It's like any job on the department, if you hate it so much, why are you still doing it?

"You found your minimum work requirement and you are achieving it everyday."

That's the prevalent and unfortunately, safe attitude throughout the department.

Boo Hoo, I don't feel sorry for them in the least. Most of them got the greatest gift of all, an $80.000 a year pension. Either they should take a cut in pay or they need to end the gold braid pension, period. There is no reason they should be receiving both. With few exceptions, these connected individuals will leave this job with pockets lined, no different then the rest of Illinois politico's. No one forced any of these mostly incompetent merit winners to take the position and they should have known going in what the job entailed.

Some of these people should never have been made a Sgt. much less command staff. Look around, you are rewarding people that are destroying a once proud department. Moral has never been worse, don't try to defend the indefensible.

SCC,you took down my post about what watch parties were like way back when. I'm crushed! What I meant to say was that we all got together after mid-nights were over and drank a lot of pop and same songs like kumbyah [sp?]. Yep, those were the days.

Amazing SCC. They took your advise. I got a call today asking if I would want to come back as a civilian trainer. 3 days a week at 50 per hour.
I thought it was BS and called back the number to H.R.
Another derective that I retired with in April also got the call.
They are looking to hire only former detective who had over 25 yoj. Makes sense, 9161' have to always lean on a detective for the proper way to do a case.
I pick up the paperwork Monday.

Yeah but that ship sunk thirty some years ago anyways, so what's the harm? The cops that lived it understood it, the one's that didn't can only be envious but still not get it, and the citizens already have negative thoughts and feelings about everything we do. Otherwise, I understand and agree with your post.
