Hey, Look - Side Jobs

  • A downtown alderman floated the idea Wednesday that businesses should hire off-duty cops to conduct extra patrols on North Michigan Avenue where visitors last summer had to deal with some mob attacks.

Those patrols would serve as a preventive measure and take pressure off a department driving to drive down homicides and shootings elsewhere in the city, said Ald. Brendan Reilly.

"Business owners have expressed an interest in participating in that type of program with the interest being that you'd have additional coverage in these hospitality, tourism areas so that you're supplementing your regular beat cops there," said Reilly, 42nd.
Where to start with this one? The city is already hiring back between 300 and 500 cops most nights to do "violence reduction." That by itself shows were shorthanded in the extreme. So now, instead of the city paying OT, they seem to be trying to saddle it on businesses that already pay some of the highest property taxes in Chicago. These costs are then passed onto consumers who are already paying extra sales taxes in the touristy parts of town for food, shows, hotels, etc. Then people start (or continue) seeing that it's cheaper to go out to the 'burbs, Wisconsin, Michigan. And safer. And the downward spiral accelerates.

All excellent points....the city tosses the Fee for Service idea onto businesses and taxpayers...Buy Chicago Police and the City Saves Money to Spend Elsewhere.

And Off Topic...our Generous Mayor gifted the Former Chief of Chicago Public Schools a Fee for Non-Service to the tune of $300,000.00 and the new Chief gets $250,000.00 this year plus $30,000.00 for moving expenses from Detroit. Just like
that...$580,000.00 gone with a stroke of the pen.

Are we lucky or what???

So, with all of the fabulous Universities and Colleges in this city: Northwestern, U of C, DePaul, Columbia, U of I at Cgo, St. Xav's, Chicago State, Daley and others...they can't find a professor or administrator who could steer the Chicago Public School system into a worthy institution....then why are these schools even functioning if they can't produce a Chief for Chicago Public Schools.

Keep voting Democrat.

If it is done by the store-theatre owners, they should provide squad cars also. The current ot special employment opportinity is using all the "death traps" this Department can keep running. Let them hire their part time Police after applying for the spots like in the real world. Show your worth their $. Get more actual working Police out there rather then the "sleepers" eating up all the other ot initiatives. Some of us are tired of showing up to do a job and being assigned to work with a "do nothing". Im not saying be a hero, just not make those 8 hours miserably long..... I have 14 years on, use gel in my hair, and still like to do my job. Only 6 more to go (Future member of the KMA Club...). Sorry boys, like the hair gel....

Plus, who covers you if you get injured? What if you get a beef against you? Are they going to pay you to go to court if you do arrest someone? I think not. What happens if you get a pack of wild animals and need help. I'm gonna bet no radios either. And, how exactly, are you gonna sign up for this? Private businesses probably will mean who you know. I can see the CAPS people getting the nice gigs, taking care of themselves and their friends. Hey Brendan, grow a pair and tell the little ballerina to hire more police. Like the post says, they already pay their taxes...hefty taxes. Get rid of 30 alderthieves and pay for the new hires that way. How much do you want to bet the midget's budget passes 48-2 or better?

Sure, but the age old question is this: What if the officer gets hurt or killed on the street while working "off-duty". Will the City consider that an IOD?

Besides, it is the RESPONSIBILITY of the Chicago Police Dept. to protect ALL of it's citizens and visitors ALL the time. This is BULLSHIT!

The next thing will be to tell the North side residents to pay for their own "off-duty" police because there is a greater need for "on-duty" police in the ghetto.

We could replace these moron Aldermen COMPLETELY and no one would even notice!

The beginning of privatizing the police force.

Corporations couldn't care less about security in the hood. It's their business and their customers and after the customers spend their money they don't even matter to them anymore.

Privatize the PD so you can bust the unions. Bring in Blackwater security or something.

Don't fall for it people. You be left holding the bag when things go sideways.

If the businesses want extra police then have them pay for a Special Employment program at OT rates. They pay the city, as the CTA and CHA do.

It has 'always' been cheaper to hire back off duty police rather than hire more police!

No extra medical expenses or contributions, no extra training, payroll procedures already in place, no extra pension contributions (ha ha lol), and they already have their own equipment!

And let's not forget those extra sales taxes on restaurants downtown also nail downtown office workers - i.e., largely city residents - and downtown residents - i.e., city residents who already pay high sales taxes.

Sure, pound 'em til they move. It'll be somebody else's problem by then anyway.

And when a copper steps in shit while working these part time jobs he or she is on their own. The city won't cover them because they are under the employ of someone else, but the city will go the extra mile to ram it up the coppers ass. Your gambling with your job when you do this.

P.S. If coppers would stop working the VRI, then we would have Rahm by the short hairs. But I guess that extra money is more important then everyone standing together on principle. Keep shooting yourself and everyone else in the foot. You will understand when Tiny Dancer takes away your benefits, protections, and pension.

A local restaurant in the Norwood Park area had to close down because it cost him $80,000 a year in taxes and fees to operate in the City. Even with a decent weekend crowd, he couldn't come close to turning a profit after factoring in other costs.
That's just a shame.

No wonder small business is dead.

a scheme to try pass off cost to the taxpayer
as someone pointed out earlier
this is paid already by sky high taxes downtown business pays already
and besides when you have to work O/T already and then you get two days off (if your lucky) and you want to work some more?
might be nice for some but others have families and personal things to deal with
besides would the business pay the cop directly or would Tiny and the streetlightmarksman have their fingers in thier pockets?

it is not unheard of for police depts to have programs like this. sometimes they are more organized and official then other times.

I can remember back in the late 70s in Chicago when if a business wanted a cop he would just call and talk to the desk Sgt and someone would show up and the business owner would make the financial arrangements with the cop directly.

It is not like there are no cops working side gigs already.

If you are working a private job and do something that an off duty officer would do, then you are NOT covered by the pension for an IOD. If however, you are OFF DUTY and get injured doing a job that an on duty officer would do, then you would get an IOD... it depends on whom is paying you at the time.

I could be wrong, but that is the way it is handled downstate.

What a joke this political system is.

==============

By Peter Nickeas and Liam Ford Tribune reporters

2:49 p.m. CDT, October 26, 2012

A man pistol-whipped the mother of his child before he threatened to force her to strip and left her in an unfamiliar South Side neighborhood early today, police said.

Jose Torreblanca, who turned 21 on Thursday, was angry because the woman had embarrassed him on his birthday at a club near 47th Street and Pulaski Road in the Archer Heights neighborhood.

“You embarrassed me, now I’m going to embarrass you,” Torreblanca told the woman, 18, according to a police report.

While in his Dodge Durango, he beat her in the face and forehead with his fist and a pistol, then ordered her out of the SUV in the South Shore neighborhood near 71st Street and Clyde Avenue and ordered her to strip, police said.

He told her she was “lucky you’re my baby’s mama or I’d kill you,” according to the police report. He drove off without making her strip, police said.

Torreblanca weighs 237 pounds and is 5-foot-8, police said. The woman weighs 100 pounds less and is 8 inches shorter, police said.

Torreblanca, of the 2600 block of South Tripp Avenue, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and domestic battery, as well as driving on a suspended license and possession of ammunition without valid firearm identification, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

Court records show Torreblanca had been ordered released on a signature bond Wednesday after he was arrested for violation of probation in two criminal cases: aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2009 and a 2010 case in which he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in a public place.

A condition of the signature bond was that Torreblanca report to an inpatient substance-abuse treatment center on Thursday, according to court records.

Torreblanca also was arrested in 2009 on a domestic battery charge but the case was dropped in 2011, according to court records.

Torreblanca was ordered held without bail after prosectuors alleged another violation of probation had been committed in this morning's incident, Conklin said. Torreblanca is scheduled to appear in Cook County Domestic Violence Court Branch 64 on Nov. 2.

Daley started the idea of "one contact point with the City to get all 134 licenses you'll need" and touted it as some kind of great progress. Emanuel is continuing this hyperefficient-sounding corporate-doubletalk BS.

...and they still don't have that "one contact point" working and they never will, any more than 311 requests on that bloated-code City web site work half the time.

I'm in. I have 22 years on. I have never worked a side job or special and never will. Yes I have a family, kids, tuition, mortgage, 3 cars motorcycle and other bills, yet I save and have money to pay my bills and have money to do other things(gamble, dinners, drinks, vacation, ball games, movies etc). My time off is for me and my family, not to work my ass off so I can retire soon and die shortly after. The point is I don't have a problem not working extra, but not every cop is in the same situation.
