678 Parkers; $105,000 in Fines

  • It might just be a world record.

At the very least one particular car has set a City of Chicago record for having been issued the most parking violations ever and having accumulated the most parking fines in the city’s history.

The city claims Jennifer Fitzgerald owes over $100,000 in parking tickets.

No, that’s not a typo or a few misplaced zeros on the end.

The amount is actually 105,761 dollars and 80 cents to be precise.

This is the total mind boggling debt the City of Chicago says the 31 year old, single mother of one, allegedly owes for parking violations on a single vehicle.

The story involves a car parked in an employee lot at O'Hare for three years and numerous policies for removal of said car ignored for those three years. But you know who's going to look worst in this event.

The Police Department.

Granted, it was probably hilarious to see the car parked where it was for years on end, covered in faded orange paper that was a few hundred Parking Violation Notices. But at some point, someone ought to have written the thing up as "abandoned" and stopped papering it. At least, that's the way it's going to play out with the ongoing lawsuit. We've got as much (or more) of a sense of humor as the next copper, but the affected citizen might make off with some taxpayer dollars over this silliness. Hopefully, no copper catches time over it.

The Expired Meter has the entire story and they're getting some mileage out of it.

Dont be surprised if the girl is dead in the trunk either.

And the funny thing is all she has to do is declare bankruptcy and her problems are solved.

How dumb. Common sense would dictate to call it in as an abandoned vehicle. That was a lawsuit waiting to happen. We are our own worst enemy. Now the ignorant woman will sue the police department and they'll payout.

Nope, the chicago auto pound working with the dept. of revenue I think only tows vehicles that are of some worth and that sit legally parked in front of the owners home so that they can be extorted for fines and fees.

Big shout out to Mr. West may you rot in hell.

OT, I loved seeing Rhambo squeazzing out the tears somehow comparing immigrants who came before to the illegalls today in need of D/L's. Hey moron the difference is my parents and most immigrants of the past followed the laws of this country, filling paper work out and waiting there turn.

I was also watching Ch32 news and they mentioned the D/L story and how the "immigrants" were hoping for the new law to pass. They are NOT immigrants, they are illegals, undocumented workers, foreign aliens and whatever else you want to call them.

After the first 50 parkers were on this car should someone have figured out it should be towed? Sounds like some cop(s) were doing their quota on this one car for three years. What a waste of tax dollars dealing with this mess.

Did anybody check the trunk to see if there is a body in there? The kicker would be if it is a homicide and the car is wallpapered with parking tickets on top of it. Geez, the average taxpayer would get the boot after 5 tickets!

Common sense would show it was abandon and should have been towed. That said,I have hard time believing the car was put in her name without her knowledge. The Secretary of State office would not let me list my wife on a title because she was not present. On another occasion a currency exchange also wanted her present.

4 out of 5 drivers always say they didn't deserve a citation
But at what point after receiving a "Notice to Pay" from the City that "fines will be doubled if payment isn't received in 30 days", do you begin to question or contest the violation(s) ????
I got a Street cleaning ticket that wasn't on my window, got the letter in the mail & waited for the Contest by Mail Disposition, which was never responded to by the City, had to pay the $60 after missing their deadline.
Big deal. I lost the fight as expected, but I knew I had to pay it. Morons move and don't change their registration to think they're fooling the system. To bad.
I say amnesty at 50%, that's all. Better yet, let Expired Meter donate the funds. Either way....PAY UP.

Here's the truth: Please update.. The ex-boyfriend of the plaintiff in this lawsuit is a United Airlines employee who drove and parked that vehile daily in one of many parking lots reserved for airline employees. (ORD employee parking lots alone accomodate over 1,000 plus spaces) That vehicle never had an accumulation of citations piled on it. He drove to work and parked his car. It got tagged while he was working. After he finished his shift, he removed the citation from the vehicle and drove home. Next day or so, he returned to work, parked in a different spot and it got tagged again..Get the picture? Furthermore, he drove a car that was registered to his ex-girlfriend. Nothing like knowing your ex is going to take the hit for parking/ordinance citations that you are responsible for. And they say hell hath no furry of a woman scorned! No slacking or monkey business here on CPD's part. There are thousands of cars parked daily at ORD. The employee lots are huge and accomodate thousands of vehicles, and that's no exageration.

Abandoned. Dilapidated. Possible bomb in car. Possilbe dead body in trunk. After 10 days, why not a tow. How about after 30 days then? An airport, you would think had even stricter rules and guidelines than just a car on the street.

A huge amount of stupidity on the part of the issuers and pure malfeasance on the part of the supervisors. When the suspensions are handed out, the supervisors should take twice the time as the issuers.

Big payday? There's going to be no "big payday" for parking tickets, the lawsuit was filed to quash some of the tickets and to force the ex to take responsibility for the fees and fines that stick. Some of you are mildly retarded.

You have to admit that the idiots who kept writing citations on these obviously abandoned car and were too lazy to initiate the tow are making everyone look bad. Then, you have to look at the garage managers. What have they been doing for 3 years?

One question, who were the idiots that kept writing the tickets?

11/28/2012 01:36:00 PM

Nice at least that revenue writers can't be blamed for this mess.

The simple fact that the vehicle wasn't booted after 3 tickets in 21 days or towed after day 30 is enough reason to pull all the Parker books from the CPD and TMA's at the Airports and have Revenue and city clerk handle the lots (the PO's and TMA's can handle departure/arrival enforcement all they want).

And if anyone read the story closely....on one day that car got nailed with abandoned/7 days, hazardous/dilapidated & parked in city lot more than 30 days. When I went through the academy class for training on how to write Parker's....my class was specifically told Not to issue multiple parking violations at the same time. WTF was the airport detail smoking for 3 years?

Read the other comments moron. The car was moved every day. Boyfriend drove it to work and knew it was going to get ticketed. Not abandoned, moved daily. He was sticking it to his ex.

How come she never got the notices I don't know, unless they went to her old address, perhaps his house, causing him to chuckle at how he was screwing the old girl.

Owner is responsible for the tickets. She can try to sue ex-boyfriend but good luck. I would like to see her declare bankruptcy and screw the City. Then let Rahm make another arrogant comment.

I would say OVERKILL, on this one, when a parked car has 3 or 4 tickets on it, it is time for the officer to get out and investigate why this car has been there. Run the plate, maybe, just maybe make a call or a drive over to the owners house. The owner may not even know where the car is, or why didn't our great Boot Patrol geta hit on this.
