Cop Hurt in Fire

  • A Chicago police officer and a resident of an Uptown apartment building were hospitalized Thursday from a fire in the building.

The fire occurred just before noon in a fifth floor apartment at the Lawrence House, a high-rise apartment building at 1020 W. Lawrence Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs.

The small fire was quickly extinguished, but a police officer and resident were taken to hospitals with smoke inhalation, according to Fire Media. The police officer was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, while the resident was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital.

And of course, the requisite ignorance from the local aldercreature:
  • Uptown neighborhood Ald. James Cappleman (46th) who was at the scene of the fire, Tweeted, “I’m very thankful today for our great Fire Department!”
Not to take anything away from the firefighters, but seeing as how a Police Officer is the only one going to the hospital, on Thanksgiving no less, You're Welcome Cappleman, you asshole.

Has the officer been released from the hospital? Was he assigned to 019 or 020? Name or at least initials? Hope all is well.

BTW, if there's any neighborhood in the city where most of the people on the street do the "thorazine shuffle", it's got to be Uptown. ZOMBIES!

Either give guns to the firefighters or masks to the police. It's amazing how fast a response to a fire is for those couple of days off with pay.Tell the whole truth. Not just a biased part.Firefighters aren't handcuffed in doing their job,but the police are. It's a bad state of affairs when a police officer has to go into a fire call but is restricted in going on their own calls because of manpower shortages, etc.

Legal concealed carry restores civility to the Holidays. I can absolutely see this happening here, except the gun wouldn't be legal (unless he was a PO) and the one protecting himself from the savage would get charged. Ho Ho Ho.

Good Luck and Speedy Recovery Officer.

OFF TOPIC:

QUESTION: Some government legislative bodies pay their legislators in one lump sum at the start of their term. Does the U.S. Congress do that and that is why Jesse Jackson Junior stayed in the race?

Did that give a boost to his Congressional Pension?

Does he now start collecting a Congressional Pension?

Will he continue to collect said pension even if convicted of any crimes (like Dan Rostenkowski did)?

These questions are posed at time when the Democrats are trying to grab our pensions.

Actually a policeman is not supposed to run into a fire building. A police officer's job at a fire scene is traffic and crowd control. And case report. Period.

I had a Lt who gave many lectures at roll call on exactly that.

The city will never combine police and fire into one department crossed trained. This only works in very small towns. The Crestwood police department are all fireman working part-time with a scattering of other burb cops working part time. Let me tell you, you will not get good service or professional work from most of them. They either dont know the law or they are told to remain ignorant of it.

So the Sgt. who takes the time to acknowledge the good job you did with an honorable mention sees you throw it in the garbage, and thus, never writes another one again for anyone... Be happy when you're acknowledged for what you do on this job by your Sgt, nobody else will; it is an insult to the Sgt. if you throw it in the garbage.

Retirement with a deferred, reduced pension is available at the minimum retirement age of 55 to 57 (depending on year of birth) to a former Member who has completed at least 10 years of federal service. The pension annuity will be permanently reduced if it begins before age 62..

Well done office, but when you stop waiting for and expecting accolades for all the things the media doesn't know you do, you'll be a happier person. Take personal pride in going the extra mile or share it with your family. But, if you expect the general public, the media, or the awards committee to slap a ribbon on your chest or write a rah rah piece in the paper about the CPD (or more specifically, you), you'll soon grow bitter, resentful, and cynical about this job. Keep "just doing your job" as you said. The best cops I know are the ones who don't give a crap about that kind of attention or acknowledgements.

The City of Kalamazoo, MI (Yes, there really is one) has a combined "Public Safety" Department. I believe the fire houses have minimum staffing, maybe a driver or two, and all the police have bunker gear in the trunk of thier squad cars. When a fire is called out, the divers take the rig to the scene, cops show up, drop thier duty gear, pull out the bunker gear, and go to work. I really don't know how well the system works, or how the officers feel about it. Thankfully my family who still lives there have never had need for police OR fire services. The population in the city is about 75,000.

There are 2 Public Safety Departments in the state. Glencoe and Rosemont. The Associated Firefightes of Illinois, which is the state union association helped get legislation passed that will prevent anymore from happening. We all know that police and fire work are vastly different. However, our paths cross daily and I have personally assisted police officers and will continue to do so if a copper needs help. Running into a burning building can be a dicey affair even with our protective gear. I will never condemn a police officer who is trying to save a life. Please use good sense though. Black, nasty smoke pushing out is a good indicator you may get in trouble. The lower the fire floor is, the easier it is to get hurt. We are all pawns of politicians. I'm a fireman in the "east of I-57 corridor of southern Cook County and I see the good work of both the police and fire departments on a daily basis. The whole region has become an unwelcome extension of the southside.

I'll share this one with you guys. Way back in the 70's after being discharged from the Marines I landed a police job with a suburban dept, that I will not name. I was a rookie on the mid night shift patroling the town and observed a house fire with flames shooting out the 2nd floor. I called it in requested fire, and procceded to the builing. I helped evacuate the people on the 1st floor and was told that an eldery female lived in the apartment that was blazing. At that time dispatch advised me that the fire trucks were all stuck on the other end of town by a train and would be delayed. So not to look like a jack ass I went into the burning building 2nd floor apartment. I located the elderly female on the floor and pulled her out. At about that time the calvary arrived and I got some assistance removing her off the front porch. that's the short end of the story. The long end was that for my effort I received 2nd degree burns to my back, shirt caught fire, and was treated for smoke inhalation, and spent a week in the hospital bun unit. My Sgt. at the time wrote me a letter of repeimand for not waiting for the fire department and for working out of my classification, and damaging city property, my shirt. He also threatened to not have the town pay me for my time off or any of my hospiatl bills for working out of classification. He was also one of the "your job at a fire scene is traffic and crowd control". 3 days after being released from the hospiatl I was called into a closed door meeting with the chief and police commisson and all charges were dropped, I was given a new shirt and a letter of commendation, and told all my medical bills would be taken care of. The Sgt. was placed on a LOA, and eventually retired. I left the department the next year for the CPD. Even with that experience I never hesitated going into a burning building to save a life. As I remember part of our oath is to protect Life and Property. I still feel the pain and see the scars every day.

Very Old and Retired Guy

From there, I left town for a Thanksgiving dinner with family..... with no contact with the press to learn later that a police officer had to go to the hospital.

Any police officer who has interacted with me has come away knowing that I have the utmost respect for them and their line of work.
