Eight Years

Another scandal draws to a close:
  • A former Chicago police detective, a self-confessed alcoholic, who drunkenly plowed into a stalled car in 2009, then walked away from the two men burning to death on the Dan Ryan, was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday.

His victims’ families called the sentence a slap in the face, a favor for 18-year police veteran Joseph Frugoli.
We've seen a lot less given...and a lot more.

What a shame people had to die because another person made a bad decision. As officers we need to take care of each other. And I don't mean cover shit up, I mean looking out for each other and never Letting your fellow do something stupid like this. This detective was sentenced to eight years but he has to live the rest if his life with this burden. And IM willing to bet he wishes he was dead.

As long as the department keeps protecting people with addiction problems, we will continue to have incidents like these. We all know the drunk in our district yet we do nothing about it. Eap is available for those who need help. This is one of the only jobs where you get full pay to go to rehab on the departments dime. If an officer of any rank doesn't get the help they need, then we shouldn't feel sorry for them when the shit hits the fan. Ultimately, they will bring a black eye to each and every one of us when they fuck up and kill someone while drinking and driving.

Two shitbag taggers lost to the art world. Tough shit. How many illegals kill people and get light sentences but never serve them because they skip out back to Mexico?

Remember that fatal hit and run at 4300 N Lincoln? Shitbag illegal cocksucker hit a waitress getting off her shift. She goes airborne, dies, and Jose skips back to Mexico. Last I heard they were trying to get him back. No matter, the only witness against him is sitting next to him in the car. Not much of a case.

Fuck that family screaming at 26th St. The Det. got the norm in a case like that.

The average has been 6 years per death, he got 8 total because the two were also committing a crime. Their crime did not justify their punishment that's why there was a reduction. Of course everyone will say it was favoritism but as a whole we get stiffer penalties than the average citizen for the same crimes.

If that could have been you, then you better take a good hard and sober look at your drinking habits, and see who is enabling you to make such serious behavior decisions. People who knew Frigoli also knew he had a bad drinking problem. All the while "tolerating" his behavior. Is it any wonder that a lawyer to (remain unnamed) proved that there is a "police conspiracy" and code of silence this past week? Each of us better take a long look at ourselves and see who we enable...A little tough love can can open peoples eyes, and inspire some serious soul searching. We can all do better people....

I believe 8yrs is what Casper got for also killing two people while drunk.

Probably the majority of people in this country have gotten behind the wheel at least once when they shouldn't have, and by that token it could happen to anybody. However most bad shit that happens in life is due to the law of probability, sounds like Joe had a serious drinking problem and it was only a matter of time.

Everybody needs to take note of this and act accordingly and those of you that fit into that high probability category, get into a program and find something else in life to pass the time. You'd be suprised how many cool things there are to do in life without pouring alot of alcohol into your body. Your body will thank you, your wallet will thank you and your family will thank you.

By the time they buried the one who hadn't been wearing his seat belt, the story had morphed into "They hit a garage."

A lot of the time, you honestly have to wonder of the media, "What skin is it off your nose" to report something straight?

Many of us are lucky we that a similar tragedy never occurred to us. That being said, I grew up quick and knocked that knocked that stupid stuff off pretty soon after getting on the job. I didn't need help doing it, I just know right from wrong.

If you have a problem, get help. If you see a problem, force help upon them. It may not work, but if it does, you saved a life; maybe theirs or maybe that of someone else.

The same goes for corrupt activities. Don't ignore it and try to turn your back, just so you don't have to be a "rat.". If you do, you might end up being complicit in the act. Doing that just might make you a co-conspirator. Enough is enough.

Now that does not mean you have to hammer everyone you stop for being late on a red, including police. After all, we give breaks (i.e. use discretion) with/to all kinds of people. Let the attitude and the seriousness of the situation dictate your response.

I worked part-time in an affluent suburb while on the job at CPD and I stopped about 10 to 15 cars per shift (radar is nice.) I averaged two tickets per shift, the rest were verbal warnings. The only copper I ever stopped was CPD (two-years on the job, hairgel) and the attitude he gave me was beyond belief. Said I didn't know what "being the police" meant, and I should go on a ride-along with real police, etc. Then I showed him my CPD sergeant's star and told him this part-time job pays my mortgage and perhaps I would go on that ride-along to perhaps help him mature. I watched him turn from tough-guy to an apologetic weasel in about 1.2 seconds. Yes I gave him a break; bot because he was the police, but because he nearly cried.

Stay safe...

Not tagging the wall, tagging the green 18th Street (Highway exit) sign. Quite a challenging "BOMB" (graffiti hit), since that sign can only be accessed by climbing up the pole from road level, and the road is elevated there. A much harder "BOMB" than the below link. Still, everyone involved was drunk, yeah, dead guys too. And everyone lost everything.

He did something FUCKING STUPID, Plain and simple. He deserves to be in prison.. Those kids could have been YOUR kids or my kids.. regardless of what they were or were not doing.. doesn't change the fact that 2 people are dead because of a drunks actions. He is an adult and a Chicago police detective who is held to a higher standard and must be responsible... It seems we just never fucking learn. When are we ever going to learn and stop fucking up?? We are the laughing stock of law enforcement. Abbate, drunks, dope dealers what the fuck!!?? I didn't sign up for this shit did you people? Did you sign up to be a shameful police officer..who is laughed at and looked upon as corrupt or disgraceful? I didn't and if you did then get the fuck off this job because you will be next. Fuck any of you pricks who are going to tell me I'm a jagoff for my opinion..It's high time we tightened our shit up and stopped fucking up and play the game straight like the fucking adults we are supposed to be. For Christ sake.. we are police officers and carry guns.... it's not ok to drink and drive, it's not ok to beat bar tenders, it's not ok to take payoffs from tow drivers, it's not ok to deal dope, it's not ok to steal shit from other people... Get this thru your thick skulls... YOU ARE THE POLICE. If you do these things I will be the first in line to lock YOUR ASS UP. Use your fucking brains.

I'd say it was a fair sentence. When he gets out he'll be a convicted felon in his fifty's.

Agreed. 8 years in a State facility is a long time. The press really played it up, acting like he got a big break. I don't feel bad for him, but I also don't think he got a break.

Was the tagging thing ever brought up in the trial at all or is it just urban legend? If it was brought up SHAME on the media for not giving people the whole story, AS USUAL!

11/17/2012 11:45:00 AM

He may have got 8 years, but we all know he will do 3 maybe 4 at the most. Not very much for what he did, but it's normal for crook county Illinois.

so the 2 young men were doing graffiti which most of us hate to see and pay for removal...but would you even think that is an ok reason to be "triple the legal limit" drunk and plow into their car....what if that was your son and nephew pulled over to the wall on the expressway because of car trouble and just waiting for help...how would you feel about your fellow officer speeding and drunk leaving the traffic lanes and plowing into them causing death. well I am an officer and a mom and i feel the parents anguish and anger is very justified ...esp since this was the third dui incident actually known for this alcoholic officer, stop making excuses and don t bring god into the story, this was an wanton act of evil...Dave S and others clearly need to soul search a little harder. the victims could be your own loved ones next time this type dui accident occurs.

The aboved mentioned fatal accident occurred over 3 1/2 years ago. Tragic and totally avoidable. 8 Years in prison is a light sentence, in my opinion. In addition, the CPD kept this habitual drunk and merit promoted det. on the payroll all of this time, until he reached his 20 years, so he could collect a pension when he turns 50 years old. The city that works for some, if you're the right complection with the right connections.

He resigned before the conviction so he could pull out his pension contribution to pay his attorneys. In this city all complections get preferential treatment if they have connections.

So they get on the police department, get clouted, get promoted, and sit on their fat asses for 20 years and suck off the public trough. This is a normal law abiding citizen that will spend then next six years or so in prison. You don't think that's enough? Fuck you. You want a pound of flesh.

I'm not an Obama reader but your comment shows the attitude and denial of a drunk. He killed two people while driving his vehicle drunk. That's a crime. There are some gang bangers who have not killed people. Cop or not he is only a man and a man can get punished for his crime. He was NOT a normal law abiding citizen in the fact that he would consistently drink and drive. Us sober people understand this. If he had killed my family the only safe place for him would be jail. ANYONE who thinks his punishment is harsh should become an elected official and attempt to change the law about driving drunk and make it less important. Lol HA! Yeah that's a good one you drunk loser. Joseph Frugoli is a loser, criminal, and will be for the rest of his life. He was a good guy and is now just a piece of shit an will be for the rest of his life.

Why does the Det. who lives across from me spend half his tour inside his house? Moving your unmarked to the alley doesn't stop me from seeing you. Why don't their cars have GPS as the squads do?

Oh and the department spends alot of $ looking for illegal drug use by P.O.'s which is a sliver of fraction of the alcohol abuse rate but has a soft policy for alcoholics. IMO

Man up, call IAD, put your name down as a complainant or SHUT THE FUCK UP and don't whine about it on here. Oh you don't want to be called a rat, so this is better, right? WRONG! Cause all you do is throw it out there that this is happening but nothing can be done without a complainant.

If you ever actually locked someone up and went to court you might have an idea about sentencing.

He has to do 85% of the seven years and 50% of the one year sentence.

Spoken like a typical cop who knows nothing about making DUI arrests. You'd need about 6 drinks to just pass the .08 mark. Two drinks would only put you in the .01 range. Even if your bartender was generous with the pour on those two drinks, you'd still only be about .05. You can be convicted of DUI for being under .08, but it's not very likely.

OCD for nearly 16 years now and I have enough experience to know the time given is not the time served. Not even close. Because it's on the books doesn't mean it happens once it leaves the courts. All kinds of deals can be cut for early release. Start paying attention to your cases, listen, learn, and grow up. Now go back and brag to all your fellow soft friends on how much you know. I'm assuming you work in the CAPS office because you act like it.
