Gift That Keeps Giving

  • In an annual ritual that has become as predictable if not as joyous as a New Year’s Eve countdown to midnight, Chicago drivers again will have to dig a little deeper to pay to park at meters in 2013.

Loop rates will go up 75 cents to $6.50 an hour as part of scheduled fee increases included in Mayor Richard Daley’s much-criticized 2008 lease of the city’s meters to Chicago Parking Meters LLC.

Paid street parking in neighborhoods near the Loop will rise 25 cents and reach $4 an hour. Metered spaces in the rest of Chicago also will increase by a quarter per hour, to $2, according to the company.
Still one of the greatest rip-offs in Chicago history. We have avoided downtown like the plague for years and things like this just make it easier to look to the 'burbs for things to do.

Now, now, now. The mayor gave us all a choice. If we don't want to park downtown we can ride the bus.

Yep, $6.50 an hour to park is almost more than someone that makes min wage takes home. About a 13.5% increase right?

If you don't like it then pay the 16% increase in the monthly CTA pass.

You all got 13~16% wage increases to cover it right? I know that the people on retirement with fixed income will get the money from their bonds and/or savings that now pay about 3% interest.

Can't wait for the tax cut expiration that is going to take another 2% off the top of everyone's paycheck followed by the medicare/medicaid health care and health insurance co-pay jacking we are all going to get shortly.

Shine up that riot gear. We're gonna be needing it soon. Desperate people have been know to do desperate things I've been told.

You're right about avoiding the Loop. Before long, we won't be Detroit, we'll be NYC, where no one seems to own a car because there isn't room or expense for one.
Daley should be in prison for pushing this gawdawful shitty contract through. And just think, we're stuck with it for the next 70+ years.

"We have avoided downtown like the plague for years..."

Haven't been down there for twenty years at least -- just needed to spend a few hours, catch a train to a suburb -- and had to deal with four-five hulking "homeless" in the Harold Washington Library washroom, more deranged, hulking, threatening, bellowing "homeless" along Wabash, more of the same screaming and cursing because I wouldn't buy their shit incense in the METRA underpass.

FWIW -- entirely M/1.

This is a tragedy. I was born here -- and Mr. Mayor, you can take your downtown and stick it up your behind. You'd be afraid to walk down there yourself, let alone send your wife or kids and you know it.

They just pay him to put his name on the marquee. Does he even do any legal work at that place? or does the money from the parking meters pay his salary?

Sixteen percent CTA fare increase to ride on a urine stank rapid transit system without any room to even move during rush hour.

Why doesn't the fire department shut this damn CTA thing down!?

We have max occupancy rules for every building and yet it's okay to jam them in the buses and trains when it comes to the CTA.

This my friends is a disaster waiting to happen! Mark my words.

We'll get the fake tears and false grimaces, and affected language when it does. No seat belts, no seats, it's an SRO crowd packed to the doors. EVERYONE INHALE THE DRIVER NEEDS TO CLOSE THE DOORS.

For this we pay a premium? For this we pay an additional 16% for a fare increase? BULLSHIT!

I don't need to travel into the city and get jacked up on the way in an overcrowded train. You guys pay for the privilege of getting your Iphone picked, or wallet or shot in the face to hear the mayor or gary tell you not to worry we got 'em on film and one day..some day, maybe we'll bring them to justice. And the justice is time served or electronic monitoring to save money for some $55 million dollar park or $300,000 per mil bike path that is running over THAT inflated budget because they can't even paint the lines right.

SCC you call this a rip off? I say it's more of an insider deal. I just love how the alderman and other city leaders say "oh well they just made an unwise move". NO. More like fraud. A sixth grader could have done the math and easily conclude that getting 1.15 billion dollars for a 75 years lease did not make financial or common sense. BTW that 1.15 billion dollars vanished in two years. Where did it go? The city leaders say it was spent on budgetary matters.

If I'm not mistaken, the original intent of parking meters was to HELP businesses by encouraging turnover, hence a quarter or two to park. Violate that & get a ticket. Of course, Gubmint saw the potential to grab money & now screws the businesses. Add B.S. fees, licensing, and all the other money grabs and at some point you're better off closing the doors, calling it a day, & stocking shelves at Menards for minimum wage. Better yet, just go on the dole.

Live downtown for fourteen years and love downtown. Wife and I ride our bikes along the lakefront (north and south) and never have had or seen any problems. We're white and never have any problems with the minorities who picnic and swim and hangout along the lakefront. We're polite and treat others politely. Don't go looking for problems and thus don't fiind them. During the warm weather we are on along the lakefront 4-5 times a week.

We ride our bikes to the art shows, air and water show, fests. Life is full and interesting experiences. We regularly go to Millennium Park and listen to free awesome concerts on beautiful summer evenings. We have never had a problem with a gang banger. Although, we do pay attention to our surroundings and don't hang out at bars at 3:00 in the morning.

When we go out to dinner we can choose Greektown (complimentary valet), Little Italy along Taylor (self-park and complimentary parking in some of the restaurants), Chinatown (there are spots that are not metered). If worse comes to worst we pay $12.00 to valet our car. I guess we can afford that "outrageous" fee.

I would venture to guess that 90% of the people affected by this parking meter fiasco helped keep Daley in power for his twenty odd years. Oh well. Tough tits.

Chicago has become a tourist trap for people from Milwaukee, Peoria and NW Indiana. If you live in the area there should be no reason to use the downtown area unless absolutely necessary. Suburbs have outstanding restaurants and other amenities.

That's what happens when former whores, bank robbers and gangbangers become elected politicians and have a say in the direction of the city.

NEVER any consequences. The aldermen rubber stamped this shit because of Daley. You lemmings keep re-electing them.

He reports that on at least three occasions, he has been accosted by (initially) "friendly Amish" youth. As they approached, it became obvious that they were criminal predators who would not hesitate to wreak violence, regardless of the "politeness" of their potential vics.

He told me that he was amazed that in each instance, they fled like jackrabbits when they noticed a red dot on their chests. Understandably, like over tens of thousands similar unreported encounters in this nation, there is no paper trail to document these incidents.

Keep on pushing, you damn fools. You are well OVERDUE for a violent reckoning.

I believe this is the last price raise on the meters. 70 years left on lease and this is the last raise. I bet the mayor will break the lease to insure an election down the line. If the mayor wanted to break the back of the lease holders he could publicly announce the city no longer will I force the meters.

12/27/2012 12:55:00 PM

you're half right . the deal allowed laz to raise the prices for the 1st 5 years. and after 2013 the increases will be what ever the cost of living increase is every year after that

What good would it do to publish the names of the aldermen who voted for Daley to sell the parking meters, or better yet, the Chicago Skyway, to a private firm ? They won't be turned out of office come election time because the majority of the voters don't give a rat's keister.
Be grateful Daley did not sell-off the Jardine Water Filtration Plant to a private operator. We would really be screwed. Can you imagine a private water company jacking-up the water rates like the parking meter company is doing ? They would really hold Chicago and certain suburbs that buy Lake Michigan water hostages. Let's see how the plan to sell Midway Airport pans out. It's pathetic that taxpayer money is used to fund these operations and the mayor at his whim can lease them to private operators with no compunctions or restraint.
Who knows, mebbe the good old CTA is next in the privitazion crosshairs.

Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), Leslie Hairston (5th), Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Rey Colon (35th) and Billy Ocasio (26th)

All the pieces are in place for NOTHING to happen to him or the made members of Daley Inc.

Heaven, earth and a few choice precincts of hell were moved to put the Hollow Dude in the White House to guard against the feds doing any serious sniffing around.

No one of any sufficient stature will give a shit between two shoes about the estimated $12 Billion to $15 Billion of tax-payer treasure gone *poof* by the hand of the Stuttering Prick... Except to protect him at any and all costs because the entire political, media and judicial systems are damned as co-conspirators by a quarter century of silence, artfully dodging and intentionally looking the other way.

Whereas, if a Policeman gives someone a well deserved eye-roll?

The entire alphabet soup of political, media and investigative entities will insure the contents of the Policeman's family's underpants drawers are very publicly dumped out and displayed sunny-side up for titillation and the usual furious breast beating of "we're not going to tolerate this/we demand even MORE ACCOUNTABILITY" by every swinging dick & long dry tit with a poison pen and a slanted fucking agenda.

We'll say it again... Only the Policeman has REAL SKIN in the Chicago accountability game...

Give me some of that Koolaid, I need some, is it like Timothy Leary passed out in 1967? I don't go to those places without a 9mm loaded with +P ammo and an extra magazine. But I had my rose colored glasses stolen by a flashmob. I last rode my bike downtown along the lake several years ago and some thugs tried to steal my bike out from under me at Oak St in the middle of the day. I had to wrestle my bike away from the Cabrini savages right at Oak St Beach. Crowded sidewalk and people pretended they didn't see anything. No one helped me. Have another sip of that Koolaid and pass it over to me.

Rahm -- who doesn't have to ride them -- wanted those new L cars like that. New Yawk Style, and good for 40 years of suffering. The ONLY good thing about commuting was that you could look out over the city and be alone with your own thoughts.

Not anymore.

Not on buses either. Windows sprayed over with advertising. People with normal vision can often hardly read street signs. Problems? Elderly? Screw you.

...and of course everything is designed for "too much a on me" crowd, nothing opens.

Of course this does not bother people with no frame of reference. Never rode an old commuter train on a lovely day with doors open all the way through the train, great breeze. 35 cents to get downtown, and you felt good.

My question is this. How does a mayor sell off parking meters, skyways or anything else that the city owns?
Take Midway for example, wasn't federal funds used in its construction?
How do elected officials who are only temporary office holders sell assets that they don't legally own?
Can anyone explain this?

Why Does Abu Dhabi Own All of Chicago's Parking Meters?

"... t was December 1, 2008. That morning would be the first time that the Chicago City Council would be formally notified that Mayor Richard Daley had struck a deal with Morgan Stanley to lease all of Chicago's parking meters for seventy-five years. The final amount of the bid was $1,156,500,000, a lump sum to be paid to the city of Chicago for seventy-five years' worth of parking meter revenue.
...He then gave them the details: he had arranged a lease deal with Morgan Stanley, which put together a consortium of investors which in turn put a newly created company called Chicago Parking Meters LLC in charge of the city's meters. There was no mention of who the investors were or who the other bidders might have been. ... The council at this time has no idea who's actually behind the deal. "We were never informed," says Hairston. "Not even later."

But while the City of Chicago was deliberating on whether to sell their parking meter system to Morgan Stanley--which they ultimately decided to do--the Wall Street megabank was making plans to offload the parking meters to a third party.

[The investment] process involved [Morgan Stanley]'s Infrastructure group going on a road tour to ask people with lots of cash to pony up. It was these guys from Morgan's Infrastructure desk who took their presentation to the Middle East and pitched Chicago's parking meters to a room full of bankers and analysts in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, who ultimately agreed to purchase a large stake.

Within two months of selling its parking meters to a coalition of U.S. and Western investors led by Morgan Stanley, Chicago's parking meters came under new, foreign ownership.

So basically Morgan Stanley found a bunch of investors, including themselves, to put up over a billion dollars in December 2008; a big chunk of those investors then bailed out to make way in February 2009 for this Deeside Investments, which was 49.9 percent owned by Abu Dhabi and 50.1 percent owned by a company called Redoma SARL, about which nothing was known except that it had an address in Luxembourg.

Taibbi calls this a "bait and switch" pulled by Morgan Stanley on Chicago. He explains why this is about more than just parking meters. Now if city officials want to do anything that might disrupt parking meter revenue -- let's say close down parking for a street festival or parade -- they need to get the approval of those meters' shadowy, foreign owners. They also need approval to change parking hours or fees. The new ownership has already made unwelcome changes, ending the previous policy of allowing free parking on holidays. But not only did Chicago cede the operation of an entire segment of the city to mysterious private investors -- Taibbi says they could have gotten four times as much money for it, up to $5 billion. "
