Everyone Raising Taxes

  • Hoping to ward off another credit rating downgrade, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said Wednesday that she will soon present a plan to reform the county’s underfunded pension system.

And she’s leaving the door open to hiking property, sales and other taxes.

When asked repeatedly about the possibility of tax increases, Preckwinkle responded: “We’re looking at all the options. Everything is on the table.”
The democrats' solution to everything. Nothing ever on the "cut spending" side, always with the tax hikes. No wonder everyone is leaving.

How many Bobbie Steeles are sucking the county pension system dry? For the uninformed, Bobbie Steele was a $95,000 county commissioner who held the board presidency when Stroger stroked out (along with the approx $185,000 salary) and after stepping down, retired with a pension based on that bloated salary. She draws yearly more in pension than she drew a year as a commissioner.

She and those like her are killing the pensions but everyone is blaming the regular worker. Typical bs

At least Toni wants to leave her retires alone. She doesn't to cut their COLA. Future retires would see lesser amounts.

Raising taxes is not always bad. Do you want Illinois to be like Texas? They are considering lowering their sales tax a half percent and maybe lowering property taxes. They don't have an income tax or they would be lowering that. In that poor benighted state teachers make a third less than in Illinois.

______________

IF by future you mean like next year, then retirees feel my pain. I don't care if they cut you. Why should you get the full cola because you managed to get out one year before I did. If they cut mine, cut yours because I had no time to plan for these cuts.

Feel our pain. It shouldn't be one way.

Cut mine, cut retirees. That simple.

City and county incomes taxes are coming.

The more they say they are not coming, the more I think they are.

And you can go ahead and blame hedge fund managers, ratings agencies, Geo. Bush.....that right-wing man behind the tree.....whomever.

The problem is chronic overspending by corrupt Democrats.
Keep them in office, and the problem only gets worse.

Every pension now being attacked. Raising taxes now too.
And we "promise" to make our mandated contributions for cuts in benefits. And we leave these politicians in charge.

We are truly our own worst enemy. Don't believe their cries of the state, county, and city are broke. They have money for whatever they deem important. It's just they don't support public safety right now.

--->> 'Raising taxes is not always bad.' <<---
Fuck you. You're an idiot.

--->> 'Do you want Illinois to be like Texas?' <<---
You're goddamn right I do. If it wasn't for the oppressive heat plus high humidity in some parts, like Houston, Texas would be heaven on earth.

--->> 'They are considering lowering their sales tax a half percent and maybe lowering property taxes.' <<---
Gee, and morons like you probably wonder why Texas' economy is booming, one of the best in the USA, unemployment is way below average, and people and businesses are flocking there in droves, fleeing high tax states like Kalifornia, Noo Yuk, and Illinois!

--->> 'They don't have an income tax or they would be lowering that.' <<---
And the problem with that is exactly what, you dimwit.

--->> 'In that poor benighted state teachers make a third less than in Illinois.'<<---
Bullshit, prove it, provide a link. And Sparky I'd be careful throwing words like 'benighted' around in regards to the folks of Texas and teachers when you're in Illinois, the 'Land of Morons', and Chicago's schools and its *top notch* teachers are turning out a bunch of functional illiterates. With that stellar performance, they aren't worth half the goddamn pay they get now!

In closing, fuck off.

Preckwinkle knows that the only way changes will fly in court is if the retires current benefits are left alone.

Hard to cut taxes unless you cut into wages/benefits/social programs. When you have government employees making more, much more, in pay and benefits with an early retirement age then any of their counterparts in private industry, it costs, and costs big. Personnel costs account for a large portion of the budget. Then add in county hospital where anyone can come from anywhere and get free medical care, the cost of the court system which is laden with patronage and you can see why taxes will go up. Why do county employees get to retire at age 50?

Yes, but the teachers choose to stay there and the state is prospering. Everytime the democrats cry for more money for the " children" it goes into the pockets of the teachers and unions who in turn bribe the legislators. There is no correlation between increased spending and success in the classroom. Proven time and time again.

You have that right. Just checked with the BGA and she is getting a pension of $157,000 Even if she made $187,000 and received 80% it doesnt come out to $157,000

Yes, I would like Illinois to be more like Texas. Lower taxes and more government efficiency is always a good thing. As far as the school teachers are concerned the vast majority of them are overpaid and underworked.

Toni 'Sensible Shoes' Prickstinkle put a $25 tax on all firearms sold within Crook Co. So...instead of buying at Cabela's in Hoff Estates (Crook) I drive another 5 minutes to GAT in E. Dundee (Kane) where they proudly advertise "...no Cook County Taxes..." Brilliant way to generate new 'rev-new' Toni.

RE: pensions. Open up the annual audit - city or county. 2/3 of the budget is personnel. Sorry but we can't easily cut our way out of this unless you're advocating fewer cops and firefighters (though there sure are a lot of people standing around with shovels so maybe we can get rid of them). I'm not defending Rahm or Preckwinkle but if you want to lay blame, go back to the elected officials that were around 15 years ago.

"if you want to lay blame, go back to the elected officials that were around 15 years ago."

I tend to agree with this. Can you imagine what it's going to be like here 15 years from NOW?

Anyway, I run a business and I can barely pay my state, federal and property taxes. If a county tax is instituted, I will be house shopping in Indiana the next day.

it's the past retirees who are sucking the taxpayer tit, long after their uselessness has ended.

and don't bother crying me a river over their years of 'public service'.

if i were as they have been, i'd be taking orders, cash only and up front, for the timely conclusions of their illustrious careers.
