Action Over Freed Cop Killer

This was covered in the comment sections and the FOP even put up a post:
  • Hey guys, kinda looking for a short notice quick favor. I'm a Cicero Firefighter now, but I am the son of a Chicago Police Officer that was killed in the line of duty on May 21, 1988. He was killed down the street from the house we lived in in the Hegewisch neighborhood. All of his killers have been released from prison, the last two were paroled on March 25, 1999. One of those men, Dean Chavez, one of the more brutal of the five has since come back to the neighborhood and has been coaching youth baseball in the Hegewisch Babe Ruth League, we were able to have him removed on June 23 of this year by the President of National Babe Ruth Leagues (the local charter there is run by his friends). Dean has been claiming that we are violating his civil rights by having him removed from his position and has gone to the media (nothing has been printed or aired yet, but he is trying).

On July 30 at 7PM the Babe Ruth League is having an open meeting at Steve's Lounge in Hegewisch (13200 S Baltimore Ave, Chicago, IL 60633). Dean is planning on bringing family, friends, players, players parents (the few players/parents that DO support him) to the meeting to show support for him and why he deserves to be a role model to these young kids. My family is hoping to reach as many police and firefighters as would be able to make it to the meeting to show the Babe Ruth League that we will not stand for murderers mentoring young minds, I would also like to pressure the entire Babe Ruth Board to step down due to their gross negligence in keeping Dean in as a coach while having full knowledge of this man's history, especially in the neighborhood that he caused so much harm to. Officers, if you can help me get the word out, that would be much appreciated. Thank you!
A cop killer should pretty much rot in hell as far as we're concerned. He certainly shouldn't be coaching coppers' kids in what is widely known as a cops' neighborhood. And that Board ought to be truly ashamed even having this guy on their radar.

There's a few trolls that have been baiting in the comment sections lately. Spare us the crap about "he paid his debt" or other such nonsense - some debts are never repaid. Your comments will be deleted without ever seeing the light of day.

Get to Hegewisch.

It's both depressing and amazing how self-entitled cop-murderers get freed.

Prison is a great place to learn to live a lie, rather than admit the truth and repent.

You who believe in his purity are fools. Prison does not purify the soul. It poisons it.

And in that delusional frame of mind, this murderer, who "escaped" true justice in a corrupt state, feels entitled to posture regarding his "right" to belong in a law-abiding society, COACHING INNOCENT CHILDREN OF LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS?

Any single Babe Ruth League Board member who votes for this Chicago Police Department's murderer's re-instatement, votes anti Law Enforcement!

A corrupt Illinois court system freed these cop-killers.

Babe Ruth League, you will follow in the footsteps of corruption, and in the footsteps of a cold-blooded killer of an honorable Chicago Police Officer, if you open the door to the devil, aka, cop-murderer Dean Chavez.

There will be no place in heaven for any one of you who sides with the cold-blooded murderer of a Chicago Police Officer, regardless of the fact that he spent time in prison.

Go away, Chavez. Far, far away.

From innocent children.

Stop harassing the reputable community in which you took an innocent and highly valued life...one so much more highly valued than your gang of cop-murderers.

You are not so valued, nor welcome, to entertain your sanctimonious hypocricy here.

Nor is your thinly-veiled lack of morals.

Nor is your disregard for the sanctity of human life.

Nor is your malicious attempt to sway a grieving community to favor the person who robbed them of one of their finest.

Especially that of a Chicago Police Department Officer.

Vote NO to Dean Chavez. Always and Forever.

This POS, I won't mention his name, had three squares per day, watched TV, worked out, had the use of reading material, saw his family on visits and now that he and his POS friends are out of jail it is Miller Time for them. Never having to look back. Now being on the outside enjoying family, friends, BBQs and yes baseball games.

Eleven years for a cop killer.

And what does the dead officer have to enjoy? Nothing! He enjoys not the past, the present or look forward to the future. His family will always live with the fond memories of when he was alive, mourn when he was murdered, grieve at those family events that he enjoyed attending and missing him, and everyday look forward to not having him in their lives.

Eleven years for this POS! Eternity is not near enough time for this POS to pay for murdering this officer.

Mother of g-d, Chavez bashes Officer Mathews' head in with a baseball bat & another of the five attackers crack his head open with a cinder block and all they are sentenced to is 27 years!!!!

And they have been released early????

And now Chavez is a coach of a Babe Ruth League baseball team thats roster is filled with the children of policemen!

Wow...just unbelievable.

I read about the brutal attack here:

I don't care Chavez was only 18 and or drunk.
You have to be one evil soul to smash a man's head in like that.

All five should have been given life.

The fact they are out is bad enough, but to put Chavez in such a position to be accessible to the children of police brothers and sisters and in the same community of the victim no less. That is another victimization of the victims family and the community!

This must stop!

My heart goes out the the Mathews family.

I will be there to show my support to this family.

5 Indicted In Killing Of Officer
May 24, 1988|By Matt O`Connor.

Five Far South Side men were indicted on murder charges Monday in the brutal beating death of an off-duty Chicago police officer, who was killed near Wolf Lake after he helped to break up a weekend drag racing party.

Off-duty Chicago police officer John Matthews had left his home late Friday night to help disperse a drag racers` party-doing what fellow officers had come to expect of the ``quiet`` and ``aggressive`` man.

FOR THE RECORD - Correction.
The name of the murder victim is mispelled in this story. The correct spelling is John Mathews.

But Matthews, 27, was beaten to death about midnight after returning to the spot where he and two other officers had broken up the group, about a block from his new home near 131st Street and Avenue M, police said.

At a brief appearance in Violence Court amid tight security, the five suspects were ordered held without bond in Cook County Jail by Criminal Court Judge Michael Bolan.

Assistant State`s Attorney John Brady said the death penalty will be sought against the five men: James Kennedy, 24; Ralph Gabriel, 22; Edward Manzo, 19; Tony Chavez, 22; and his brother Dean Chavez, 18.

The five also were indicted for armed violence, armed robbery, robbery, aggravated unlawful restraint, mob action and disarming a police officer.

Brady said Kennedy, Manzo and Dean Chavez gave statements to police saying that Matthews was attacked as the five, armed with two baseball bats and a crowbar, went looking for vandals who slashed a tire on one of their two cars.

According to a statement by Dean Chavez, Matthews identified himself as a police officer after Tony Chavez asked about the damage to the car. Kennedy then struck Matthews on the head from behind with a bat, Brady said Chavez told authorities.

The others joined, hitting Matthews, 27, with the bats and crowbar and punching and kicking him, Brady said.

During the struggle, Matthews` service revolver fired once before being knocked out of his hand and falling to the muddy ground by the lake.

Brady said Anthony Chavez allegedly took Matthews` wallet and police badge before hitting the officer on the head with a large brick.

Each of the three defendants who gave statement to police said Matthews

``stopped moving then,`` Brady said.

Matthews`s skull was broken, five fingers were fractured and and his body was convered with bruises and contusions, Brady said.

Police officers were shocked when they learned the muddied, battered body they discovered a foot from the shore of Wolf Lake early Saturday morning was that of Matthews. It took nearly seven hours to identify the body.

Tony Chavez and Gabriel were arrested at 2:30 a.m. Sunday in a third-floor apartment at 3052 N. Ashland Ave. where relatives of Gabriel lived, police said. Gabriel had been home for two days on a 30-day Army furlough from his post in West Germany. Kennedy was arrested at 5 a.m. Sunday at 3924 Elm St. in East Chicago, Ind., at the home of a friend.

Manzo and Dean Chavez were arrested and charged Saturday.

These parasites need to be put down ASAP.......

"Manzo said that Dean hit Mathews in the head with a concrete block. Then Anthony told Manzo to help look for the gun and to throw Mathews in the lake. They did not find the gun. Manzo, Dean and Kennedy picked up Mathews and moved him to the shore of the Lake, about 40 feet away.

After they dropped Mathews' body, Dean picked up a baseball bat and said, "Do you still want to fuck with me. Well I'll show you," and hit Mathews five times in the head with the baseball bat"

And now this piece of dog shit is gonna be coaching kids on how to use a baseball bat??

The following is an excerpt from the court decision, People v. Chavez, that others here have referenced:

"Manzo said that Dean hit Mathews in the head with a concrete block. Then Anthony told Manzo to help look for the gun and to throw Mathews in the lake. They did not find the gun. Manzo, Dean and Kennedy picked up Mathews and moved him to the shore of the Lake, about 40 feet away. After they dropped Mathews' body, Dean picked up a baseball bat and said, "Do you still want to fuck with me. Well I'll show you," and hit Mathews five times in the head with the baseball bat."

After reading this, it's sickening that Dean Chavez has any affiliation with any baseball league.

These murders should have been convicted of 1st degree murder and should have received the death penalty. But, due to the corrupt legal system, the corrupt defense attorney's, and the liberal judge in this case, "other circumstances" were "cooked up and inaccurate" in order to protect the murders from the death penalty. Sadly justice was not done...and here we are again dealing with this murderous felon and reliving the memories of that horrible day when an innocent young man was so horribly murdered and taken from his young wife and 3 very young children. Sometimes it seems that the sadness and the loss this family suffered will never end.

PLEASE SHOW UP! You don't have to say or do anything. Just wear a CPD shirt of any kind and stand on the sidewalk. Don't even enter the building if you don't want to. Just let those attending see you out there. PLEASE! This is for the fallen officers who died at the hands of who now teach/ coach our very own police children. Don't let this happen.

What possible defense could these assholes possibly put up. they beat t6his poor guy to death, just about tortured him. I was a PO in Gang Crimes north at that time and they sent us down to that shithole 4th district to stir up shit and make them pay. that was when we had bosses with BALLS. If this was to today, the bad guys Momas would say that the police set their baby boy. This Dean chavez should not be teaching anyone anything and this Babe ruth League has to launch his ass. He will never be rehabilitated ever, I don't care what some liberal social worker says.

OMG how sad. I am so sorry. RIP to the dear police officer, God bless him and his family. Only 10 years? That's absolutely pathetic. That piece of shit should have gotten the death penalty!
How could this Babe Ruth outfit even want someone like that around kids? And what's wrong with parents who would put their kids in harms way by letting them be subjected to a cold blooded murderer?!
My thoughts and prayers go out to you dear police officer and your family. :-( :-( :-(

Hi all, thank you very much for all of the support. My family and I look forward to seeing everyone who can make it to the meeting. The League tried to close the meeting to just parents, coaches, players, however the owners of the business will have none of that and will not allow anyone to be blocked access. Several stories have run so far, and there will be media tomorrow, I have linked the stories below. Again, Dean Chavez is no longer a coach and says he does not want to be a coach. My purpose is to get board member resignations for their complete negligence in handling their friend, my fathers murderer, Dean Chavez. Overall, I would like to effect some change nationally, but that will take a lot more time than a meeting tomorrow!

I plan to continue to handle myself in a professional manner as any prior service Marine would (sorry I went to the fire side, guys, I'm sure you can understand), and I hope everyone that comes to support my mother and my family will do the same.

Again, thank you for this outpouring of support!

Joey Mathews

Mother of g-d, Chavez bashes Officer Mathews' head in with a baseball bat & another of the five attackers crack his head open with a cinder block and all they are sentenced to is 27 years!!!!

And they have been released early????

And now Chavez is a coach of a Babe Ruth League baseball team thats roster is filled with the children of policemen!

Wow...just unbelievable.

I read about the brutal attack here:

I've got to vent. Dean and his brother were both fucking bullies and violent assholes as teenagers and as they turned young adults. Always committing crimes, always bullying people, always beating people, total jagoffs. then they committed this terrible terrible and vicious crime to a Chicago Police Officer. Dean is still a bully after he served his short sentence and even got locked up again after her was paroled out and served more time. funny, I don't see the 10th ward alderman chiming in anywhere. why, because poop is his friend. friend from the neighborhood and current friend on facebook. check it out. ask around. its common knowledge. that fact disturbs me even more.

Lets get a congressman and pass a law that convicted violent felons can not coach youth sports or be associated with them. Should be easy enough.

Watch Dean not show like the coward he is. The entire baseball board needs to do the right thing and just step down. They knew his history and still let him be around all these children. Come on!

Unfortunately only those found to be sex offenders or child related offenses are denied into the league. All other offenses are left to the local league board to decide.

You guys can check Dean S. Chavez (DOB 1/4/1969) yourselves. In 2005 he was convicted of domestic battery of a 15 year old. However, to protect the victim, the league can only be notified that there was a domestic battery, nothing about the age of the victim. That's another loophole Babe Ruth was able to take advantage of.

Update on the replacement board. Alderman Pope still has not replaced the board like he stated he would. Old board members bashing drunk lynch mob of cops for forcing them to resign on Hegewisch facebook pages. The NUMBER 1 basher is a brother of one of our own. Said they were in fear of their lives.
