Electronic Monitoring Hack

  • The Cook County Sheriff’s office is warning its officers to watch out for state parolees who have tampered with their electronic monitoring.

The heading says: “Officer Safety Alert” – and it’s from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to all patrol and street units – warning about state parolees on electronic monitoring who have tampered with the device and are driving around undetected.
But it isn't a "significant" issue:
  • Tom Shaer, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Corrections, says  state parolees interfering with their electronic monitoring is “not a major problem” and he says there’s been no recent uptick in incidents.

“We are not encountering a significant issue here.”
We don't know about that - any time someone "paroled" to electronic monitoring who is able to circumvent the restrictions supposedly placed on them through human ingenuity....well, that pretty much means they're getting away without being punished. That IS significant to any thinking person.

And how are they accomplishing this?
  • But Shaer says the state has told the Cook County Sheriff’s office to watch out for any state parolees driving with a monitoring box plugged into their car – a device that should be at home.
So they've somehow adapted the monitor box to be able to be powered by the car cigarette lighter. The sheriff's automated calling system buzzes the box, the "inmate" scans whatever he has to scan into the box, the sheriff thinks that the "inmate," (actually an "out-mate" now) is at home behaving. No GPS in the boxes, so no one is the wiser...until they get caught outside after curfew.

They don't violate them for anything anyway. So who gives a shit any more? These convicts learn right away that all the threats are empty promises and that they won't be going back to prison.

Kind of like if you threaten a child with a spanking and never follow through. This state and city are finished. Thank the socialists for another failed policy.

This is crazy, As far as I know the monitoring box has to be plugged into a wireline home phone. Get more than so many feet from the box, it trips and calls IDOC, get some metal object blocking the signal, it trips, unplug it or have a power outage, it trips.

...and there was a guy swimmin at the Montrose riot with one of these on? WTF?

It's not a "significant issue" because Dart doesn't need any more bad press leading up to his run for mayor next year.

You can buy a thing that plugs into your cigarette lighter and gives you an outlet like in your house. I've got one to charge my computer when traveling.

All they need is a wireless internet connection, Magic Jack or Basic Talk ......rings the phone anywhere you want it to but shows up as your home....
Maybe go 21st century and incorporate GPS into the bands...
