Lewis Out

So does Fioretti make a legit run? Or was he the vote-splitter?
  • Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis will not pursue a bid for Chicago mayor, the coordinator of the committee that was exploring a run announced Monday.

Lewis, 61, had been seen as a potentially strong challenger to Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the February election.  Her series of speaking engagements around the city was interrupted last week when she was hospitalized after becoming sick at home. Union officials said she underwent surgery and was suffering from a “serious illness,” but have provided few other details about what is wrong with her.
Our guess? Cancer. [UPDATE: It's cancer]

In the meantime, Lewis's statement by her people had no mention of maybe endorsing someone other than Rahm. She appears to hate his guts and there was no love lost in return either. Either Fioretti starts making the right moves or he was the plant all along.

SCC, several news sources quoted a formal press release from Lewis' people tonight, saying she has a cancerous brain tumor and will undergo chemo and she is not running and has told them to shut the signature-gathering down.

Two local channels ran with it on the ten o'clock news.

Christopher Ware for Mayor of Chicago

The race for Mayor of Chicago

New candidate for Mayor

October 14, 2014: If you haven’t been satisfied by the list of candidates that have entered the race for Mayor, well this may be the candidate for you. A dynamic, charismatic, young man who is objective and non-biased, did I fail to mention that he also one of Chicago’s finest. His name is Christopher Ware, and he is an 18year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, and he has started a grass roots campaign.

I don't care if it's Jesse Jackson. I will vote for the person that has the best chance to unseat this little nine fingered hobgoblin.

They will only have four years to mess things up with no real machine in place. Then, four years from now, we might see some real candidates. RAHM MUST GO AT ANY PRICE.

He had a particularly virulent form of a cancerous tumor that was the size of a walnut that could not be cut out. Talking a 5% chance of living a year. Had seeds implanted, lived a dozen more years and had four kids during those years. Ended up dying from booze/liver problems and not cancer. It can be beat, even the worst of worst at times. SCC c'mon you know better. In Chicago's elections the goal is to force a run-off, which happens if no single candidate reaches 50+ percent. The more candidates that run gives each and every voter a flavor that closely matches their wishes; i.e. one less vote for Rahm, the "broad" candidate. Had both Lewis AND Alderman Bob run, the odds of a run-off INCREASE not decrease. And forcing a run-off is the name of the game if you want Rahm out.

Sad to hear that Karen Lewis condition is a lot worse than expected, for anyone to have that disease is a terrible ordeal. I hope she can overcome the stress of treatment.
Her tenacity and character are true and she earned my support a long time ago. I wish her and her family well.
Given her dropping out of the election, I certainly will not vote for Rahm-Rauner or any of their 1%, million dollar fund raising hobnob cheats.
Fioretti needs to bring it up a notch. Chicago doesn't need a phony former chief of staff who is as out of touch with the hard working people he should be representing.

Given a choice between Fioretti, or Rahm, it's Fioretti all the way. If re-elected, Rahm is coming after our pensions. By raising the rates that retirees pay for health insurance, Rahm is diminishing their pensions without calling it that. Liberals, through their use of language, are very good at shaping the debate to favor their views. Active guys are next.

Attn: Ms. Lewis --

Hey, babe.

While I detest a great deal of what you currently stand for, I feel that, as mayor, you would have had a lot more thrice-removed, well-insulated, intellectually-based (as opposed to experientially-based) compassion for the genuinely needy here -- the poor people you never see out your front window because they're very quietly picking up aluminum soda cans out behind your garage at 2 AM -- than the savage Emanuel Brothers/Rauner axis.

I perceive your current "concern" as being more theoretical than practical -- but many things are fungible.

I have always envisioned you as a sort of Hugo Chavez in a sack dress. (Hope I got you laughing.) The red T-shirts did rather lead the way in the formation of that impression.

I wish that we could have a roaring great long conversation around the fire pit, slathered on icy German beer and near comatose from huge venison burgers. You have a fine mind, even if it is temporarily (I always hold out hope for an awakening to the truth) misdirected.

Although I know that we would currently disagree on many points when it comes down to everyday reality, I nonetheless empathise, sympathize with your current difficulties, and will remember you in my prayers for a safe and speedy recovery.

I don't necessarily want you as Mayor -- you should go and get a lot of rest when you get off chemo, go back to simple things like trees and flowers and birds -- but I feel that you would make a grand conversational adversary, at the very least.

"If two people agree about absolutely everything, it merely means that one of them is not necessary."

God bless. Stay safe. Check back with us soon.

Best wishes.
