Judge Reassigned for Keeping Order

  • A Cook County judge has been removed from her post in criminal court following allegations that she wrongly ordered litigants locked up for contempt of court.

The Cook County Circuit Court's executive committee, a panel of supervising judges, took the rare action against Judge Gloria Chevere after preliminarily concluding that her rulings may have resulted in "possible threat of injury to the public and to the orderly administration of justice," according to a news release issued Wednesday by the office of Chief Judge Timothy Evans.

The news release was not specific about the rulings. However, an investigative report released about a week ago by Medill Watchdog and WGN-TV found that Chevere sent defendants to jail for contempt 30 times over the past four years.
Gee, seven times a year, she laid down the law in her court room and now she's on the hot seat? Maybe the question should be, "Why isn't every one else taking charge of their court rooms?" Expecting a certain amount of decorum in the courts isn't untoward. We actually remember a time that you wouldn't appear in court if you weren't in a suit and tie (except the over-nighters.)

And who the hell is taking the Medill Watchdog whiners seriously? Aren't they associated with the Innocence assholes who got Porter out of a multiple murder? How do they have any credibility?

The statement that "her rulings may have resulted in "possible threat of injury to the public and to the orderly administration of justice" is a joke of immense proportions, especially considering the number of judges who went to prison over the years and the fact that the Feds had to shut down any number of investigations so that there would still be judges on the bench. Lax sentencing, disregarding the law and making it up as they go along are more like to affect the "administration of justice" than telling some gang banging assholes to pull up their pants, straighten out their shirts and address the court with a modicum of respect.

Been in front of her many times and she doesn't play around. The call is quick and she likes the police. Probably signs more sw"s than any other judge and is always available for a meet.

A Judge who imposes order....can't have that. A Judge who does her job, DEFINITELY can't have that. Why aren't they calling her "Racist"? Oh yeah, "SHE" is a minority. Thanks for all you have done Judge Chevere. Hope to see you on the bench again soon.

With Crook Co judges never locking anyone up for serious crimes, why the hell would entering a courtroom with your ass hanging out like a baboon affect the orderly administration of justice???

A judges first responsibility is making legal rulings based on the law. Chevere is a terrible judge when it comes to interpreting the law. She's a political hack appointee who puts on a good dog and pony show for the sheeple in court.

Chevere is the judge who was cutting the call short and going home early a couple years ago on a daily basis.

Judge Chevere doesn't put up with BS in her court room. She is fair, but will not be pushed around. Would this have happened if the judge was male?

Stay the course Judge.

What about Judge Cannon, who was sending convicted armed robbers to "boot camp," despite mandatory sentencing laws requiring something a bit harsher:

Indeed, she ran her call efficiently and with authority. She didn't tolerate disrespect or interruptions. Sadly, she is the exception and not the rule, though this is EXACTLY HOW ALL JUDGES should run their call. How much more appeasement to criminals can Cook County offer?

"Why isn't every one else taking charge of their court rooms?"

Because this is Crook County where the crooks run the show.

God forbid we have a Judge who actually demands respect and order in her courtroom.

The politicians are probably worried that the Judge is upsetting their constituency and they won't get the crooks votes or the crooks help in getting out the vote.

This is the end of society as we know it. The clowns are now running the circus.

Thank you Judge Chevere for all that you have done in the past. You are truly one of the best judges that are sitting on the bench.

All is can say is....Karma is a bitch. They (the ones who had you removed) got a big helping coming heir way.

Shes a great judge. One of the few left with any "balls" and she's a woman, obviously. In branch 35 if dude wasn't there when his name was called...warrant, if dudes pants were sagging past his ass...contempt, if dudes cell phone went off it was confiscated. Why is any of this a problem?

My son was in her court as a witness last month. I accompanied my son as I was off that day and figured we would go to Central Gyros afterward for lunch. (which we did it was delicious)

She ran that court in an excellent, respectful, business-like manner. The judge explained the simple rules of the court and when the morons violated them she corrected them in a mild manner.

God forbid anyone enforces simple rules of conduct.

Thank you Judge Gloria Chevere for being correct, trying to foster the right side of decorum, respect and all around good manners in the court room. Hold your head way up high...you are the example of fine character...please don't let others sway you away from your position. Many thank you-s again.

I saw that story and was trying to figure out what she was doing that was wrong. If my kid had to go before a judge he would certainly be in a coat and tie.
They interviewed one kid who pretty much needed subtitles to be understood.

How can you knock her? She was a fantastic judge. No nonsense who would jail the gang bangers in a heartbeat. The ones who are knocking her on here are most likely dog asses who hate court to begin with or have family members that are gang members. Very typical of cop's on this job. Do nothing's that don't inforce the law and the ones that do are the ones that you complain about. I see it all the time in my district . Every single infraction of the law is petty. If you enforce it than your thirsty. Way too many dogs on this department here collecting pay checks. Very poor supervision and too much favoritism. 21 years down and 5 more to go. Then this city and everyone on this job can go fuck themselves.

So what your saying is that she is no different than any other judge in crook county. They are all political. And name me one judge that doesn't cut a call early for personal reasons. In the 90's 26th st was a ghost town on Wednesdays when all the judges went golfing.
What makes her different is that she stood up for decorum, she expected her court call be treated with respect. You use the word interpretation, it is one persons view. That's why there are more than one justice sitting on Supreme Court hearings.

I've met her at an assignment and she's a great lady who lives in the district and likes the police. I've also been before her at 51st and Wentworth and she's fair and stern. The qualities that a judge predicates their decisions on every where else but Cook County. She's an example of effective judicial conduct and should be commended for not pandering to weak minded politicians and fellow judges.

Well, I guess I'll just do my part to overload the court call, and see how the new judge likes it.
Last time I checked, I get paid extra for court, and it actually costs the city and county money when I make an arrest. After this bullshit contract, I was already getting psyched to jam the docket, bring in zero revenue, and let the back logs roll. Now I have yet another reason.
Chicago/Cook County politics...I love this game.

If this judge was any red state this would be a badge of honor.
Here in Crook County, Illinois she gets dumped.
Because she demands these mopes have a crumb of respect for the law and theirselves.
What a crock of shit.
