Officer Stripped

  • An off-duty Chicago Police officer has been stripped of his arrest powers after he allegedly fired multiple times at an off-duty suburban cop who tried to pull him over after suspecting he was driving drunk, law enforcement sources said Monday.

No one was hit by the gunfire, which happened about 4 p.m. Sunday near the Chicago Police Department’s Marquette Park District station on the Southwest Side.

Charges are pending against the 52-year-old Chicago cop, who was assigned to the Marquette Park District.

“If the allegations are true, the actions and behavior demonstrated by this officer are beyond unacceptable, have absolutely no place in our department, and he will be separated from CPD,” according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.

The off-duty Chicago cop was driving his personal vehicle with a fellow off-duty Chicago officer in the passenger seat when an off-duty Merrionette Park police officer pulled his vehicle behind them at 111th and Kedzie.
Okay - bad idea number one: pulling over cars off-duty. You have no radio, probably no bullet resistant vest, no obvious police markings on your car and usually no identifying uniform.

Bad idea number two, blasting away at a fleeing vehicle.

If you're that desperate to do police work 24/7, follow from a safe distance, call it in, let the on-duty cops handle it. That's it. That being said, bad choice number one has no bearing whatsoever on bad choice number two. Unless this guy is heavier than heavy, he's gone, and if the evidence supports the allegation, he'll be lucky to escape jail time.

SCC, are you saying that the Merrionette Park cop shot at the OD CPD as he fled? Who fired first? The way you wrote it, if I'm reading correctly makes it sound as if the off duty Chicago guy was fired upon first by a suburban off duty in a vehicle which would not identify him as a police officer. (Not making excuses for a drunk officer shooting his pistol either. Just trying to get clarificarion.) Thanks. I know the CPD officer quite well. It's a terrible mess and I hope his family will be ok.

I'm not sure who to crown as the bigger D-Bag in this scenario, but I'm leaning towards the Merrionette Park idiot for (if true) attempting a traffic stop off duty in his personal car.

And our guy?!?! 52 years old (and I'll assume at least a star on his sleeve) and he's not smart enough to not get into this type of shit? What. The. Fuck. The hairgels get a mulligan for their next fuck-up based on this stupidity.

For the couple of people griping about 011 3rd watch, so bid the fuck out. Oh I know you're a dogass but you want to say you work in 011 to make it seem like your some hot shot who worked in a bad district. Leave room for those of us who actually want to work. Hey as you say shit about the 3rd watch supervisors, do you stand there and eat the food Lt. Masters brings in for the whole watch, or eat the cookies Lt. Johnson brings in. I bet you do. Have you noticed everyone wants to take lunch between 1900-2000 hrs, I am guilty of that to, but I try to refrain. Also I have never heard that lunches were completely denied they were asked to wait until one of the 8 cars currently on lunch come up clear. I personally have never been denied when I put in a slip to be off, but I am realistic, I don't ask to be off every Saturday or Friday night. I also have never heard either Lieutenant yell at anyone. But that's o.k. keep griping dog ass, because that just makes me look even better.

Not that it any excuse for firing your gun at anyone at 4:00 on a Sunday afternoon while off duty probably after watching the Bears game, but if I'm not mistaken, aren't Merrionette Park p.o.'s all part timers.
Makes me wonder what would make any p.o. who is off duty to try to make a traffic stop in their own vehicle. In 22 it's difficult to imagine a traffic stop on duty. Can just imagine the shit this guy must pull while on duty. Look out fellas and ladies while leaving Bourbon Street.
I personally was stopped by a M. P. officer while at 111th and Spaulding. Told me I committed a violation while in Merrionette Park. Told him to go f... himself as I had come straight west bound on 111th Street from I-57. He was shocked when he found out I was a p.o.
Sure there is more to the story with this guy from M.P.

Enough is enough already with the fuck ups that make the news and reflect poorly on all of us. At some point people need to think before they act, shit doesn't get swept under the rug like it used to. Some stuff might but cameras are everywhere and shit has a way of being brought to light. The news just loves getting a hold of stories like this and beating them to death. I'm not going to be hypocritical and say I've never had a few to many and drove home before, most of us have. But, I think we need to learn from others fuck ups and not become the next news headline for doing some stupid shit on duty or off.

DO NOT pursue your attacker (especially when you HBD)

IF PURSUED head toward a well lighted and populated place preferably a police station. Flashing your lights and sounding your horn can attract the police. It is important to be going toward the police not fleeing the police. Unless in imminent danger get on your cell phone, but if you think you are under attack have your weapon handy but concentrate on your driving.

First of all, SCC didn't make the mistake of putting Marquette Park District, when script is in italics it is an excerpt from the media.

Secondly, even though the MP cop is a goof for doing all this shit off duty there is plenty to hang the CPD cop on this one, DUI, carrying firearm while intoxicated, firing said firearm while intoxicated. Of course all this is if the media story is entirely true, which isn't always the case. Lies by omission.

It's beyond stupidity to attempt making a traffic stop in your personal vehicle, while off-duty. Now, with some citizens arming themselves with the passage of conceal and carry laws, this behavior is suicidal. Both officers behaved egregious and reckless, as the drunken idiot should be fired and the merrionette officer should be terminated also. Both officer are extreme liabilities for future lawsuits..... The only police action needed was dialing 911. With 16years on the cpd, I still comprehend some of the stupid things that officers continue doing......

Mp Po exits vehicle with badge displayed in hand , goes to driver side of car , announces he is the police and informs the driver to roll down window and that he almost struck the flower guy. Unsure as to why he was driving in a wreck less manor , mp Po notices open beer in the car, driver never rolls down window and takes off. Mp Po gets back in pov and calls 911 with plate make model color and direction, 911 won't stay on the line so mp Po follows to call with future update of direction for cpd to stop this guy. Offender turns down side street mp Po at a distance is behind , offender pulls to curb mp Po stops at a distance still, both offenders exit vehicle walking tward mp Po pov , driver and fire arm in hand, points at windshield of mp Po pov , mp Po takes off around man with gun, man with gun then fires at the back of mp Po pov. Mp Po then goes right to 22 to file a report

I'm not condoning drinking and driving but with all of the police impersonators stopping people and robbing them, I can see how they thought they were being stopped by an armed police impersonator "shaking down" dui drivers. The coppers let him go back to the car and then pulled his weapon in an attempt to arrest him. Bad idea on both parts to play police while drunk. When the MP coper took off the CPD officer assumed it was an armed police impersonator attempting to run him over and flee so he fired.
Right? Wrong? I don't know. Just shows how bad things can go real fast. And thank G that the copped missed.

Another black eye? Was a 501 performed on the Officer? What was his breathalyzer result? Anybody have any details? Many here are saying it's fucked up because he shot at the Suburban Cop. Drunk or not there are plenty here who would shoot first if you are being actively pursued by a regular civilian vehicle, and that goes for the drunk and the sober. Too many coppers like to point the finger and don't sit back and think that they might have done the same. How many times have we seen it on this blog where a cop gets car jacked or seriously injured during a car jacking? Maybe the copper felt he had no choice? Regardless of what you think of him right now if these guys were actual car jackers you'd all be wishing him well after his incident. Then you'd have plenty who would say "Oh I would've killed them all." Blah blah blah. But since it was some off duty hot shot suburban cop who lives for this cop shit this guy is a black eye to the department? If he was drunk then that's the only fucked up part about this I see. Everthing else is reasonable if he was pursued a long distance why would he want to lead the offenders to his home? Maybe he felt like he had no choice or that a police station was too far. Tunnel vision is a bitch and we deal with many of these factors at work. Just because we are off duty doesn't mean we can "turn it off." To sit here and judge him on what we have read so far is unfair. Because many of you would have done the same, drunk or sober.

I am assigned to the academy. I am responsible for overseeing the quality and design of the training. Most of the instructors do a stellar job. We do have the rotten apples. We have some complete retards. These people make it pretty hard for the academy to deliver high quality training.

A firearms instructor was recently suspended for discharging firearms while on a boat. The instructor admitted that he would not have passed a breathalyzer test.

During the instructors defense, the instructor argued that the General Orders did not prohibit the discharge of firearms.

This means that the instructor did not understand what he was supposed to be teaching.

We have some real retards on the job. It is fortunate that most of the instructors at the academy have high aptitude and advanced degrees.

The lesson from these stories is do not drink, drive (including boating), and discharge firearms. Those three things do not mix too well.

Remember that we teach ethics too. Do the right thing.

Will FOP pay for his defense? Recently FOP has been paying for non duty allegations of rape, drug use, domestics, medical roll abuse and false arrest. I was denied an attorney 3 years ago for a bs beef and I beat the case - now a guy on my watch is being given a lawyer for free for the same allegations.

Yes, I agree that this is wrong on many levels. I would not pull over for a civilian vehicle that did not have emergency lights and if it pursued me I sure would be worried that I was about to be victimized. Get on the phone and call. But, then if the pursuing vehicle was driving off I sure would not shoot at it.

11/25/2014 07:57:00 PM

Huh?! Maybe it's just me but how about a 911 call.."Hey I'm an off duty PO and some whack job has been chasing me from Kedzie-ish to Monterey." That's plenty of time to make a call and if dude poses a threat to you before any cars catch up with you...well you got your own firearm (hopefully). But to say that most coppers would pull over and fire at an unknown person down the street and then continue to fire at him as he FLEES...I think you're being generous with your "most of us would" idea. Just maybe...just maybe he didn't call because he had just almost hit a pedestrian, an overzealous off duty tried to stop him and he was toasted. Just maybe. Would you give a non-cop a pass if he was a concealed carry guy and started firing at someone down the street for following him and he never even called 911?!?! Yeah right. The off duty guy had no business getting out of his car and walking up to this guy. He should have just called it in and stayed with him as long as he thought necessary until a uniform can take over.

First it was Morgan Park, 022nd.

Second it was a moron off-duty part time, want to be hero with a history of police impersonation that tried to do a traffic stop. Yes, he was in his personal car.

It was the CPD officer that allegedly fired his weapon after almost a 5 mile chase started by this clown from MPPD.

The rest doesn't need to be shared in this venue, that much is public.

Make smart decisions people.

Off duty MP Po noticed the flower guy at 111 and Pulaski almost get deliberately taken out by a car. Mp Po pulled along side said car at kedzie .
