Cop Cleared in Lawsuit
- A civil trial jury ruled on Tuesday that a Chicago police officer did not use unjustified force in the 2011 fatal shooting of an 18-year-old black man.
Plaintiff Wanda Edwards was seeking unspecified damages for the death of her son, Parise Mercer, in a trial that began last week against a backdrop of rising scrutiny over police conduct toward African Americans.
Officer [...], the defendant, who also is black, was trying to arrest Mercer after a July shooting outside a restaurant. Authorities said Mercer ran and pointed a gun at [the officers]. Both officers fired and Mercer was struck by one bullet in the back and died.
What did we predict not even three weeks ago? That news reports will start pointing out the race of the officers involved because of all the riots, looting, burning, etc., and here it is, not even a month later.
The usual accusations were made of planted guns, altar boys and excessive force - the jury voted 8-0 in favor of the police defendants, so evidently there are some sane people serving on civil juries and some lawyers who can field a decent case.

Choose a jury of TAXPAYERS. This should be on billboards around court houses, in newspaper, TV and radio ads.

The FOP and PB&PA ought to put together ads like this and like I remember from long ago about how tough it was to be a cop and they deserve your respect. It would be money well spent that I can't imagine Rahm doing that.

Baltimore refused to initially give the race of their officers, and then proceeded to charge practically everyone that was on the watch that day.

I am glad this officer was cleared, doesn't matter his skin color. He was BLUE, that's all that matters.

I was called for Federal Jury duty last week and was interviewed by Judge, etc for this case. Of course when they found out I was retired Police and knew most of Officers testifying they released me. In my opinion the City is to quick to settle cases, they should fight them more. With 30 yrs experience, and being involved in cases like this, I knew that if the City did not settle, and the Officer was sitting in Federal court with three attorney's provided by City, the City felt they had a good case. Nice job Officer, stay safe.

Sue and get what? I doubt if she has any money and her lawyer(s) was probably counting to get a big piece (contingency fee) of her "anticipated" ghetto lottery jackpot payout for her son's death.
