So...12 Hour Days, Eh?

Let's just take a moment to note everything we know about the upcoming debacle:
  •
Now that we got that out of the way, some observations and maybe a few questions:
  • Did everyone notice that 005 is specifically left out of the order? That's because they only have two watches, meaning they contribute nothing to the Third Watch reaction force. Yet they could draw officers if the situation calls for it. This might just be the death knell of the10-hour/2-shift program.
  • Does anyone else think this is an argument for a citywide deploy-able Unit?
  • 12.5 hours - does that translate into an extra personal? An extended lunch? We imagine the backlog is going to translate into not just hours, but multiple hours, maybe a day. Are ET jobs going to be suspended?  Detective hand-outs held over? Selling Dope calls coded without a response as Tact is otherwise occupied? We'll bet the Inspection Division is out in force at the Branch Courts - nothing like kicking Patrol while they're down.
  • District bid officers and District bid sergeants - if deployed outside their contractual boundaries, premium pay on top of holiday pay? Dean and Ade should be alerting their members now, not in a grievance next year. Reverse Seniority might apply somehow? It'll be funny as hell to sort this one out.
  • Who really thinks the Deadheads are going to do anything but eat Twinkies, munch Doritos and exchange bootleg tapes?
  • Are the HQ mice deployed?
So much entertainment for a summer weekend. Pray for rain.

No. No praying for rain. Punishing the many for the actions of the few is NOT the way to go.

Seriously, maintain the blog as the future fop president, you would win in a landslide! You have the right outlook on everything minus the whining and bitching of most coppers on here. If you don't want too, find a suitable puppet and recommend him where your running things from behind the scene. We need someone who has the working coppers priorities in mind as well as the retired.

Many years ago I worked in a small town with four full-time officers. We worked 12 hour shifts (two meal breaks), three on, three off. It was a way to have 24 hour coverage. Doubt that would translate well here but the day shift passed quickly and the three days off was pretty nice.

To answer one of your questions: you know damn well that HQ house mice and even district commander's secretaries etc. do not factor into this boondoggle.
If McNutty is on his way out he's surely going out in a memorable way.

From an Old Retired Guy;

Back in 1996 when we worked the Democratic National Convention, we worked almost 16 hour days (and we were allowed 2-30 minute lunches and at least 3-15 minute personals). It was written somewhere in the contract that 12 or more hours worked gave you the extra lunch period (probably gone now?) I was a unit rep and made sure my guys got all the correct OT that was written in the contract. They could only change your start time by 2 hours before they had to start paying time and a half or sometimes double time. The city paid out tons of money. However they were supposedly reimbursed by the DNC for all the extra OT and Shanks did not want any problems with the police. Those were some pretty large OT checks and it was almost like a third payday that month.

Just Sayin.....

There is a reason they are pushing 12 hour days on the holiday. It isn't to because they are worried about drunks and lost children.

Apparently the department is bracing itself for rioting due to the anticipated release of a police involved shooting that occurred in 008. Not sure if this is true but it would explain things. You would think they would let us know about this type of stuff.

The recent arrests are “an indication that the increased number of threads of threats … is at the highest level that most of us have seen since 9/11,” Chairman Richard Burr of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence told us in an interview.

His comments track with those of his House counterpart Devin Nunes, who said earlier this week that the country is at a higher risk of terrorism than ever before!

Be safe remember

Here is logic for you, tact can let 4 people take cu. The four getting it are on the same team, due to most senior officers, four others on that team are on furlogh so that leaves 2 po's working nights on the 3rd.All the other teams are full, but due to seniority rules and this ass a nine 15% , one team gets decimated.
Now I know a lot of people bitch about tact on here, blah, blah, blah, this is more about downtown again showing they have zero common sense.

The 12hr day has to do with keeping the homicides, shootings and Navy Pier/Downtown quite for the holiday weekend. 12 hour shifts keep more police on the street and free up 3rd watch to cover Navy Pier/Downtown and probably some foot posts in the districts. The city is afraid of double digit homicides, 30 plus shootings and vistors being beat and robbed. It's to keep the city out of the national headlines. No secret that the past few years has caused lots of headaches for the Mayor. I don't believe it will help with the homicides and shootings but might keep downtown a bit safer. I pray for our safety and let's stick together.

You're wrong. The house mice were switched to those day off groups (from DOG Saturday/Sunday) so they'd each be available to work a shitty detail on at least one weekend day. I read order E02-02-01. If I understand it correctly, the "personals" paragraph, as seen below, estates that members are entitled to one fifteen minutes personal. I understand that it would be at least cruel for a supervisor to deny one an additional personal on a 12 hour day. If the supervisor is worth his salt, he/she would take care of his/her workers, yet the order specifically states one personal. Please correct me if I am wrong.

D. Personals
1. Sworn members assigned to units which normally receive assignments by radio may be granted a personal not to exceed fifteen minutes during their tour of duty. The granting of a personal should not adversely impact the overall operations of the unit. A personal will not immediately precede nor immediately follow the designated lunch period. A personal will not normally be granted during the last hour of the tour of duty.
2. Officers will notify the police communications operator to request a personal. The police communications operator will acknowledge the requesting unit and follow the Office of Emergency Communications procedures for miscellaneous assignments. While in a personal status, the requesting unit will monitor the radio and will be available for assignment. If an assignment is received while on a personal, the receiving unit will immediately terminate such status and respond to the assignment without delay.
3. Supervisory members will monitor the members under their direct supervision to ensure that a request for a personal does not adversely impact the operations of the unit. If in the opinion of the supervisor the workload at any particular time is not conducive to the granting of a personal, the supervisor will notify the police communications operator to refuse the personal at that time.

Just do the minimum work. Answer the jobs and nothing more. If this works out for the dept kiss most of your holidays goodby. Everyone who is thinking about just the money is not looking at the long game here. This is a job, once a great job but still a job. Our family and friends are what matter and if we're forced to work long hours on holidays we will no longer be apart of those family and friend gatherings. We already give up part of those times just being the police we should not willingly give up the whole day just because the City refuses to hire the manpower to safely police this city. If we as officers would stand together stop doing VRI and just do the minimum on this 12hr weekend we could force the city to finally hire more officers. The money is nice but if we don't spend time with our family and friends we will lose so much more then money.

You, on the other hand, are currently the police. You do it every day, year after year, yet you don't get enough of it that you read and post on a police blog during your little time off?

Spend some time with YOUR kids, go fishing or anything, but leave us alone.

I know that morale in this Department is in the sewer. No matter what rank you hold, in some aspect the effects of poor moral partly caused by the lack of quality and qualified leadership in upper management and City figureheads is felt in a resounding way. I won't even get into the lack of support of the politicians, media, SOME residents and many community groups during this post.
My point here is simply that if you are in any way a decent cop, you will be a cop until you die. You have developed skills that are not taught, yet they are learned. They are learned through life experience and repetition. You have developed some skills and you have developed a "sixth sense" that many do not have, do not get and do not develop. Some of it is survival, but most of it is the inner you ("in your head"), inherently wanting to do what's right, wanting to do good, wanting to help and wanting to both succeed, and in a small way, wanting that inner feeling of a the adrenalin rush and feeling of pride and success. That's why we do what we do, all rolled into a nutshell. If you are in any way a decent cop you will never be able to get it out of your head. You may choose to act differently, you may have to based on age, medical condition, etc., or based on the situation, but you will be aware. You will be alert, you will be attentive to your surrounding and will see things others don't. You will feel something isn't right and you will plan an action or reaction.
My point is that no matter how much you hate your job, hate your bosses and dislike everyone else who you feel doesn't think exactly as you do, act as you do, or how you think they should, bosses who don't allow you to do what you want when you want, and the policies and protocols that you don't agree with or want to tolerate but have to in order to keep your job, you will always have this job in your head. If you hate that idea, work on accepting it now, or you will eventually hate yourself because you cannot get it out of your head. You will be angry and resentful; more than you are now, but most of it will be self-initiated and directed inward at yourself. Don't dreads it, embrace it. It is a plethora of skills, intuition and resolve that may save your life and may continue to protect your family and friends. After all, do you really want to become part of the heard of sheep you resent and complain about every day? P.S. Busting on the guys who have embraced it and who hold fond memories of a better time is pretty petty and childish. That hate is eating you; work on it.

this reminds me of the great fiasco of the million man march, years back....had coppers deployed all over the place.......and nothing! nothing out of the ordinary happen. maybe there's some creditable threats that they have refuse to share with the general public and the boots on the ground coppers.

"Are the HQ mice deployed?"

We have taken up a collection in a plastic "donation" cup, and have gathered 17 rounds of .380 and .38 S&W of various types and ages for them so far. The crusty green ones are the best, take our word.
