CPS CompStat

  • Chicago Public Schools acknowledged Thursday that its graduation rate – heralded by Mayor Rahm Emanuel during his re-election campaign because the number of students finishing high school was reportedly rising – was overstated.

The school system was forced to make the embarrassing revision following a Better Government Association/WBEZ investigation earlier this year that found thousands of students were being counted as transfers when they should have been counted as dropouts. Transfers aren’t factored into the graduation rate, but dropouts are.

CPS previously claimed that 69.4 percent of students who started high school in 2009 graduated by the summer of 2014. But on Thursday, officials revealed that the rate is, in fact, 66.3 percent.
It must be the Revenge of Chuy. All of Rahm's lies are coming to the fore.

The same pattern of false figures can be seen at the Shitty Colleges of Chicago where every student with a pulse and a student loan is being pushed through to graduation or completion of a certificate program even though they cannot read or write.

Everyone knows that the folks running the public school system cannot add 2 + 2 and come up with 4, three times in a row.

I don't know how many times it needs to be said: you can't trust that slimy bastard Rahm.
Besides being a professional asshole he's a world class liar.

Eh, 69.4%, 66.3%. To-may-to, To-mah-to.

Whatever the actual percentage, the most interesting thing that "officials revealed" is that 2/3's of these stupid bastards needed 5 YEARS to graduate high school.

Just think if they ever allowed the real statistics on violent incidents per school. Everything is kept hush hush. No one is suspended and the inmates run the asylum. They say the kids are just having a bad day.

If a student leaves CPS and goes directly to IDOC, is that considered dropping out or a transfer?

Rahm's lies? I am not sure about that. The inflated numbers were coming from the school system which wants to look like they are doing a great job. The mayor does not do the calculating himself, but depends on the officials of the school system. And, in the case of the Chicago Public School system, being a graduate is something you must take with a grain of salt. When you can't read or write and know little of history or geography or science, what good does a diploma do you? I taught at the community college level and then at the University level( Chicago State), and I know what I am talking about.

Even 69.4% is a pathetic graduation rate for CPS. I think Haiti has a better high school graduation rate.

All of the data presented by CPS is bullshit: graduation rate, freshman on track rate, discipline incidents. The only number the district can't manipulate is ACT scores. That average remains around 16 for the district as a whole. And idiots will blame teachers for that, as if we can take freshman reading at a 4th grade level and get them a 25 on the ACT by the time they're juniors.

No. You don't. The inflated numbers come from CHICAGO public school system. Do you really think the mayor's office has no sway there? Lol

Okay people, if the CPS is manipulating the numbers to make it look better. What do you think CPD is doing with the numbers?

WAKE UP! 30 Years driving a car in CPD and I am telling you they are manipulating the CPD numbers.

The only people that believe this crap number are the ones promoting it.
Ask any City employee why they send their own kid to a private school??????

Damn, I didn't notice that when I first read the thread last night. Then today I did the math. Sure as shit, The timeframe stated would put them in a fifth year of high school. With the exception of the handful of selective enrollment / classical CPS schools where kids actually perform and exceed way past normal levels, the rest should be shuttered. Talk about a waste of time and effort. 95% of CPS schools are nothing more than day care centers and a source of free meals anyway. Time to treat this as an investment and focus your resources on kids that actually want to learn and have the smarts, upbringing and familial support to meet this objective. CPS is a failure for the most part. Time to restructure it from top to bottom.

CPS hmm? old arne duncan resigned from Washington post to come back to Chicago! Would it be that he is coming back to screw CPS up like he did when he was here before? CPS is totally mismanaged, so much money millions possibly billions flushed for a mediocre at best system! You graduate maybe what 62% graduation rate? Pathetic waste of tax dollars! If taxpayers want to gripe about tax bills look at your bills, how what 3/4% goes to Chicago public schools! Huge waste of money!

Having been at CTC( Chicago Teachers College) in the '60s I could see the demise of what our CPS schools were facing. I transferred out when I saved up money to enroll at DePaul, with big loans. That being said,I was embarrassed with the incompetence of the majority of the students that could not even speak properly in an English class! If all you demand is maybe a 13 on your ACT score then you deserve the Teachers and hierarchy you settled for. I thought Chicago was better than that, but I was obviously mistaken.
Glad to see that the CPD has Tried to uphold some level of competence in the Dept.

The adjustment doesn't seem that large, a couple of percent. The trend was still up. Not that I believe it, but this seems like no big deal. Plus, when has the government released any honest stats. Obongo claims the unemployment rate is only 5.1% yet 94 million working aged Americans are jobless.

A bit off topic. East St. Louis teachers are on strike or locked out. But busing will continue so kids can get their free breakfast and will be sent home with a lunch. WTF!

Speaking of twisted and trumped up numbers:

Was anyone aware there are several teachers receiving teacher salaries, step increases, and benefits to work as substitute teachers, even after many were displaced after the last teacher strike 3 yrs ago.? Some of these former teachers supposedly can work the rest of their careers under this agreement.

And, CPS needs to trim the fat is network administrators, some former principals and APs who work in positions like Innovation and Incubation which are nothing more than 'pencil pushing' jobs where there are several meetings between themselves and no interaction with teachers and students. .

Another area where CPS needs to take a hard look is having 3 APs at school with only 1400 students when only 2-3 yrs ago these school had two APs. That's another administrator salary of $110K+ and another $30K in benefits, which is almost two SPED teaching positions or multiple aide positions.

Also, CPS needs to look at buildings where multiple schools are housed with multiple '$120K+ salaried' administrators and '$50K+ salaried' support staff for each school.

The mayor might have some sway but only when the people who head CPS want his approval. I doubt that the mayor would risk so much to be caught actually telling someone to fudge the numbers.CPS gets federal money based on attendance and graduation numbers and test scores.

CPS has a higher graduation rate then 12 states, among them New York, Wyoming, Minnesota, Maine, and Florida. based on graduation rates for disadvantaged children. Now, what the school require to graduate from their system is the real question to ask as the national average for H.S. Graduation rate is 80% and some states have suspiciously and quickly raised their graduation rates.
